In one of the most iconic championship deciders of all-time, played on the day that World War II broke out, the climax of which was played in a ferocious thunder storm. While a draw looked likely as the hour drew to a close Paddy Phelan sent a seventy-yard free in towards the Cork goalmouth.
Fans attempted to disrupt the match, but extra police managed to keep control. Some seats were removed, and one of these was thrown and hit a match steward in the head. Luton goalkeeper Les Sealey, who had to stand in front of the Millwall fans during the second half, received a missile to the head, and a knife was also found in the goalmouth after the game. Following the final whistle, and a 1–0 victory for Luton, the visiting fans invaded the pitch.
There were several chances in the last 20 minutes and CSKA should have gone 2-0 up when Gregory Nelson was played through, but he missed his chance. It nearly proved costly as Karadzhov spilled a shot soon after, but Radoslav Dimitrov missed in the goalmouth scramble as CSKA lifted the cup for the first time since they beat Cherno More Varna 3-1 in the 2006 final. Slavia ended the game with 10 men after Brazilian defender Josias Basso was sent off in the closing stages.
They were pegged back after 73 minutes when Dutch referee Leo van der Kroft awarded what Lazio felt was a soft penalty after Clive Woods had been tripped. Colin Viljoen calmly converted the spot kick. Whymark went to congratulate him and was chased back into his own goalmouth by enraged Lazio players. Giorgio Chinaglia, the Lazio captain and super star, scored a penalty in the 82nd minute to set up a tense finish although the Italians had to score two more because of the away-goal rule.
Kelly made 34 appearances as Arsenal won the Double; he came on as a substitute in the FA Cup final against Liverpool, and scored the Gunners' equaliser in extra time in a goalmouth scramble. George Graham made a claim for the goal, but the replays show Kelly was the last Arsenal player to touch the ball. Kelly was thus the first substitute to score in an FA Cup final.Firsts, Lasts & Onlys - Paul Donnelley (Bounty Books, 2012) Charlie George scored soon after to win the match 2–1.
Swindon dominated extra time, with the heavy pitch and illnesses tiring the opposition. A header from Smart rebounded off the post after beating the Arsenal goalkeeper. From the resulting corner, Don Rogers became a Swindon hero just before the first period of extra time was over; Arsenal failed to clear the corner and in the resulting goalmouth melée Rogers coolly controlled the loose ball and fired it from close range into the net. Arsenal responded by changing to all-out attack during the second period.
In Galway's final training session, Skehill dislocated his shoulder and was a doubt for the replay. Medics gave him a "20-80" chance of playing, however, Skehill was named on the starting team and lined out in goal on 30 September 2012. The injury affected his puck-outs, which were much shorter, while he also kicked a ball away from his own goalmouth instead of stooping to lift it. Skehill later admitted that even with a heavy dose of painkillers every puck-out "was like getting stabbed".
A hectic melee in the Kilkenny goalmouth occurred with the game entering the dying minutes. Joe Kelly, a young clerical student, was at hand to dispatch the ball into the Kilkenny net to give Cork a one-point lead for the first time. A long clearance immediately after that score found Jim Langton who was fouled about 30 yards out from the Cork goal. Leahy stepped up to take the resultant free as Croke Park descended from a state of frenzy to one of silence.
"Queen of the South 0 - 2 Ross County" www.qosfc.com 11 April 2011 Queens only exerted pressure in the five-minute period leading up to County's second goal when they forced goalmouth scrambles. However a swift County counterattack led to a ball from the right wing, with Iain Vigurs scoring from close range in 39 minutes to make it 2-0. County were deserved winners without having to exert themselves against a Queens side who were easily second best in all departments and short of ideas other than aiming long balls at Derek Holmes.

In one of the most iconic championship deciders of all-time, played on the day that World War II broke out, the climax of which was played in a ferocious thunder storm. Ryng roomed with Jack Lynch, a future Taoiseach, and in the early hours of Sunday they were woken with a terrible racket and they thought Dublin was being bombed. It was thunder and lightning. While a draw looked likely as the hour drew to a close Paddy Phelan sent a seventy-yard free in towards the Cork goalmouth.
While a draw looked likely as the hour drew to a close Paddy Phelan sent a seventy- yard free in towards the Cork goalmouth. The sliotar was gobbled up by the defence and cleared, but only as far as Jimmy Kelly who sent it straight over the bar for a one-point lead. Immediately after the puck-out the referee blew the whistle and Cork were defeated on a score line of 2-7 to 3-3. Although defeated in the All-Ireland decider, Cork continued their breakthrough in 1940.
