Deep Brillante started third favourite for the Grade 1 Satsuki Sho at Nakayama on 15 April and finished third of the eighteen runners behind Gold Ship and World Ace. The 79th running of the Tokyo Yushun took place over 2400 metres on firm ground at Tokyo on 27 May. World Ace headed the betting from Gold Ship with Deep Brillante third choice on 7.5/1.
Manado began his second season in the Prix Djebel at Maisons-Laffitte Racecourse on 9 April. He started the 5/10 favourite despite being less than fully fit, but was beaten a length by Vitiges. Manado was then sent to England for the 2000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile course at Newmarket and started the 4/1 second favourite behind Wollow. He traveled well in the early stages but then began to struggle on the firm ground and finished ninth of the seventeen runners.
The race took place on 28 September 2002 on good to firm ground, and sent off the 11/10 favourite she was held up in touch, switching left and then making steady headway 2 furlongs out. She led inside the final furlong and won the one mile race comfortably, beating the next season's Epsom Oaks winner Casual Look into second place by one and a half lengths. After winning this race Soviet Song was installed as favourite for the 2003 1,000 Guineas classic race by bookmakers.
Unusually, the race was run on firm ground and the presence of several pacemakers ensured that the early pace was very fast. Eddery retrained the filly in the early stages before moving to the outside to make her challenge in the straight. Detroit made rapid progress, overtaking Ela-Mana- Mou and Three Troikas inside the last 200 m and holding the late run of Argument to win by half a length. The winning time of 2:28.0 was a new record for the race.
His trainer John Gosden helped tend to the injured Rewilding, giving the colt a "final munch of grass" before he was euthanised. Gosden said that Nathaniel was still improving and indicated that his next target would probably be the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Shortly before the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Gosden announced that Nathaniel would miss the race as he would be unsuited by the prevailing firm ground. Nathaniel was rerouted to the Champion Stakes over ten furlongs at Ascot two weeks later.
The origin of the Mercurial Vapors can be traced back to 1998, when Ronaldo debuted the original Nike Air Mercurial boots. The boots were originally released in black, but a version in silver/blue/yellow was released for the 1998 World Cup and a blue/black version followed soon after. All boots were made in Soft Ground (SG) and Firm Ground (FG) varieties, with the SG version using non-removable studs. In 1999, the Mercurial 2 was released in two colourways, black/blue and black/red.
Sunset in Playa Girón This bay is approximately south of Jagüey Grande, west of the city of Cienfuegos, and southeast from the capital city Havana. On the western side of the bay, coral reefs border the main Zapata Swamp, part of the Zapata Peninsula. On the eastern side, beaches border margins of firm ground with mangroves and extensive areas of swampland to the north and east. At the north end of the bay, the village of Buena Ventura is adjacent to Playa Larga (Long Beach).
After the First Anglo-Maratha war, Warren Hastings declared in 1783 that the peace established with the Marathas was on such a firm ground that it was not going to be shaken for years to come. The British believed that a new permanent approach was needed to establish and maintain continuous contact with the Peshwa's court in Pune. The British appointed Charles Malet, a senior merchant from Bombay, to be a permanent Resident at Pune because of his knowledge of the languages and customs of the region.
Aviculturists report that the males' contribution to reproduction ends after copulation. This is not always the case in instances where pairs are maintained in mixed species enclosures and encouraged to nest naturally. The nest is somewhat vestigial, consisting of twigs and large leaves scraped together on low-lying firm ground, be it on a termite mound a short distance above the forest floor, or the forest floor itself. P. malacense is one of the few pheasants known with certainty to have a one-egg clutch.
Proponents of this side are of the belief that horses should be left barefoot and given ample opportunity to develop the internal and external hoof tissues by natural means. For example, regular impact on firm ground stimulates sensory receptors in the hoof that, in turn, induce a physiologic response to promote strengthening of the hoof wall and an increased sole thickness. On the other hand, some insist that the choice of whether or not to shoe should be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Carroll House raced just behind the leaders on the wide outside of the field, turning into the straight in fourth place. He overtook Saint Andrews 200 metres from the finish and won by one and a half lengths from Behera. Following his win in the Arc, Carroll House was sold to the Japanese breeder Zenya Yoshida, owner of the Shadai Stallion Station. On his final appearance of the year he ran on unsuitably firm ground in the Japan Cup at Tokyo Racecourse on 26 November.
Fortunately, he has fully recovered and has already stood a firm ground in goal during the first rounds of the 2006–07 season. Artmedia lost the home leg of their UEFA Cup round of 32 tie with Levski Sofia 1–0 and were knocked out of the tournament after an away defeat of 2–0. After the successful season the coach Vladimír Weiss left to FC Saturn Ramenskoe. Several players left the club, among others Ján Ďurica to FC Saturn Ramenskoe, Balázs Borbély to 1.
Jacques Derrida allocates this concept and applies it specifically to language, its structure and play. This application acknowledges that there is, in fact, no center or origin within language and its many parts, no firm ground from which to base any Truth or truths. This shock allows for two reactions in Derrida's philosophy: the more negative, melancholic response, which he designates as Rousseauistic, or the more positive Nietzschean affirmation. Rousseau's perspective focuses on deciphering the truth and origin of language and its many signs, an often exhaustive occupation.
Visit to the park is ideal between 0600 and 1000 hrs in the morning and 1530 and 1800 hrs in the afternoon, when the sangai deer comes out to feed in herds. A boat trip along the labyrinthine boat routes passing through colourful water plants would be a good way to see the park. An adventurous trip would be to take a walk through the park but the phumdi is not a firm ground. Manipur Tourism Department arranges conducted day tours to the Loktak Lake and the Keibul Lamjao Park.
His next two runs, both on firm ground, were disappointing, as he finished unplaced behind Takeover Target in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and fifth of the eight runners behind Pivotal Point in the Sprint Stakes. His next race was the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes at York in August. With the ground now in his favour, he was strongly fancied starting 5/1 third favourite in a field of fourteen. Reverence, who "adored the ground" took the lead from the start and opened up a clear lead approaching the last furlong.
In the straight, Black Tarquin moved up to challenge and drew level a furlong from the finish, but Alycidon pulled away again in the closing stages to win by five lengths. His victory was notable as it came after a period in which the race had been dominated by foreign-bred horses. In July he appeared to be unsuited by the firm ground, but still won the Goodwood Cup by two lengths from Riding Mill. He completed his career with an eight length success in the Doncaster Cup in September.
Head tracked the leaders before moving up to join the leaders with 300m left to run. The colt then produced a "spectacular surge" to go clear of the field and won very easily by five lengths from To-Agori-Mou, who beat Kings Lake by a nose for second place. The winning time of 1:34.5 on firm ground was the second fastest time recorded over the course. Three weeks later, Northjet contested the Prix du Moulin over 1600m at Longchamp and started the 6/10 favourite against eleven opponents.
In critical rationalism the scientific approach should be maintained in sociology, and wherever the use of an induction method is not possible, it should be avoided. This leads to a sociology having a firm ground in observations and assured deductions that cannot be ignored in politics. For critical rationalism, sociology is best conceived as a set of empirical questions subject to scientific investigation. Frankfurt School critical theory, by contrast, denies that sociology can be severed from its metaphysical heritage; empirical questions are necessarily rooted in substantive philosophical issues.
Tango canyengue is a rhythmic style of tango that originated in the early 1900s and is still popular today. It is one of the original roots styles of tango and contains all fundamental elements of traditional Tango from the River Plate region (Uruguay and Argentina). In tango canyengue the dancers share one axis, dance in a closed embrace, and with the legs relaxed and slightly bent. Tango canyengue uses body dissociation for the leading, walking with firm ground contact, and a permanent combination of on- and off-beat rhythm.
