In 1975, an obscure rock band called Gekirin record a song called "Fish Story" that anticipates the sound of punk rock that's just beginning in New York and London. The band breaks up shortly after "Fish Story" is released due to record company interference, but the song has an ongoing life over the years. The film jumps between decades as the recording plays a role in several seemingly unrelated scenarios: a member of the hospitality staff on a ferry (Mirai Moriyama) wins the heart of a beautiful girl while battling hijackers; Masaru (Gaku Hamada) and his buddies look for women on a lonely and boring evening; a comet heads towards Earth while a strange man in a record store lectures those around him about the impending destruction of the Earth; and how Gekirin came to write the song.

The number of alleged appearances of lake monsters all across northern Utah caused some people to speculate that there was an underground channel connecting the Great Salt Lake and other waterways to Bear Lake. Interest was high enough that at one point even LDS Church president Brigham Young decided to investigate the claims to find out whether the story was “an honest tale of a serpent, or only a fish story” and went as far as sending a large rope to Paris, Idaho to aid in capturing the monster. The life of Philip Mills as Doris featured in the one- act play Simply Stunning: The Doris Fish Story, which was performed at the Theater Rhinoceros Studio in September 2002. The script was adapted by Phillip R. Ford from biographical remarks Fish made in stage shows and in the column Fish wrote for the gay newspaper The Sentinel in the late 1980s. Ford (who also directed Mills' movie Vegas in Space) directed the play, which starred Arturo Galster In 2002, artworks by Doris were included in the Dead Gay Artists, Tin Sheds, University of Sydney, New South Wales, 1–20 February curated by Robert Lake. The exhibition also included the works of fellow artists Doug Erskine, Eddy Hackenberg, Jasper Havoc, Brad Levido, David McDiarmid, and Peter Tully.

Kelly's acting career includes a typecast role as DJ "Bebe Jesús" in the 1976 Barbra Streisand version of A Star Is Born and the role of Father John Voss in the Clint Eastwood movie The Enforcer, as well as many television roles, including two CHiPs episodes from 1978 and the classic WKRP in Cincinnati "Fish Story" episode in 1979. He also provided the voice of the archvillian The Lightning Bug in the 1979 serial spoof J-Men Forever. In addition to acting, Kelly served a short stint as announcer on the game show The Pop 'N Rocker Game, hosted by Jon Bauman. Photograph of a whale shark, the largest known species of fish In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, naturalists, interpreting the Jonah story as a historical account, became obsessed with trying to identify the exact species of the fish that swallowed Jonah. In the mid-nineteenth century, Edward Bouverie Pusey, professor of Hebrew at Oxford University, claimed that the Book of Jonah must have been authored by Jonah himself and argued that the fish story must be historically true, or else it would not have been included in the Bible. Pusey attempted to scientifically catalogue the fish, hoping to "shame those who speak of the miracle of Jonah's preservation in the fish as a thing less credible than any of God's other miraculous doings". The debate over the fish in the Book of Jonah played a major role during Clarence Darrow's cross-examination of William Jennings Bryan at the Scopes Trial in 1925.