Wicklow worked hard after the resumption, however, they never got closer than four points. London pounced for their third goal in the 49th minute when Maher’s nonchalant finish deceived Joe Murphy in the goalmouth. O’Neill and Wayne O'Gorman pointed almost immediately to reduce the margin to five once again but Tommy Williams made two outstanding saves, one from O’Neill’s well-struck penalty that bounced up off the turf. Maher bagged his hat-trick in the fourth minute of injury time after a classy interchange between Finn and Kevin Walsh.
While a draw looked likely as the hour drew to a close Paddy Phelan sent a seventy-yard free in towards the Cork goalmouth. The sliotar was gobbled up by the defence and cleared, but only as far as Jimmy Kelly who sent it straight over the bar for a one-point lead. Immediately after the puck-out the referee blew the whistle and Cork were defeated on a score line of 2-7 to 3-3. Dineen left the senior hurling panel after Cork's exit from the championship in 1940.
In the 31st minute, during a mob scene in the goalmouth, McLean got a heel on the ball that barely crossed the line. It was seen by the assistant referee, who signaled the goal, giving the Cougars their first lead of the season. In the 48-49th minute, things got a bit chippy, and three yellow cards were issued in a 59-second span. In the 83rd minute, Jambga passed to Solawa, who passed to Tejada, who fired a crossing pass to McLean, who settled it and scored his second goal of the game.
The ground had a capacity of 40,000. Celtic Park, Ibrox and Hampden Park all competed with each other to host Scottish Cup Finals and Scotland matches, one of which could generate up to £1,000 in revenue for the host club. To aid their chances of gaining that revenue, Rangers constructed a large terracing, holding 36,000 people, behind the western goalmouth. The terracing, designed by Archibald Leitch, was formed by wooden planks bolted onto a framework made of iron. A similar wooden terracing was constructed at the eastern end, giving a total capacity of 75,000.
Defending against a penalty kick is one of the most difficult tasks a goalkeeper can face. Some decide which way they will dive beforehand, giving themselves time to reach the side of the goalmouth. A 2011 study published in the journal Psychological Science found goalkeepers dived to the right 71% of the time when their team was losing, but only 48% when ahead and 49% when tied, a phenomenon believed to be related to certain right-preferring behaviour in social mammals. Others try to read the kicker's motion pattern.
In December 1992, part of the floodlights failed with just six minutes left in City's home FA Cup game against Swansea City. The Grecians were losing 2–1 at the time, and when the referee tried to restart the match with only half of the floodlights working, City fans invaded the pitch and sat in the goalmouth. Once they were removed, the match restarted once more, only for the floodlights to fail one minute later; after which the match was abandoned. City lost the rescheduled match 5–2.
Mullins opened the scoring in the 34th minute, getting a foot on a cross across the goalmouth from Kemp, which followed a nifty back heel from Nyarko that created Kemp's chance. Two goals in quick succession put the game out of reach early in the second half. Sam got a header on a cross by Kemp, who had his second assist of the match. That was followed by Mullins' second goal, when the striker collected a pass from Nyarko, slipped wide of a defender, and cut the ball back just inside the far post.
It was crossed in by Dick Duckworth, but the ball passed in front of an open goalmouth before being cleared. After 23 minutes Meredith crossed for Turnbull who headed the ball past Shaw to put Manchester United a goal up. Moments later, Picken took the ball into the QPR box and Shaw ran out to collect; but slipped, allowing Turnbull score another goal. Following a brief QPR counterattack, Bannister for Manchester drove in a powerful shot but Shaw punched the ball onto the underside of the crossbar and clear.
The second leg in Oriel Park saw Dundalk dominate again as expected, with the Galway goalmouth being described as "resembling a very crowded Eyre Square". Goalkeeper Lally, recovered from his injury the week before, had to make a number of saves to keep Dundalk out. His opposite number, Richie Blackmore, meanwhile, had little to do – as Galway's players were forced into defending on the edge of their own penalty area. In extra-time Dundalk continued to dominate possession, but could only fashion one chance, which again was saved by Lally.
The cup final was played at Kennington Oval on 23 March 1878, against the Wanderers, who had won the cup in the two previous seasons, with Morris selected at full-back. The Wanderers took an early lead through Jarvis Kenrick, before the Engineers gradually came back into the match. In the 20th minute, the ball went out of play close to the Wanderers' goal-line. Morris took the ensuing throw-in, delivering the ball into the goalmouth, from where it was bundled across the line for an equalising goal.
Most agreed that a draw was now likely and, given the conditions that the game was played in, a draw would have been appropriate. With time running out Jack Lynch missed a number of points before Paddy Phelan sent a 70-yard free in towards the Cork goalmouth. The sliothar was gobbled up by the defence and cleared, but only as far as Jimmy Kelly who sent it straight over the bar for a one-point lead. Many newspapers credited Terry Leahy with scoring the point, however, Kelly was the hero of the day.