Following the race the filly was bought privately by Sheikh Mohammed. Untold was then sent to Ireland for the Irish Oaks at the Curragh on 12 July and started 8/11 favourite against seven opponents. Swinburn chose to ride her in preference to Colorspin, but again made the wrong decision, as Untold appeared unsuited by the soft ground and finished a distant third behind her stablemate and the Irish filly Fleur Royale. On 19 August Untold was one of eleven fillies to contest the Yorkshire Oaks on good to firm ground at York Racecourse.
Standard operating instructions recommend that after travelling some miles on firm ground, the vehicle should be bounced over a curb or railway sleeper to lift wheels clear of the ground, one-by-one, to allow them to spring back and release the windup. Excess windup could easily lead to a broken gear in the bevel or hub gearboxes. To indicate this, white lines were painted across the ends of the hubs. Normally the lines should be parallel but as windup occurred they would become misaligned, indicating the need to release this.
Galileo, however, had already gone clear and ran on well to beat Golan by three and a half lengths. After the race, Stoute offered no real excuses, except to say that Golan may have been unsuited by the firm ground. Three weeks later, Golan again challenged Galileo in the Irish Derby at the Curragh. He started 4/1 second favourite, but was never a threat to the favourite, and although he made some progress in the straight, he was beaten eight lengths, finishing third behind Galileo and the Derby Italiano winner Morshdi.
Germany was a bay horse with black socks sired by 1987 the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Trempolino, who was bred in United States and bought as a yearling for $70,000 by the British trainer Ben Hanbury on behalf of Jaber Abdullah at the 1992 Keeneland September sales. He was trained by Bruno Schütz and was raced almost all of his career in Germany with an exception of the 1995 British Champion Stakes in which he failed to give his running on the good to firm ground.
Shareta (foaled 8 May 2008) is an Irish-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was a top-class middle-distance runner who showed her best form on good or firm ground. After finishing second on her only start as a juvenile she won three races including the Prix de Thiberville and Prix Minerve in 2011 and came second in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. She went on to greater success in 2012 when she recorded Group One victories in the Yorkshire Oaks and the Prix Vermeille.
By 2001 Super Tassa had developed back problems and received regular acupuncture treatment. In the spring she finished second in the Prix Noale over 2400 metres and a handicap race over 2000 metres at Milan. On 27 May at Capannelle on good to firm ground, the filly started the 16.6/1 outsider for the Group Two Premio Carlo d'Alessio over 2800 metres. Ridden as in several of her previous races by Palmerio Agus she was restrained in the early stages and was still last of the eight runners 400 metres from the finish.
Hethersett escaped with minor injuries, but Carr sustained a broken shoulder which kept him out of racing for almost two months. The race was won by the Irish-trained outsider Larkspur. Hethersett ran poorly on firm ground at Goodwood Racecourse in July, finishing seventh behind Gay Challenger in the Gordon Stakes but returned to form in August at York. Ridden by Frankie Durr in the Great Voltigeur Stakes over one and a half miles he started at odds of 15/2 and won by a short head from Miralgo.
Miralla (1972 - after 1990) was an Irish thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed moderate form as a two-year-old in 1974 but mage great improvement in the following spring when she won the Athasi Stakes and then recorded a five-length success in the Irish 1000 Guineas. She was unsuited by the firm ground which prevailed for the rest of the year an never won again. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare and was based in the United States before returning to Ireland in 1986.
These were available in the XTRX Blades for soft ground use, which came with a stud key and could be loosened or tightened at the owners comfort and also the red firm ground blades for hard surfaces. These were not detachable and came fixated to the boot. A limited edition version was also released in "Japan Blue" and was worn by Alex of the Japan national team during the tournament. During the 2002–03 playing season, they also released an all-red version with the Adidas stripes in silver.
In the 1980s, university alpine clubs across South Korea offered a distinctive niche for those unable to find from elsewhere a solution for sociopolitical and existential crises. South Korea's collegiate culture in the late 1980s reached the culmination of two decades of civil conflict for democracy. Common among university students were lively debates and strong moral convictions for fellow citizens’ rights and well-being. On the other hand, the drastic economic advancement and relative wealth combined with the nationalistic agenda had bolstered a firm ground for the explosive boom of Himalayan expeditions.
Blackstairmountain began his racing career in 2009, when he won National Hunt Flat races at Thurles and Tipperary and a conventional flat race at Galway Racecourse. In the following year, he competed in hurdle races and recorded his first major success when taking the Grade I Evening Herald Champion Novice Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival in May. After the race, Mullins explained that the horse had been particularly well-suited by the firm ground. Blackstairmountain failed to win in five hurdle races in the 2010/2011 National Hunt season before being campaigned in steeplechases.
Pia returned in August and finished sixth behind Palatch in the Yorkshire Oaks. The filly was then moved up in distance for the Park Hill Stakes over fourteen furlongs on firm ground at Doncaster Racecourse. Starting the 7/2 second favourite she shared the victory as she finished in a dead heat with the favoured Pink Gem. She ran poorly when unplaced in the Sun Chariot Stakes over ten furlongs at Newmarket and was then matched against male opposition in the Champion Stakes over the same course and distance.
The Golden Hair Colt made his racecourse debut at the Derby meeting at Epsom in the early summer of 1931. He had already acquired a reputation on the basis of his performances on the training gallops and started favourite, but finished third, a failure ascribed to his lack of experience and dislike of the firm ground. It proved to be his only defeat of the year. In June he was sent to Royal Ascot where he won the Chesham Stakes and then travelled to Sandown where he won the valuable National Breeders' Produce Stakes.
After the race, Chapple-Hyam described the winner as "some horse, as good as I have ever trained". John Reid said "When he gets cut in the ground he is different class. I have a very soft spot for Dr Devious but he could not have produced a performance like this". On 14 June, Turtle Island started 15/8 favourite for the St James's Palace Stakes on firm ground at Royal Ascot, but after briefly taking the lead in the straight he finished third behind Grand Lodge and Distant View.
As a two-year-old in 1940, Dancing Time finished unplaced in her only racecourse appearance, a maiden race in June. On 1 May 1941, in only her second race, Dancing Time contested the 128th running of the 1000 Guineas which was run over the July course at Newmarket rather than its traditional home on the Rowley Mile. Ridden by Dick Perryman she started at odds of 100/8 in thirteen-runner field. Racing on firm ground she won by a length from Beausite, with Keystone two lengths away in third place.
On his four-year-old debut, Ela-Mana- Mou won for his new owner and trainer, taking the Group Three Earl of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket in April. He was found to be jarred up afterwards, and Peter Wragg subsequently discovered that the horse's neck and shoulders had been regularly treated by a physiotherapist, Pam Leadham, while he was at Harwood's stable. Hern engaged her to continue treating to the horse at his yard. He also determined that he would not be able to run Ela-Mana-Mou on firm ground.
Since the entire measurement system is entangled (by quantum entanglement), the collapse of a single particle initiates the collapse of the entire measurement apparatus. Erich Joos and Heinz-Dieter Zeh claim that the phenomenon of quantum decoherence, which was put on firm ground in the 1980s, resolves the problem. The idea is that the environment causes the classical appearance of macroscopic objects. Zeh further claims that decoherence makes it possible to identify the fuzzy boundary between the quantum microworld and the world where the classical intuition is applicable.
Picking his way through the field, Seabiscuit briefly led. As they thundered down the back straight, Seabiscuit became trapped in third place, behind leader Whichcee and Wedding Call on the outside. Trusting in his horse's acceleration, Pollard steered between the leaders and burst into the lead, taking the firm ground just off the rail. As Seabiscuit showed his old surge, Wedding Call and Whichcee faltered, and Pollard drove his horse on, taking "The Hundred Grander" by a length and a half from the fast-closing Kayak II under jockey Leon Haas.
When loaded, the hoof physiologically changes its shape. In part, this is a result of solar concavity, which has a variable depth, in the region of 1–1.5 cm. In part, it is a result of the arched shape of the lateral lower profile of the walls and sole, so that when an unloaded hoof touches a firm ground surface, there is only contact at toe and heels (active contact). A loaded hoof has a much greater area of ground contact (passive contact), covering the lower wall edge, most of the sole, bars and frog.
A Volvo FM truck belonging to Damonte Trasporti S.R.L. and in services for Basko Supermercati, painted in blue and green, became a widely publicised symbol of the disaster because it remained standing almost at the edge of the collapsed section. The 37-year-old driver at the time of the accident recounted to the media how he looked in shock as the bridge busy with dense traffic collapsed in front of him, as he brought his vehicle to a stop and ran back until he reached firm ground.
As a three-year-old in 1974, the colt began by winning the Sandown Classic Trial from the future Epsom Derby winner Snow Knight, who was carrying five pounds more in weight. In the Lingfield Derby Trial he again defeated Snow Knight, this time at level weights. At Epsom, he seemed to be unsuited by the firm ground and finished fourth in the Derby, behind Snow Knight, Imperial Prince and Giacometti. Bustino was then sent to France for the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp Racecourse, in which he finished second of the eighteen runners, beaten two lengths by Sagaro.
On his four-year-old debut Bikala started the 8/5 favourite for the Group One Prix Ganay over 2100m in April. He led from the start and won by half a length from Lancastrian, with Al Nasr, Vayrann, Kalaglow and April Run among the beaten horses. In July he was sent overseas for the first time when he contested the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes over one and a half miles on firm ground at Ascot Racecourse. He started second favourite behind his half-brother Assert, with Kalaglow, Glint of Gold and Height of Fashion being the other fancied runners.
As there is no differential action between the wheels on each side, this causes a lot of wind-up in the bevels and shafts. Standard operating instructions for the Stalwart recommend that after travelling some miles on firm ground, the vehicle should be bounced over a kerb or railway sleeper to lift wheels clear of the ground, one-by-one, so allowing them to spring back and release the windup. Excess windup could easily lead to a broken gear in the bevel or hub gearboxes. To indicate this, white lines were painted across the ends of the hubs.
Appearing to relish the firm ground, she produced what Timeform described as "a spectacular performance", moving up on the inside rail to take the lead inside the last quarter mile and winning very easily by four lengths from the favourite Sabre Dance. Three days later, Stanerra contested the Hardwicke Stakes over two furlongs further at the same course. She moved into the lead on the turn into the straight and quickly went clear to win by one and a half lengths from Electric, with the Coronation Cup winner Be My Native twelve lengths further back in third.
Stanerra did not recover well from her flight, and after her arrival in Japan she was kept in condition with six hours' walking exercise a day. Racing on her favoured firm ground, Stanerra was not among the early leaders but produced a strong late run to take the lead in the closing strides and won by a head from Kyoei Promise. She was the first European-trained winner of the race. Stanerra remained in training in 1984, but had several training setbacks and appeared only once, when finishing last of the five runners in the Nassau Stakes.
Reams of Verse missed the early trial races in 1997 as she had suffered from a cough and Cecil felt that she would be unsuited by the prevailing firm ground. She therefore began her three-year-old season in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on 4 May. She was not among the favourites, starting at odds of 11/1, and finished sixth of the fifteen runners behind Sleepytime. Nine days after her run at Newmarket, Reams of Verse was moved up to ten furlongs for the Musidora Stakes (a trial race for the Epsom Oaks) at York.
On his racecourse debut Summoner contested a maiden race for two-year-olds over six furlongs on good to firm ground at Lingfield Park Racecourse on 25 August in which he started at odds of 7/1 and finished sixth of the sixteen runners. On 6 November the colt started at 8/1 in a similar event on soft ground at Doncaster Racecourse in which he was ridden by Richard Hughes. He led from the start went clear of his opponents and won by three lengths from Royal Cavalier despite being eased down by Hughes in the closing stages.
Sweet Emma began her racing career in March 1982 when she won a maiden race over five furlongs at Naas Racecourse. She followed up shortly afterwards in a minor race over the same distance on soft ground at the Curragh. After her two wins in spring the filly was sold privately to Jackie Ward Ramos and was transferred to the stable of Kevin Prendergast. Four months after her last race Sweet Emma was stepped up to Group 1 class for the Phoenix Stakes on firm ground at Leopardstown Racecourse on 7 August, in which she was ridden by Gabriel Curran.
He finished strongly, but was beaten into fourth place behind Hello Gorgeous, Master Willie and Water Mill. On 4 June, Tyrnavos was one of twenty-four colts to contest the 201st running of the Derby over one and a half miles on firm ground at Epsom Downs Racecourse. He was well-fancied for the race despite some concerns that, as the son of a sprinter (Stilvi), he might struggle to stay the distance. The early stages were very rough and Tyrnavos was blocked and bumped several times before being forced to the wide outside on the final turn.
Ridden by Lester Piggott, she won by a head from Harmonise, a filly who was carrying five pounds more. On 7 June, Juliette Marny contested the 197th running of the Oaks Stakes at Epsom and started at odds of 12/1 in a field of twelve fillies. Piggott had the choice of Tree's two entries and elected to ride Juliette Marny ahead of Jock Whitney's filly Brilliantine. Racing on firm ground, she took the lead a furlong from the finish and drew clear to win very easily by four lengths from Val's Girl with the favourite Moonlight Night in third.
Many of his attempts to connect early Irish law to Celtic Law and even to Indo-European law have come under considerable doubt. However, his contributions are also lasting on account of his production of numerous translations and editions of legal texts. His final major work, the six volume Corpus Iuris Hibernici, collected almost all texts in the native Irish legal tradition, thus offering later scholars a firm ground to stand upon.D.A. Binchy, Corpus Iuris Hibernici, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies Binchy was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1962.
Dylan Mouth began his second season in Rome, winning the Premio Lodi Vecchio in March and the Listed Premio Emanuele Filiberto in April. He was moved up in class in May for the Group Two Derby Italiano at San Siro Rcecourse in May. He started the 2.1/1 favourite and took the lead in the lasr 50 metres to win by one and a half lengths from his stablemate Autre Qualite. He was then sent to England for the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot but failed to cope with the firm ground and finished unplaced behind Eagle Top.
It became St Nicholas', the parish church of Strood in 1193 and is situated where the Watling Street left the firm ground to run over the marshes to the Medway bridge. Bishop Gilbert de Glanvill claimed Frinsdsbury back from the monks "as belonging to the maintenance of his table" in 1185. According to Hasted the bishop succeeded in obtaining the church, but the manor remained in the possession of the monks until the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII in 1523. Barnard however records that in 1256, the church of Frindsbury (and thus the income) was returned to the Bishop.
In the Derby on 26 May he started at 7/1 in a field of nineteen, with Bend Or being made the 2-1 favourite. The race, which was run on very firm ground, attracted the customary huge crowd. Among those in attendance many MPs, as Parliament was adjourned for the day despite the fierce objections of one member, Sir Wilfrid Lawson, who denounced the sport as "rascality and roguery". After a delay caused by the crowd overflowing onto the racecourse, Robert the Devil broke quickly and was sent into the lead by his jockey, Rossiter, with a mile to travel.