He returned to Rovers the next season, helping them to the Double, as "give it to Bob" became a Dublin catchphrase. In the 1926 Cup final, he famously pulled out of a goalmouth challenge, sacrificing a goal (and the Cup) to prevent injuring the Fordsons goalkeeper. Fullam made his debut for the Irish Free State against Italy in Turin in 1926; he scored in the return match against Italy in 1927. As he was now 30, and the selectors had a preference for young players, this second cap was his last.
Immediately after the puck-out the play switched to the Cork goalmouth, however, a Frank Cummins shot went wide. Back at the other end of the field after the puck-out team captain Charlie McCarthy did likewise for Cork when his first shot of the day went wide. Soon after this the ball broke to Ray Cummins down on the wing on the Hogan Stand side and he was completely unmarked. His shot was not a good one and was pulled down by Kilkenny goalkeeper Noel Skehan and was promptly cleared.
With this series, Toe Blake had coached the Canadiens to seven Cups in eleven years. Henri Richard, a member of all seven championship teams, would score the series winner in game six in overtime. Two minutes into the extra period, Richard broke in on Red Wing goalie Roger Crozier, lost his footing on the newly resurfaced ice as he cut across the goalmouth, and sprawled into Crozier. The puck went in, and even though Crozier and the Wings protested that Richard had pushed the puck in with his hand, the goal stood.
Two first half goals gave Kilkenny the initiative which they never lost in the final. In the 17th minute Angela Downey's high cross from the left was touched on by Carmel Savage to Jo Dunne who availed of a defensive mistake to score. Angela came racing back to point and then sent a close free through the crowded goalmouth to the net to put Kilkenny two goals clear. Pádraig Puirséil wrote in the Irish Press: > Angela Downey was the outstanding player on the field, but she got plenty of > help from the other forwards Carmel Savage, Jo Dunne and Mary Purcell.
Ian Richardson was booked within a minute of the second half starting for bringing down Kiwomya. Notts County started to come back into the match; Martindale headed wide, Agana and Richardson both had shots blocked during a goalmouth scramble and Tony Battersby had a shot saved over the crossbar by Jonathan Gould, as County tried to equalise during a 20-minute spell of pressure. Between County's chances, Stallard had the opportunity to double City's lead when he capitalised on a slip from Strodder, but Ward saved his effort. However, City went on to double their advantage on 75 minutes.
Being superstitious, he was unable to watch penalty kicks being taken at the far end of the pitch and would kneel in the goalmouth with his back to the action. When his team scored a goal, he would often celebrate with a handstand in his penalty area. Legend has it that during his time at Swansea: > Warming up before the game, he suddenly chased off the field only to return > carrying a chair. He'd spotted an elderly supporter on crutches in the crowd > and ushered him into the disabled supporters' enclosure and sat him down to > watch the game.
On 31 January 2008, Eustace joined Watford from Stoke City for a fee of £250,000. On 20 September 2008, Eustace "scored" a bizarre opening own goal in the game between Watford and Reading, where a goalmouth scramble saw the ball go nowhere near the goal line, despite the linesman flagging for a goal to the bemusement of everyone in the ground. A corner from Stephen Hunt bounced off of Eustace and was hooked back by Noel Hunt. What could have been a debatable corner for Reading, initially given as a goal kick, was actually then given as a goal.
A panoramic view of the Crystal Palace ground during the 1905 FA Cup Final. The final was played on 21 April 1900 at Crystal Palace in front of a crowd of 68,945, many of whom were "rooting" for the southerners; the referee was Arthur Kingscott from Derby, who had refereed the Second Round match against Newcastle United. The weather was unusually sunny for April and Bury, who won the toss, decided to kick off with the sun behind them. From the start, the Bury forwards directed several high crosses into the goalmouth to test the Saints' goalkeeper, Jack Robinson.
Ahmed Elmohamady received a free kick and crossed it in to the penalty area. This caused controversy as Arsenal believed he had taken the free kick several yards in front of where the foul was committed. Nevertheless, the ball was picked up on the far edge of the penalty area by Quinn, who got past Aaron Ramsey and crossed it in to the goalmouth, where it was headed towards goal by centre-back Alex Bruce. Arsenal goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański parried it out to Hull captain and fellow centre-back Curtis Davies, who fired the ball into the far bottom corner of the goal.
But, Neagle scored on a header three minutes later to level the score, when a goalmouth scramble forced a saved by the Toronto goalie that found its way to Neagle in front of the goal. Neagle made it two in the second half when he got on the end of a Sam pass and touched it beyond the keeper's reach. Pending the next day's Montreal Impact match, the win catapulted D.C. at least temporarily into 4th place in the Eastern Conference. The Toronto match was followed by a break for international games, and both Birnbaum and Hamid were called into the national team.