The race, run on soft ground, produced a blanket finish, with little more than two lengths covering the first ten finishers. Hours After prevailed by a short head from Ghost Buster's [sic], just ahead of Emmson, Exactly Sharp, Nasr El Arab and Waki River. Hours After was sent outside France for the first time when he contested the Irish Derby over one and a half miles at the Curragh three weeks later. Ridden on this occasion by Gerald Mosse, he started at odds of 14/1 and finished ninth of the eleven runners on good to firm ground behind Kahyasi.
English Heritage, responsible for managing England's historic sites, used both theories to designate the site for Bosworth Field. Without preference for either theory, they constructed a single continuous battlefield boundary that encompasses the locations proposed by both Williams and Foss. The region has experienced extensive changes over the years, starting after the battle. Holinshed stated in his chronicle that he found firm ground where he expected the marsh to be, and Burton confirmed that by the end of the 16th century, areas of the battlefield were enclosed and had been improved to make them agriculturally productive.
Steiner takes Descartes' dictum, "I think, therefore I am," to signify that "I am certain . . . that [thinking] exists in the sense that I myself bring it forth,"Wilson, p 30. Cf. Steiner's own wording, in translation: "My investigation touches firm ground only when I find an object which exists in a sense which I can derive from the object itself. But I am myself such an object in that I think..." However, Steiner advances the objection (common to many others, beginning in Descartes' own time),Cottingham, Meditations, Objections and Replies that the further claim that I am is more problematic.
After the race Hannon said "It was firm ground in France and he came back a little jarred up, so we gave him time some time off. He's a good horse, he travels so well and has got a good racing brain". The colt was back in France in August for the Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville Racecourse and ran seventh behind Immortal Verse. On 24 September Dick Turpin was sent to Italy for the Group 1 Premio Vittorio di Capua over 1600 metres at San Siro Racecourse in Milan in which he was ridden by Christophe Soumillon.
From his helicopter buzzing overhead Tower ordered Company C, which was at the rear of the column and had not yet entered Xom Ong Doi, to turn south for a short distance before turning west again to bring flanking fire onto the VC. As the company performed the maneuver, several of the vehicles bogged down in the marshland that bordered the hamlet. The rest backed out to the firm ground on the road. The immobilized vehicles provided supporting fire, while the remainder of the unit began a house-to-house sweep through the hamlet. This clearing operation was a brutal affair.
On 2 October, Gentilhombre attempted to become the second horse to win back-to-back renewals of the Prix de l'Abbaye. Ridden as usual by Paul Cook, he started joint second-favourite behind Girl Friend at odds of 3/1 on good to firm ground. The other runners included Madang (Premio Melton, Prix du Gros Chêne), Karosa, Haveroid (William Hill Sprint Championship), Raga Navarro and King of Macedon. Gentilhombre produced what Timeform described as "a tremendous display", taking the lead at half way and accelerating clear of his opponents to win by four lengths from Madang.
In Chile, where the habit of drinking mate had taken firm ground during colonial times, its popularity gave slowly way after independence to drinks popular in Europe, coffee and tea that entered the country through its increasingly busy ports. The spread of tea and coffee consumption in Chile, to the detriment of mate, began in the upper classes. The first coffee shop in Chile appeared in Santiago in 1808. German botanist Eduard Friedrich Poeppig described in 1827 a wealthy family in Chile where the old people drank yerba mate with bombilla while the younger preferred Chinese tea.
On 7 June, May Hill contested the 197th running of the Oaks Stakes at Epsom. Looking unsuited by the firm ground, she turned into the straight in eleventh place and although she made sty progress in the closing stages she finished a distant fourth behind Juliette Marny, Val's Girl and Moonlight Night. The filly then returned to winning form in a minor race over a mile and a half at Haydock Park Racecourse, winning easily from her only opponent. In August at York Racecourse, May Hill faced Juliette Marny again in the Yorkshire Oaks, and started at odds of 4/1.
Revoque pulled away to win by two and a half lengths from Symonds Inn. The form of the race was later boosted when In Command, who finished third, won the Group One Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket in October. Revoque was then moved up to Group One level to contest the Prix de la Salamandre at Longchamp in September, after a plan to run him in the Champagne Stakes was abandoned due to the unsuitably firm ground. In the Longchamp race he was held up by Reid in the early stages before making his challenge in the straight.
The race established Noble Decree as a major contender for The Derby. With Carson again choosing Ksar (who had won the Sandown Classic Trial and the Lingfield Derby Trial) and Lester Piggott opting to partner Cavo Doro (a horse he had bred himself), the ride on Noble Decree in the Derby went to Brian Taylor. He was strongly fancied for the race, which was run on very firm ground, but after running well he dropped away quickly in the straight and finished unplaced behind Morston. He was found to have sustained a serious back injury which ended his racing career.
On her three-year-old debut Dibidale started favourite for the Steve Donoghue Stakes over a mile at Haydock Park Racecourse in April. Racing on very firm ground she took the lead in the straight but then hung to the left in the closing stages and was beaten a head into second place by the colt Scientist. In May, the filly was moved up in distance for the Cheshire Oaks (a trial race for The Oaks) over one and a half miles at Chester Racecourse. She established herself as a leading classic contender by winning by seven lengths from the Noel Murless-trained Mil's Bomb with Venshoon in third.
She was ridden by Oscar Urbina for her two-year-old career in 2002 when she was unbeaten. Her first race as a two-year-old was on 17 July 2002 at Kempton Park Racecourse in the 6 furlong EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes on good to firm ground. With a poor low draw and after missing the start she was slowly away, she dwelt in the rear but made good progress over 3f out. She led the race over 1f out, pressed inside the final furlong by the favourite Airwave (a future Group One winning horse), she ran on well to win by half a length at 6/1.
Ridden by Bruce Raymond, she briefly took second place in the straight before finishing fourth behind Time Charter, Diamond Shoal and Sun Princess, beaten less than four lengths by the winner. Awaasif sustained a minor injury in the Ascot race and did not run again until the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Piggott turned down the chance to ride All Along in order to partner Awaasif, who started at odds of 13/1 in a field of twenty-six runners. Racing on firm ground, Awaasif was never nearer than eighth and eventually finished in thirteenth place, five and a half lengths behind All Along.
Steve Cauthen sent the colt into the lead soon after the start and set a steady pace before accelerating on the final turn. He quickly opened up a clear lead and came home four lengths clear of Seattle Dancer with Trempolino a short head away in third. After a break of two months Risk Me returned in the Waterford Crystal Mile on firm ground at Goodwood on 29 August but finished tailed-off last of the four runners behind Milligram. In the Irish Champion Stakes over ten furlongs at Phoenix Park Racecourse a week later he came fifth of the twelve runners behind Triptych.
View of the Santa María de la Natividad Aztacalco church in La Romita. La Romita is a small section of Roma which used to be an independent village and colonia and whose streets are still significantly different from the rest of Roma. The territory of modern Colonia Roma in pre-Hispanic times consisted of the very shallow waters of Lake Texcoco and a number of very small islands of firm ground, on one of which stood the village of Aztacalco. It was an independent village until the very early 20th century, when it was made its own colonia in 1903 with the name of La Romita.
On 27 November, Alkaased was one of eighteen horses to contest the twenty-fifth running of the Japan Cup at Tokyo Racecourse. The other European runners included Ouija Board, Bago and Warrsan, whilst North America was represented the Breeders' Cup Turf winner Better Talk Now and the Sword Dancer Invitational Handicap winner King's Drama. The locally trained runners included the last two winners of the race Tap Dance City and Zenno Rob Roy, the Tenno Sho winners Heavenly Romance and Suzuka Mambo as well as the NAR champion Cosmo Bulk. Ridden by Dettori he started the 9.6/1 third choice in the betting for a race run on unusually firm ground.