Carr doubled Sunderland's lead with an own goal when an attempted headed clearance looped over Foster. Alex McLeish brought on new signing Nikola Žigić, who "injected a note of panic hitherto undetected" in the home team's defence as Sebastian Larsson's crosses produced goals from Scott Dann and a late equaliser from Liam Ridgewell after a goalmouth scramble. Žigić marked his first start, at home to Blackburn Rovers, by pulling Christopher Samba's shirt to concede a penalty. After Foster saved Morten Gamst Pedersen's spot-kickone of many saves in a man-of-the-match performanceBlackburn took the lead.
After the break, the Saints continued with their high-pressure style of attacking, and finally in the 69th minute they made their pressure count, with José Fonte making his touch count in a goalmouth scramble to score his third of the season and his side's first of the game. Substitute Guly do Prado also got involved in a couple of late chances on goal, but both sides fought it out to the end and it ended 1–0 to Southampton. The win saw Southampton rise to 8th in the table, moving from 9th position for the first time since December.
With first choice goalkeeper Volkan Demirel suspended, Rüştü started the UEFA Euro 2008 quarter-final match against Croatia. A questionable foray from his goalmouth allowed Croatia to score the match's first goal with a minute remaining in extra time. Rüştü immediately made amends for his mistake though, assisting on Semih Şentürk's injury time goal in the 122nd minute. In the ensuing penalty shootout, he faced four kicks, saving the last one from Mladen Petrić to secure Turkey's victory in the shootout and enabling Turkey to progress to the Euro semi-finals for the first time ever.
With Montreal pressing in the dying seconds of the game, Kennedy dug the puck out of a desperate scramble in front of the Toronto goalmouth, carried the puck up ice, then forcing goaltender Durnan to go down, he put the puck behind him to clinch the game. Toronto won game 4 in overtime 2–1 while the Canadiens won game 5 in Montreal 3–1. Kennedy's line came up with their best game of the series in game 6. Montreal had taken an early two-goal lead and appeared to be heading for a seventh game in Montreal.
Led by 2002 captain Hong Myung-Bo, South Korea entered their eighth consecutive World Cup finals with expectations following the 2010 qualification and a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Tournament. In their opening match against Russia, Lee Keun-ho scored after an error by goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev, only for Aleksandr Kerzhakov to equalise following a goalmouth scramble. The high-scoring match that followed saw Algeria beat the Koreans 4-2. Korea outshot a 10-man Belgium side in the final game of group stage, but wound up defeated by a late goal by Jan Vertonghen.
Newton, a defensive player was placed in an excellent attacking position with few opponents to check his progress. Newton advanced on a short dribble, before producing a low, outstanding diagonal cross that found Mullery, who had sprinted into the goalmouth. Mullery finished what he had started, by driving the ball home past the German goalkeeper Sepp Maier. Tactically, this goal combines the power of the long pass with that of the two-man combination, and indeed, before his pass to Newton, Mullery had exchanged passes with Francis Lee before setting off on his final combination run.
TJ Reid leveled the scores straight after the interval but Tipperary responded with 2–1 in four minutes as Eoin Kelly's free was added to by goals from Lar Corbett and Noel McGrath. Corbett lashed his second goal to the roof of the net after being set up by a pass on the run from Noel McGrath. McGrath's instinct to follow up a long ball into the Kilkenny goalmouth proved inspired as he scrambled the ball to the net from close range for his goal. Kilkenny then hit four unanswered points to leave one point between the sides with 16 minutes left.
He had only one thing in mind as he headed straight for the goalmouth. He fired in a shot that full-back Jim ‘Link’ Walsh deflected past his goalkeeper Ollie Walsh. The final whistle blew immediately and the score line read Waterford 1-17, Kilkenny 5-5. Four weeks later on 4 October 77,285 returned to Croke Park to see the second installment of the All-Ireland final between Waterford and Kilkenny. The second game began terribly for Waterford, in spite of playing with a strong wind, and they trailed by 1-4 to 0-1 after only twelve minutes of play.
In one of the most iconic championship deciders of all-time, played on the day that World War II broke out, the climax of the game was played in a ferocious thunder storm. While a draw looked likely as the hour drew to a close, Paddy Phelan sent a seventy-yard free in towards the Cork goalmouth. The sliotar was gobbled up by the defence and cleared, but only as far as Jimmy Kelly who sent it straight over the bar for a one-point lead. Immediately after the puck-out the referee blew the whistle and Kilkenny were victorious on a score line of 2–7 to 3–3.
Shanahan made his inter-county debut with the Tipperary minor hurling team in 1946. In the Munster final against Cork he collected a mis-hit seventy-yard free near the end of the game to score the winning goal and win the match by just a single point. Galway were well-beaten in the All- Ireland semi-final but the final was lost to Dublin in the infamous Billy O'Brien goalmouth incident. In the last few minutes the Dublin forwards succeeded in getting the ball over the goal line for a goal, which was only awarded after a three-minute consultation between the referee M. J. Flaherty and the umpires.
Although defeated in the All-Ireland decider, Cork continued their breakthrough in 1940. An 8-9 to 6-4 defeat of Tipperary in the decider gave O'Sullivan his first National Hurling League medal.
Seemingly out of nowhere, Garcia dove back into the goalmouth and got enough of his head on the ball to deflect the shot up and off of the crossbar to keep it out of the net. The close calls did not end there for the Hoosiers, as a Santa Clara attacker found himself wide open about 10 yards in front of the Indiana goal following a corner kick in the 73rd minute. But luckily for Indiana, the attacker sent his attempt wide of the net. From that moment on, Indiana clamped down defensively and closed out the 1-0 win for the 1999 National Championship.
On 26 March 2015, Johnstone joined League Two leaders Burton Albion on loan until the end of the season. He made his Burton debut on 3 April 2015, playing the first hour of a 1–1 draw away to Plymouth Argyle. In his third appearance, after Carlisle United took an early lead, he needed lengthy treatment following a clash of heads but was able to return to the field of play, only to then score an equaliser in the eighth minute of stoppage time after a goalmouth scramble. Johnstone was an unused substitute in Burton's last match of the season, which confirmed the club as League Two championship winners.
A Dundee defender tackled Gallacher as he neared the goalmouth, Gallacher stumbled but managed to somersault with the ball gripped between his feet, over the goal- line and into the back of the net. Willie Maley commented afterwards that Gallacher's goal was "one of these incidents that had to be seen to be appreciated." Celtic went on to score another goal and won 2–1. Jimmy McGrory (right) in action for Celtic during the 1930s. He is the record goal-scorer in British football, with a career total of 550 goals The mid-1920s saw the emergence of Jimmy McGrory as one of the most prolific goalscorers in Scottish football history.
At 3:15pm GAA President Paddy McNamee threw in the sliothar the game was on. Even with the benefit of the wind at their backs the Cork men, who were playing at Croke Park for the first time in eight years, began slowly. Within three minutes the Munster champions were 1-1 to 0-0 in arrears as Jimmy Phelan found the net for the first time in the game with an early assault on the Cork goalmouth. Cork captain Jack Lynch opened the scoring for his team, however, ‘the Rebels’ struggled until half-time when they trailed by 2-4 to 1-1.
Hodgetts' long cross- pass found Charlie Athersmith on the right, and his centre fell to Bob Chatt who sent the ball goalwards on a half volley. Albion's keeper Joe Reader was only able to get his fingers to the shot, and turned the ball across the goal mouth and, after a goalmouth scramble involving Devey and Albion defender Jack Horton, the ball was turned in to the net. There are no accurate timings for the goal and different reports time it at between 30 and 39 seconds. At the time, many of the crowd and press missed the goal as they were still taking their seats, and the press reports indicated that Chatt had scored.
The Athletic News correspondent highlighted how "the newcomer played with great judgment, and he rarely gave Smith a poor pass, while the way he hooked the ball into the goalmouth was a lesson to some his colleagues." He played twice more before being granted a free transfer and returning to Lancashire with Third Division North club Rochdale. For the first time in his Football League career, Roseboom was a regular first-team selection. He scored in a 3–2 win against Wigan Borough in the second match of the season and produced winning goals against Chesterfield in October and in the last minute of the match against Tranmere Rovers two weeks later.
In 1924 Galway defeated Tipp by a single point to set up an All-Ireland final meeting with Dublin. Mick Gill, who had played with the Galway team for the previous championship, was now a key member of the Dublin team. Galway took an early lead but ‘the Dubs’ got back on level terms when Garrett Howard drove the ball and the Galway goalkeeper into the net. Dublin also copied Galway's tactic of dropping the sliothar into the goalmouth, thus securing a 5-3 to 2-6 victory. In 1925 Galway trounced Kilkenny by 9-4 to 6-0 in the All-Ireland semi-final to set up a championship decider with Tipperary.
The subsequent All-Ireland final pitted Cork against Kilkenny. In one of the most iconic championship deciders of all-time, played on the day that World War II broke out, the climax of which was played in a ferocious thunder storm. While a draw looked likely as the hour drew to a close Paddy Phelan sent a seventy-yard free in towards the Cork goalmouth. Two covered terraces were erected behind each goal, either side of the goalmouth, whilst an artificial pitch was installed.