The horse was forced to wear a muzzle in future races Drum Taps had won his first three races on firm ground: he proved less effective on the soft ground which prevailed for the second half of the season. After a two-month break he was made favourite for the Prix Kergorlay at Deauville but was well beaten by the filly Sought Out. In the Irish St. Leger at The Curragh a month later he stayed on strongly in the straight but could finish only third to Mashaallah and Snurge. On his final start of the year in the Prix du Cadran at Longchamp he again finished second to Sought Out.
Against the advice of his trainer, Alper ran Persian War on the Flat in the Newbury Autumn Cup in September. The horse finished fourth in the two-mile race, badly jarred himself on the firm ground, and had to be rested. Persian War returned to racing in December in the Gold Bond Hurdle at Sandown, where he finished second by five lengths to Escalus after swallowing his tongue. He next ran in the Irish Sweeps Hurdle at Fairyhouse but again suffered breathing issues (despite a tongue strap) and lost his position half a mile from home before battling to third place while conceding winner Normandy 12 lbs.
Persian War then returned to Cheltenham as one of the favourites for the Champion Hurdle, with former winners Saucy Kit and Salmon Spray, Gloucestershire Hurdle winner Chorus, Cheltenham Trial Hurdle winner Sempervivum, and top class Mugatpura also in the field. It was rated the best Champion Hurdle for years, and on the firm ground Chorus was made favourite at 7/2 with Persian War second choice at 4/1. His fellow Alper owned stablemate Straight Point led the field with Persian War tracking. Running down the hill, Saucy Kit challenged Persian War before a bad mistake ended his effort and left Persian War clear.
On his first run of 2017 Harry Angel finished second in the Pavilion Stakes at Ascot Racecourse on 3 May, beaten one and a half lengths by the Godolphin colt Blue Point, to whom he was conceding four pounds in weight. At the end of the month he was made 5/6 favourite for the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes on firm ground at Haydock Park. He led from the start and pulled clear in the final furlong to win by four and half lengths from the Spring Cup winner Second Thought. After this race he was bought privately by Godolphin but remained in training with Cox.
In 1998, Nike launched the first "Mercurial" football boot –the R9– a shoe inspired by and designed for Brazilian star Ronaldo, which he debuted at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. The boot is in its thirteenth version the Nike Mercurial Vapor XIII. The boot is available in either Soft Ground (SG; now Soft Ground Pro/SG-Pro), Firm Ground (FG) or Artificial Ground (AG) versions. The SG version's sole plate is fitted with six NikeSnap removable studs, which can be purchased in different lengths, for the first and second models, and traditional screw-in aluminium studs for versions 3 to 8; the FG version has seven moulded blades.
In August Busaca, with Eddery again in the saddle, started at odds of 5/1 for the Group One Yorkshire Oaks over one and a half miles on firm ground at York Racecourse. Her opponents included Dunfermline, Triple First (who had won the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood), Sassabunda (runner-up in the Irish Oaks), Royal Hive and the leading Polish three-year-old Konstelacja. Busaca was always among the leaders in a slowly-run race before going to the front half a mile from the finish. She stayed on strongly in the straight to win by a length from Royal Hive, with Dunfermline five lengths back in third.
Storm seasons or polar winter-weather conditions can inhibit surface warships at sea. Pre-modern armies, especially in Europe, tended to campaign in the summer months - peasant conscripts tended to melt away at harvest time, nor did it make economic sense in an agricultural society to neglect the sowing season. Any modern war of manouevre profits from firm ground - summer can provide dry conditions suitable for marching and transport, frozen snow in winter can also offer a reliable surface for a period, but spring thaws or autumn rains can inhibit campaigning. Rainy-season floods may make rivers temporarily impassable, and winter snow tends to block mountain passes.
On her racecourse debut Cloonlara contested the Hurry-On Stakes over five furlongs at Phoenix Park Racecourse and won by five lengths from Success At Last and seven others. Only two horses appeared to oppose the filly when she was moved up in distance for the Probationers Stakes over six and a half furlongs at the Curragh Racecourse. Starting at odds of 1/10 she won by five lengths, emulating her sire, Sir Ivor, who won the same race in 1967. Cloonlara was then dropped back in distance, and moved up in class for the Group Two Phoenix Stakes over five furlongs on firm ground at Phoenix Park.
On his first appearance as a four-year-old Ballymore was sent to France for the Prix d'Inauguration over 1600 metres at Every Racecourse in April and finished last of the six runners behind Gift Card. In May he was matched against Roberto at level weights in the Nijinsky Stakes over ten furlongs at Leopardstown Racecourse. Roberto started te odd-son favourite but Ballymore got the better of a sustained struggle in the closing stages to win by three quarters of a length. As in 1972, Ballymore did not race in the second half of the season, with Prendergast blaming the firm ground which prevented him from training the horse effectively.
In his first three starts in 2006 Fayr Jag was unplaced in the Duke of York Stakes, Leisure Stakes and King's Stand Stakes. after which David Allan took over from Quinn as his regular jockey. On 1 July he started favourite for the Group Three Chipchase Stakes over six furlongs on good-to-firm ground at Newcastle and recorded his first win in over two years as he took the lead approaching the final furlong and won by half a length from Beckermet. After finishing unplaced behind Les Arcs in the July Cup, the gelding contested the Hackwood Stakes at Newbury on 22 July.
Lochangel (foaled 5 April 1994) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She raced for the connections of her more famous older sister Lochsong and while never matching the achievements of her sibling she became a top-class racemare who excelled in sprint races on firm ground. As a juvenile she was beaten on her debut before winning at Ascot Racecourse in the sixth of what became known as Frankie Dettori's "Magnificent Seven". After failing to win in four attempts in 1997 she reached her peak as a four-year-old in 1998 when she won two races including the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes at York Racecourse in August.
The prevailing firm ground led to the late withdrawal of four horses including the strongly-fancied Irish filly Necklace. Ridden as on her debut by Kieren Fallon she started the 3/1 second favourite behind the previously undefeated Punctilious whilst the other five runners were River Belle (Princess Margaret Stakes), Ithaca (runner in the Prestige Stakes), Menhoubah (third in the Moyglare Stud Stakes) and the highly regarded maiden winners Sundrop and Tarot Card. Fallon settled the filly behind the leaders as Punctilious set the pace. Red Bloom overtook the favourite approaching the final furlong and won by a length and a half from Sundrop.
There is one high- end model for the first version, the Hypervenom Phantom; whereas, there are two high-end models for the second version—the Nike Hypervenom Phantom II, which is a mid-cut variant and the Nike Hypervenom Phinish, the low-cdmvut variant. However, Nike chose to discontinue the Nike Hypervenom Phinish from the third silo onwards due to confusion that the mid-cut version was better than the low-cut. The mid-cut version will be called "Hypervenom Phantom DF". The boot is available in Soft Ground (SG), Firm Ground (FG) or Artificial Ground (AG) versions in which all feature a glass nylon soleplate.
As at Eylau, the approach of night seemed to preclude a decisive success, but in June and on firm ground the old mobility of the French reasserted its value. The infantry division of Dupont advanced rapidly from Posthenen, the cavalry divisions drove back the Russian squadrons into the now congested masses of infantry on the river bank, and finally the artillery general Sénarmont advanced a mass of guns to case-shot range. The terrible effect of the close range artillery saw the Russian defense collapsing within minutes, as canister decimated the ranks. Ney's exhausted infantry succeeded in pursuing the broken regiments of Bennigsen's left into the streets of Friedland.
In early July, there was great concern at the Docker Creek base when Mackay and Neale in the Percival Gull failed to return from a flight to Lake Anec. The backup Gipsy Moth with Robertson and Bennett aboard began a search and discovered the missing aircraft bogged on the edge of the salt lake. The rescue crew were guided to a safe landing place by signals from the men on the ground, and they needed to remain overnight as all four men were required to manoeuvre the bogged aircraft to firm ground. This was done the next day, and both aircraft returned safely to base.
The effects two races on firm ground meant that Cyllene's connections abandoned plans to run him for a third time at the meeting (in the Hardwicke Stakes) and the colt was given an extended rest. In autumn there was much anticipation of a meeting between Cyllene and the Triple Crown winner Flying Fox, with Charles Day Rose being reported as saying that he "looked forward to beating" the outstanding three-year-old in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket. When Cyllene returned to serious training however, it was decided that the risk of the horse breaking down was too great and he was retired to stud without racing again.
Diktat returned to England and started 13/8 favourite for the Stanley Leisure Sprint Cup on good to firm ground at Haydock Park on 4 September. The sixteen-runner field included Bertolini, Bold Edge, Sampower Star and Tomba, as well as Wannabe Grand, Arkadian Hero (Mill Reef Stakes), Imperial Beauty (Dick Poole Stakes), Grazia (Hackwood Stakes), Halmahera (Cornwallis Stakes) and Pipalong (Two- Year-Old Trophy). Bertolini set the pace with Diktat racing towards the rear of the field in the early stages. The favourite appeared to be under pressure but was switched to the left inside the final furlong and caught Bertolini in the closing strides to win by a neck.
On her racecourse debut, Miss Beatrix started 5/2 favourite for a maiden race over five furlongs on heavy ground at the Curragh on 26 March. She finished third behind Drayton and Latin Walk but was later promoted to second after the winner failed a drug test. On 6 June she contested a similar event at Tipperary Racecourse and came home third of the thirteen runners behind City of Tribes and Rabatash. Eight days after her defeat at Tipperary, the filly was stepped up in distance for a maiden over seven furlongs on good to firm ground at Leopardstown Racecourse and started 4/6 favourite against nine opponents.
Swinburn sent the colt into the lead three furlongs from the finish and Carroll House held off the challenge of Assatis to win by a neck, with the future St Leger winner Michelozzo in third. Eleven days later, Carroll House contested Britain's most prestigious weight-for-age race, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot Racecourse. Racing on unsuitably firm ground, he started a 33/1 outsider and finished fifth of the seven runners behind Nashwan, Cacoethes, Top Class and Sheriff's Star. On 2 September, Carroll House was moved down in distance for the Group One Phoenix Champion Stakes over ten furlongs at Phoenix Park Racecourse in Dublin.
This they easily crossed because they knew where the firm ground and the easy passages in this region were to be found; but the Romans in attempting to follow them were not so successful. However, the Germans swam across again and some others got over by a bridge a little way up-stream, after which they assailed the barbarians from several sides at once and cut down many of them. There is a recent hypothesis that some of the native tribes, identified as Britons by the Romans, may have been Germanic- language speakers, but most scholars disagree with this due to an insufficient record of local languages in Roman-period artefacts.Forster et al.
The colt was then stepped up in class for the Group Two Gimcrack Stakes at York Racecourse on 19 August and was made the 13/8 favourite ahead of Bertolini (winner of the July Stakes) and Rosselli (Norfolk Stakes). After tracking the leaders, Mujahid struggled to obtain a clear run in the straight and finished fifth of the eight runners behind Josr Algarhoud, Sailing Shoes, Thunder Dragon and Bertolini. John Dunlop later said that thecolt had been unsuited by the firm ground. Despite his defeat at York, Mujahid was moved up in class and distance to contest Britain's most prestigious race for two-year-olds, the Group One Dewhurst Stakes over seven furlongs at Newmarket on 17 October.
On his racecourse debut, Holding Court finished sixth in a maiden race over seven furlongs on firm ground at Haydock Park Racecourse on 4 September. In his three remaining races of 1999 the colt was ridden by Frankie Dettori. On 30 September Holding Court started at odds of 12/1 for the Westley Maiden Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse and finished second of the fourteen runners, beaten a head by the favourite Qamous. Two weeks later, he started for a minor stakes race over heavy ground at Haydock and recorded his first win, leading from the start and beating Cover Up (later to win the Ascot Stakes, Queen Alexandra Stakes and Jockey Club Cup) by six lengths.
He finished third behind his fellow three-year-old Flash N Thunder and the seven-year-old gelding Gypsy Dancer, beaten three lengths by the winner. At Royal Ascot in June African Song was moved up to Group One level for the King's Stand Stakes run over five furlongs on good to firm ground. Ridden by Pat Eddery he started at odds of 10/1 in a fourteen-runner field. The best of his rivals appeared to be Abdu (runner-up in the William Hill Sprint Championship), Greenland Park (winner of the Queen Mary Stakes, Molecomb Stakes and Cornwallis Stakes), Runnett (later to win the Haydock Sprint Cup) and Abeer (Queen Mary Stakes, Flying Childers Stakes).
Compton Place began his second season in the Achilles Stakes over five furlongs at Kempton Park Racecourse on 31 May. He started joint-favourite and raced prominently but was beaten two and a half lengths into second place by the four-year-old Almaty. Three weeks later, the colt was sent to Royal Ascot to contest the King's Stand Stakes over five furlongs on good to soft ground. After leading in the early stages he faded badly in the final furlong and finished twelfth of the eighteen runners behind the French-trained outsider Don't Worry Me. On 10 July, Compton Place started a 50/1 outsider for the July Cup over six furlongs on firm ground at Newmarket Racecourse.
This may be a full-bench trail, where the treadway is only on the firm ground surface after the overlying soil is removed and sidecast (thrown to the side as waste), or a half-bench trail, where soil is removed and packed to the side so that the treadway is half on firm old ground and half on new packed fill. In areas near drainages, creeks and other waterways, excavation spoils are taken away in bulk and deposited in an environmentally benign area. In problem areas trails are established entirely on fill. In such cases the soil is packed down firmly and the site is periodically checked to maintain the stability of the trail.
At York, Shangamuzo was beaten two lengths by Smuggler when attempting to concede three pounds to his rival, but was widely expected to reverse the form at level weights over a longer distance at Sandown. In the Henry II Stakes, however, Shangamuzo appeared to be unsuited by the firm ground, and was beaten two and a half lengths. Shangamuzo, ridden by Starkey, started at odds of 13/2 for the Ascot Gold Cup over two and a half miles at Royal Ascot, with Buckskin starting favourite ahead of the filly Royal Hive (winner of the Park Hill Stakes). The other runners included Duky and Hawkberry who had finished second and third to Buckskin in the Prix du Cadran.
Matiya began her racing career in a maiden race over seven furlongs in an evening meeting at Newmarket Racecourse on 21 July in which she was ridden by Richard Hills and started the 2/1 favourite. After pulling hard in the early stages she took the lead inside the final furlong and won by a length from the Paul Cole-trained Sibbertoft. A month later she was brought back in distance for a minor stakes race on good to firm ground at Pontefract Racecourse and finished third of the four runners behind Defined Feature. At Haydock Park on 2 September she was matched against male opposition and moved up in distance for the St Annes Stakes over one mile.
The Japanese challenger was the three-year-old Sirius Symboli, winner of the Japanese Derby. Apart from Oh So Sharp, the best of the British-trained runners appeared to be the Coronation Cup winner Rainbow Quest (accompanied by his pacemaker August) and Petoski, who had recovered from a poor run in the Derby to win the Princess of Wales's Stakes and who was expected to be suited by the prevailing firm ground. The other runners were Crazy (Ebor Handicap), Raft (Prix de la Côte Normande) and Infantry (Dee Stakes). A notable absentee was the Derby winner Slip Anchor who had been an intended runner before he was ruled out with a leg injury.