The match was believed to be important as after some seven games without a win, should Manchester United lose this game Ferguson would be sacked soon after, this being his last chance to get a win. During the second half of the match Mark Robins scored for Manchester United, but with only three minutes of the match remaining Nottingham Forest felt they had equalized when following a goalmouth scramble the ball found its way into the Manchester United goal. The referee immediately gave the goal until Harris flagged for an infringement against Nottingham Forest and the goal was disallowed, Television replays after the match were unable to discover the reason for his decision and what he could have seen from his position on the line.
Without Robinson, suspended for two matches after receiving his tenth yellow card, Hancox, who injured an ankle shortly before the game, and Žigić, dropped, Bartley returned from injury and Birmingham gave a debut to 19-year-old left back Amari'i Bell and first league starts of the season to Will Packwood and loanee Albert Rusnák for the visit of Leicester City. Paul Caddis took over the captaincy. In the first half, Birmingham were "relentlessly battered" by the league leaders, though conceded only once, and after Løvenkrands replaced Lee at half time, they "played with more verve and imagination". After they failed to force the ball home in a goalmouth scramble, Leicester broke at pace and Jamie Vardy increased the lead.
South Africa delivered a stunning first half performance, playing at a high tempo to negate the Malians' superior physical presence. Unable to keep up with the pace of the game, Mali were overwhelmed as South Africa carved out chance after chance, finally making the breakthrough in the 31st minute as Thuso Phala drove into the box and fired a low cross across the goalmouth which an open Tokelo Rantie pounced on. South Africa headed into the break 1–0 up. However, in the second half, led by veteran midfielder and captain Seydou Keita, the Malians began to impose themselves and equalised in the 58th minute amid a momentary defensive collapse as the South African defense allowed captain Keita to head home an unchallenged cross.
The second half was, however, Chievo's, the majority of the action coming in Antonio Mirante's goalmouth, although chances were still at a premium. Chievo made their improved performance count through ex-Parma frontman Alberto Paloschi with 12 minutes to go and a draw looked the fair result, but a late Giovinco finish from substitute Jonathan Biabiany's inch-perfect whipped cross saw Parma snatch all three points and Giovinco become the first player since Adriano in 2003–04 to score 3 goals in the first two matches. Two-goal Giovinco was then sent off in injury time after he was shown a second yellow card for kicking the ball into the net following the referee's decision to penalise the diminutive Italian.
On 23 January 2017, Deulofeu joined A.C. Milan on loan until the end of the 2016–17 season. Two days later, he made his debut with Milan in a Coppa Italia quarter-final match against Juventus, coming on as a substitute for Carlos Bacca in the 1–2 defeat. On 29 January, he made his league debut as a substitute for the injured Giacomo Bonaventura in a loss by the same score against Udinese. On 8 February, Deulofeu made his first assist, a low pass across the goalmouth towards Mario Pašalić, in a 0–1 away victory against Bologna, and 11 days later he scored his first goal for the Rossoneri in a 2–1 victory against Fiorentina at the San Siro.
In one of the toughest games of his career, Reddin came in for some unwanted treatment from some Cork supporters behind his goal. After a ten-minute stoppage to clear some of the 55,000 crowd who had invaded the field, Reddin's goalmouth area quickly became surrounded. Bottles, cans, sods and even an overcoat were thrown at him while he was also barracked and pushed during the closing stages. Tipperary eventually won the game by 2–17 to 3–11, however, in spite of collecting a second Munster medal, it took several hours before Reddin could leave the field due to an angry Cork crowd. He later lined out in his second successive All-Ireland final on 3 September 1950, with age-old rivals Kilkenny providing the opposition.
He slipped past Paddy Christie on 13 minutes to score his first goal and when the Dublin defender slipped to the turf in the 22nd minute, Crowley once again fired the ball past David Byrne. In nine minutes Dublin went from being level to conceding 2-4 while managing just a point themselves. Kerry were reduced to fourteen men when Tomás Ó Sé was handed a straight red card for a foul on Collie Moran as the Dublin player bore down on goal. The Dubs had two opportunities to rescue a draw, the first of which occurred in the 69th minute when corner back Coman Goggins raced towards goal but Kerry goalkeeper Declan O'Keeffe managed to save and the ball was cleared after a goalmouth scramble.
The opening fifteen minutes of the game were error strewn and Leicester could easily have found themselves three goals in front as United's clearly nervous goalkeeper, David Gaskell, presented them with three opportunities to fire into an unguarded net. On each occasion, Keyworth, Stringfellow and Gibson in turn were unable to finish the moves off with a last-ditch United challenge keeping the scoreline blank. Having survived the third scare in the fifteenth minute, United took a stranglehold on the match which they never relinquished, peppering Gordon Banks goalmouth with several shots off target before finally taking a deserved lead after half an hour. A Bobby Charlton shot had been saved comfortably by Banks, who then bowled the ball out to Gibson.