As at Chester, he began to make rapid progress after being switched to the outside, catching the leader, The Great Gatsby inside the final furlong and winning by a length. The winning time of 2:33.35 was the third fastest recorded in a Derby at Epsom. After the race Michael Stoute praised Fallon's riding, before echoing Raymond's comments after the Dee Stakes by calling Kiris Kin "one of the laziest horses at home I've ever trained." A late withdrawal from the Irish Derby because of the unsuitably firm ground meant that Kris Kin had been off the course for more than seven weeks before his next start, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot.
Despite hanging to the left in the closing stages she won by two lengths from High and Low with Cloud Castle a further two lengths back in third. The racecourse stewards held an inquiry into possible interference between the winner and the runner-up but allowed the result to stand. Cecil said that the filly had hung towards the rail on account of the firm ground, whilst Fallon claimed that Darryll Holland on High and Low had exaggerated the level of interference. Less than after her win at York, it was announced that the filly had sustained a hairline fracture of the knee in the race and that her racing career was over.
On his first appearance as a three-year-old, Lanfranco started 10/1 third favourite for the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on 4 May but looked completely outpaced and finished seventh of the fourteen runners behind Shadeed. Later that month he was moved up to one and a half miles for the Predominate Stakes at Goodwood Racecourse. He started favourite and won easily by three lengths from Phardante. In the 206th running of the Epsom Derby on 5 June Lanfranco started at odds of 14/1 in a fourteen-runner field: Henry Cecil had doubts about running the colt as he felt that the prevailing firm ground would be to his disadvantage.
As in his previous season, the experience of racing on firm ground resulted in injury, with Lanfranco suffering a "jarred shoulder" which kept him off the course for two months. On his final appearance Lanfranco contested the St Leger Stakes over fourteen and a half furlongs at Doncaster on 14 September. He started the 85/40 second favourite behind his stable companion Oh So Sharp, a filly who was bidding for a Triple Crown after winning the 1000 Guineas and the Oaks Stakes. Ridden by Piggott he led for most way without being able to break away from his five opponents, before being overtaken by Oh So Sharp three furlongs from the finish.
Racing on firm ground, Akiyda never looked likely to win, but stayed on in the straight to finish second, two lengths behind the winner All Along, with Harbour, Zalataia and the Yorkshire Oaks winner Awaasif unplaced. By the time that the Arc was run over the same course and distance three weeks later the weather had changed and the ground was very soft. The Irish-trained Assert started favourite ahead of Bon Sang (winner of the Prix Niel), Ardross, Harbour and Bikala with Akiyda next in the betting on 11/1. Bikala and Bon Sang set a very strong pace as they disputed the lead for most of the way, with Yves Saint-Martin settling Akiyda close behind.
On 19 June on good to firm ground at Royal Ascot Accidental Agent went off at odds of 33/1 for the Queen Anne Stakes. Benbatl started favourite, while the other thirteen runners included Rhododendron, Century Dream, Lord Glitters, Lightning Spear, Limato, Recoletos (Prix d'Ispahan), Yoshida (Turf Classic Stakes), Deauville (Belmont Derby) and Suedois (Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes). After racing towards the rear as Deauville set the pace, Accidental Agent began to make progress in the last quarter mile and joined the leaders in the final furlong. He gained the advantage in the closing stages and won by half a length from Lord Glitters with Lightning Spear, Century Dream, Yoshida and Beat The Bank finishing close behind.
Deep Roots reversed the form with Ma Biche to win the Prix Morny on firm ground at Deauville Racecourse in August and went on to win the Prix de la Salamandre. On her final appearance of the season, Ma Biche was sent to England to contest the Group One Cheveley Park stakes over six furlongs at Newmarket Racecourse in October. She started the 11/4 favourite and won the race, defeating the British filly Favoridge by three quarters of a length to end the season as the highest-rated filly of her generation in Europe. At the end of the year she was sold for a reported £3 million to Maktoum Al Maktoum.
On 14 July Knight's Baroness was sent to Ireland and started the 13/8 favourite for the Irish Oaks over one and a half miles on good-to-firm ground at the Curragh. The best fancied of her nine opponents were Pharian (winner of the Cheshire Oaks and Lancashire Oaks), the Italian challenger Atoll (Premio Regina Elena, Oaks d'Italia) and the Dermot Weld- trained Crockadore. The 50/1 outsider Assertion set the pace from Atoll with Quinn settling the favourite just behind the leaders. Atoll went to the front in the straight but Knight's Baroness produced a sustained run to wear down the Italian filly, took the lead in the final strides and won by a neck.
Hern was never able to explain the incident and said that nothing similar happened to the filly before or after. Twelve days after her run at Epsom the filly was sent to Ireland to contest the Irish Oaks on good to firm ground at the Curragh and started the 4/1 second favourite behind the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Prince's Polly in a ten-runner field. The other fancied contenders were Santa Roseanna (winner of the Minstrel Stakes), Rosananti (Premio Regina Elena), Cooliney Princess and More Heather (C L Weld Park Stakes). With Carson in the saddle, Swiftfoot took the lead from the start and extended her advantage early in the straight.
Turtle Island began his second season at Newbury on 16 April, when he started 2/1 favourite for the Greenham Stakes, a trial race for the 2000 Guineas. The colt pulled hard when Reid attempted to restrain him in the early stages before taking the lead in the final quarter mile and accelerating clear of the field to win in "impressive" style by eight lengths from Luhuk. Turtle Island bypassed the 2000 Guineas, which was run on firm ground, and instead contested the Poule d'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp Racecourse on 8 May. He was held up in the early stages and was last of the eight runners on the final turn.
On 18 September she made her second appearance in the Blandford Stakes and started 15/8 favourite ahead of the Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Chelsea Rose and nine other fillies and mares. Racing on her favoured firm ground, she was positioned in third by Kieren Fallon before moving up to take the lead a quarter mile from the finish. Red Bloom opened up a clear advantage and stayed on in the closing stages to win by one and a half lengths and a length from Pictavia and Kinnaird. On her final appearance of the season she finished sixth of the nine runners behind Kinnaird in the Prix de l'Opéra at Longchamp Racecourse in October.
The earliest fleeting reference to square roots of negative numbers occurred in the work of the mathematician and inventor Heron of Alexandria in the , when he considered the volume of an impossible frustum of a pyramid. They became more prominent when in the 16th century closed formulas for the roots of third and fourth degree polynomials were discovered by Italian mathematicians such as Niccolò Fontana Tartaglia and Gerolamo Cardano. It was soon realized that these formulas, even if one was only interested in real solutions, sometimes required the manipulation of square roots of negative numbers. This was doubly unsettling since they did not even consider negative numbers to be on firm ground at the time.
The charge required a high degree of commitment as the men were rushing into musket range and would suffer casualties from at least one volley. Speed was essential, so the Highlanders preferred to employ the charge downhill and over firm ground; they removed clothing from their lower body for the same reason. They ran forward in clusters of a dozen (often blood relatives) which formed a larger wedge shaped formation. Once in effective musket range (60 yards) those with firearms would shoot; gun-smoke from this mass discharge having obscured enemies' aim, the Highlanders obtained further protection from the expected return volley from the opposing force by crouching low to the ground immediately after firing.