What could have been another Cork score quickly turned into a Kilkenny attack. As the sliothar was sent into the Cork goalmouth two of the team’s defenders collided as it dropped to Liam ‘Chunky’ O’Brien. O’Brien flicked it onto Kevin Fennelly who had an easy tap into the net to capture Kilkenny’s first score of the afternoon. Almost immediately Brian Cody had the opportunity to his side three points up, however, his shot went wide. Cork’s ultra accurate free-taker, John Horgan, did likewise for his team soon afterwards when his long-range free tailed wide. After another intensive tussle around midfield the ball broke to Ray Cummins once again and he took off on a solo run in the direction of Kilkenny’s goal.
The second half offered more of the same, in spite of Paudie Nevin finding the net for De La Salle after a period of ping pong in the Portumna goalmouth. Tipperary native, Micheál Ryan, Andy Smith, David Canning and Kevin Hayes also found the range for Portumna, as the game resembled a training session close to the finish. John Mullane tried hard for De La Salle, but never got a chance to run at the opposing defence, and his point near the end, received a ripple of applause from the De La Salle faithful in the crowd. Portumna's victory margin was well merited with eleven of their players getting on the scoresheet Portumna's victory secured their third All-Ireland title in four years.
Dublin needed twenty minutes of extra time to beat Tipperary in the semi-final after what Agnes Hourigan described in the Irish Press as "one of the hardest, fastest and most exciting camogie matches ever played". Tipperary led 1-1 to nil at half time through a goal from Brid Scully, the score was 2–1 each at full time, Kathleen Mills shot a spectacular long range goal from a free in the first minute of extra time and Dublin never subsequently lost the lead, although Tipperary cut the lead back to a point. Galway shocked Antrim in the All Ireland semi-final at Casement Park with a bizarre match-winning goal. Antrim, led until three minutes from the end, when Chris Conway dropped a high lobbing ball into the Antrim goalmouth.
He never played for the Arsenal first team again, and was given a free transfer in March 1964. He joined Southend United two months later and made 62 appearances, before joining Hull City in August 1966 where he racked up 255 league appearances until the end of the 1973–74 season. During his stay at Hull the home fans would throw oranges onto the goalmouth as a gesture to the fact that he had been spotted eating an orange after training, many included contact telephone numbers and various messages of good luck. On one occasion a Tigers fan was arrested at Sheffield United's ground for throwing an orange to McKechnie; the Sheffield police were not aware of the ritual and McKechnie had to write to the court in defence of the arrested fan.
A week later, on 6 April 2019, Oikonomou equalizing the score as he prodded home after the ball fell kindly to him in a goalmouth scramble after Petros Mantalos had a shot blocked in a final 3–1 away win game against Xanthi, a result which means the team have all but locked up third place in the SuperLeague. On 25 April 2019, Oikonomou scored from point blank range was ruled out for offside, but the decision was overturned after it was determined that the ball had been flicked on by a Lamia player, in a hammering 4–0 Greek Cup away semifinal second-leg game against Lamia and for the third consecutive season, AEK will meet PAOK in the Greek Cup final. On 22 January 2020, he opened the score with a header in a 3–1 away win against Volos.
Swan fouled Taylor on 60 minutes and his subsequent dismissal proved to be the turning point in the match; it also meant that he went down in history as only the third Englishman to be sent off at Wembley, after Kevin Keegan and Lee Dixon. Andy Hunt scored the game's opening goal on 66 minutes, and would make his loan spell from Newcastle United into a permanent transfer for a fee of £100,000 later in the week. Hunt had capitalized with a header from a goalmouth scramble when Gary Strodder's header was blocked by a combination of Musselwhite and the crossbar, and Taylor's cross was knocked on to Hunt by Nicky Reid. Reid scored his first goal for Albion with an 18-yard strike on 82 minutes after being assisted by Donovan, who countered a Vale attack by running past the halfway line.
Cardiff captain Jimmy Blair and Willie Davies had to return to the pitch from the dressing room to make an announcement to the waiting crowd that the goal stood and Cardiff had subsequently progressed. The team's victory over Leicester saw them reach the semifinal of the FA Cup for the second time in five seasons where they were drawn against fellow First Division side Blackburn Rovers. With semifinal ties traditionally played at a neutral venue, the match was held at Meadow Lane, the home ground of Notts County, attracting a relatively low crowd of 20,000. Cardiff made a last minute change when Len Davies was replaced by Nicholson in the starting line-up and it was Nicholson who opened the scoring after just six minutes when he headed in after a goalmouth scramble from a corner.
Stuart Pearson then shot at the Arsenal goal but his shot went across the goalmouth, where England international Trevor Brooking was the fastest player to react; with the Arsenal defence stranded he flicked a header past Jennings for the only goal of the game after 13 minutes. Arsenal and West Ham both had attacks during the rest of the first half, Arsenal having more of the game as had been anticipated, but Phil Parkes and the West Ham defence held firm and they were unable to unlock the West Ham defence. The second half was again mainly Arsenal in possession, but the underdogs held out and almost made it two with minutes remaining. Paul Allen was through on goal with only Pat Jennings to beat, Young tackled the 17-year-old, taking him down just outside the penalty box.
After drawing 1–1 in the second leg St Johnstone went through 2–1 on aggregate, afterwards Mannus suggested that Rosenberg had been "arrogant" and had underestimated St Johnstone. In the next round St Johnstone won away from home in the first leg again, beating Minsk 1–0, but lost by the same scoreline at home in the second leg and were then defeated on penalties, despite Mannus saving twice during the shoot-out. On 11 August 2013, Mannus sustained a shoulder injury during a match against Kilmarnock, which ruled him out for six weeks. He came back from his injury earlier than expected, making his return on 14 September 2013, in a 2–1 loss against Hibernian. On 18 January 2014, Mannus was sent-off, along with Ryan Stevenson of Hearts after they were involved in an alteration "following an angry goalmouth melee".
Entering the Munster Championship at the semi-final stage by virtue of a bye, Limerick's first game was at home against Tipperary on 9 June 2013. Limerick were very much the underdogs going into the game as, it was believed, the burden of playing in Division 1B of the National Hurling League would ultimately prove their undoing, while Tipperary would exploit time and space to exert unbearable pressure and ultimately restate their credentials as Kilkenny's most likely challengers for the All-Ireland. All did not go to plan for the Premier County, who were 0-03 to 0-01 behind early on and were five down when Seán Tobin scored the opening goal for Limerick after Brendan Cummins had scooped the ball clear in a goalmouth scramble. Limerick led by 1-07 to 0-07 at half-time. John O'Dwyer came off the bench to make his championship debut and scored 1-03 in the second half for Tipp.
The game was even for the first half- hour, then Manfredini scored a shot on the turn to give Roma the lead. They doubled their lead a quarter of an hour into the second half, "thanks once more to the brilliant opportunism of Manfredini", whom the Birmingham Mail described as "a splendid centre-forward who acted as a one-man attack for most of the match". Despite most of the attacking play coming from the home side, they found Cudicini in excellent form, and it was not until the last ten minutes of the match that Mike Hellawell's snap-shot surprised the goalkeeper to make it 2-1. With just two minutes left of normal time, Harris hit the bar, and in a goalmouth scramble, the ball was forced home by Bryan Orritt – who had fallen out of favour and been on the transfer list for several months – to give Birmingham a late equaliser.
In the 1985–86 season, Sproson was appointed as club captain, and missed just two games as Port Vale were again promoted out of the Fourth Division; he was again selected in the PFA team of the year. He scored four goals in 52 appearances in the 1986–87 season, as the only real constant presence in the Vale defence. He missed just four of Vale's 56 games in the 1987–88 season, and claimed the winning goal in the FA Cup giant-killing of First Division side Tottenham Hotspur after getting the better of goalkeeper Tony Parks and centre-back Neil Ruddock in a goalmouth scramble that resulted; Sproson later claimed he also made the best tackle of his career in the game when he lunged in front of Clive Allen to block a Mitchell Thomas cross. The 1988–89 season saw Vale promoted from the Third Division; Sproson scored five goals in 29 games.
An 8-9 to 6-4 defeat of Tipperary in the decider gave Brennan his first National Hurling League medal. He added a second winners' medal to his collection in 1941 following a defeat of Dublin. An outbreak of foot and mouth disease severely hampered the 1941 championship.
Rehhagel utilized Traianos Dellas as Greece's sweeper to great success, as Greece became European champions. For Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, Brazilian international Lúcio adopted the sweeper role too, but was also not afraid to travel long distances with the ball, often ending up in the opposition's final third. Although this position has become largely obsolete in modern football formations, due to the use of zonal marking and the offside trap, certain players such as Daniele De Rossi, Leonardo Bonucci, Javi Martínez and David Luiz have played a similar role as a ball-playing central defender in a 3–5–2 or 3–4–3 formation; in addition to their defensive skills, their technique and ball-playing ability allowed them to advance into midfield after winning back possession, and function as a secondary playmaker for their teams. Some goalkeepers, who are comfortable leaving their goalmouth to intercept and clear through balls, and who generally participate more in play, such as René Higuita, Manuel Neuer, Edwin van der Sar, Fabien Barthez, Marc- André ter Stegen, and Hugo Lloris, among others, have been referred to as sweeper-keepers.