King Persian made his racecourse debut in a maiden race over six furlongs of firm ground at Gowran Park in July and won easily. In the following month he was stepped up in class and started at odds of 8/1 in a thirteen-runner field for the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes over six furlongs at Phoenix Park Racecourse. The favourite for the race was Gala Event, a filly who was unbeaten in two previous starts, but the rest of the field was undistinguished by Group 1 standards. Ridden by Michael Kinane, King Persian stumbled exiting the starting stalls and settled towards the rear of the field as Gala Event set a very fast pace.
The remains of Tollund Man shortly after his discovery On 6 May 1950, peat cutters (Viggo and Emil Hojgaard) in the Bjældskovdal peat bog, west of Silkeborg, Denmark discovered a corpse in the peat layer which appeared so fresh that they at first believed they had discovered a recent murder victim. The Tollund Man lay away from firm ground, buried under of peat, his body arranged in a fetal position. He wore a pointed skin cap of sheepskin and wool, fastened under his chin by a hide thong, and a smooth hide belt around his waist. Additionally, a noose made of plaited animal hide was drawn tight around his neck and trailed down his back.
Tarantella was rested during the summer when the firm ground made her difficult to train, before returning in early September to run twice without success in a meeting at Warwick Racecourse. On the opening day of the meeting she ran in the Guy Produce Stakes over one mile and finished unplaced behind a colt named Trepidation. Two days later she ran in a King's Plate, a race run in a series of two mile heats, with the prize going to the first horse to win twice. She finished third to the five-year-old mare Diana in the first heat but was then withdrawn from the second, in which Diana completed her victory.
Leading Light was made the odds-on favourite whilst the other contenders included Royal Diamond, Encke, Pale Mimosa (Lonsdale Cup) Willing Foe (Aston Park Stakes) and Pallasator. Racing on good to firm ground Brown Panther settled in second place behind Leading Light's pacemaker Eye of the Storm as the pair drew many lengths clear of the field. He took the lead two furlongs out and quickly went clear, winning easily by six and a half lengths from Leading Light, with Encke a head away in third. There was some criticism of the other jockeys in the race, who were seen as having allowed Brown Panther to get too far ahead before the race began in earnest.
Idaho made his racecourse debut in a maiden race over one mile on good-to-firm ground at the Curragh Racecourse on 13 October in which he was ridden by Joseph O'Brien and started at odds of 4/1 in an eleven-runner field. The colt took the lead approaching the final furlong and drew away to win "easily" by three and a half lengths. The colt was then moved up sharply in class for the Group One Critérium de Saint-Cloud over 2000 metres on 1 November. Ridden by Ryan Moore he started the 6/4 favourite but finished fourth of the ten runners, almost six lengths behind the winner Robin of Navan.
On 5 July 2009 Apapane made her first appearance in a contest for previously unraced two-year-olds over 1800 metres at Fukushima Racecourse and finished thord of the sixteen runners behind the colt Lordship. The filly was then off the course for three and a half months before recording her first victory in a maiden race over 1600 metres at Tokyo Racecourse. Two weeks later she won the Akamatsu Sho over the same course and distance in a record time of 1.34.5. On 13 December the filly was stepped up in class to contest the Grade I Hanshin Juvenile Fillies, Japan's most prestigious race for two-year-old fillies over 1600 metres on firm ground at Hanshin Racecourse.
He was among the leaders from the start and drew clear in the closing stages to win by two and a half lengths from Seismic Wave and Eastern Mystic. On 19 June Longboat was made the even money favourite against ten opponents in the Ascot Gold Cup. Racing on his favoured firm ground, he took the lead half a mile from the finish and was never challenged, winning by five lengths from Eastern Mystic, who beat Spicy Story by a head for second place. Timeform were of the opinion that the field had been an unusually poor one, but praised the winner's "game and genuine" performance and admitted that he won in "tremendous style".
Sea Moon began his 2012 campaign in the Listed Southern Daily Echo Tapster Stakes on firm ground at Goodwood on 26 May. Starting the 2/7 favourite and held of the sustained challenge of Dandino to win by a head. In the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot four weeks later, he was made 2/1 favourite against a field which included the Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden. Racing on soft ground for the first time since his win in the Great Voltigeur, Sea Moon took the lead two furlongs from the finish and accelerated clear of the field to win by three and a quarter lengths from Dunaden, with Red Cadeaux in third.
Sikeston made his racecourse debut in a maiden race over seven furlongs on good to firm ground at Newmarket Racecourse in which he started at odds of 16/1 and finished second, beaten two lengths by the Henry Cecil-trained Samoan. The colt ran second when odds-on favourite for a minor race at York Racecourse in July and then finished third at Chepstow in September. On his final run of the season Sikeston made his first appearance in Italy when he contested the Group 1 Gran Criterium over 1600 metres on soft ground at San Siro Racecourse in Milan. Ridden by Gianfranco Dettori he won by eight lengths from Lacbell and Star Shareef (also trained by Dunlop).
Priory Belle made her first racecourse appearance in a minor race run over six furlongs on firm ground at Fairyhouse on 9 August. Starting at odds of 3/1 in a five-runner field she won by three quarters of a length from the Aidan O'Brien-trained Cashel Princess. Seventeen days after her win at Fairyhouse the filly was stepped up in class and distance for the Listed Debutante Stakes over seven furlongs at Leopardstown Racecourse and finished second of the eight runners, beaten one and a half lengths by the Dermot Weld-trained Dance Design. Pat Gilson took the ride when Priory Belle moved up into Group 1 class and started a 16/1 outsider for the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh.
Thus, Boolean logic is sometimes used to denote propositional calculus performed in this way. Boolean algebra is not sufficient to capture logic formulas using quantifiers, like those from first order logic. Although the development of mathematical logic did not follow Boole's program, the connection between his algebra and logic was later put on firm ground in the setting of algebraic logic, which also studies the algebraic systems of many other logics. The problem of determining whether the variables of a given Boolean (propositional) formula can be assigned in such a way as to make the formula evaluate to true is called the Boolean satisfiability problem (SAT), and is of importance to theoretical computer science, being the first problem shown to be NP-complete.
She did not win as a three- year-old but ran some excellent races in defeat. On 4 May 2003 she ran – despite an interrupted preparation – in the first fillies-only Classic race of the season, the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket. Ridden again by Oscar Urbina on good to firm ground, she travelled strongly in the race, being held up, she came through 2 furlongs out before her effort flattened out up the hill and she could not find any extra inside the final furlong. She was beaten into fourth place by the eventual winner Russian Rhythm, with the future Breeders' Cup Mile winner Six Perfections in second place together with the future Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Intercontinental back in third place.
On his final start of the year, Somnus was sent to Redcar in October for the eighteen-runner Betabet Two-Year-Old Trophy and was allowed to take his chance in the race despite the unsuitably firm ground. He raced prominently before taking the lead two furlongs out and stayed on "gamely" under pressure to win by a head from Tout Seul, with Monsieur Bond third. The win made Somnus one of the year's biggest money earners and after the race, Lady Legard said that she felt "so lucky to have such a good horse and such a tough one." The form of the race was significantly boosted two weeks later when Tout Seul won the Group One Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.
The German language contains a complex system of inflection that is capable of frustrating learners in a manner similar to Twain's argument:Schmid 2002 p. 85 > Surely there is not another language that is so slipshod and systemless, and > so slippery and elusive to the grasp. One is washed about in it, hither and > thither, in the most helpless way; and when at last he thinks he has > captured a rule which offers firm ground to take a rest on amid the general > rage and turmoil of the ten parts of speech, he turns over the page and > reads, "Let the pupil make careful note of the following exceptions." He > runs his eye down and finds that there are more exceptions to the rule than > instances of it.
Immediately afterwards, his connections expressed no worries about the Derby distance, although some concern was expressed about the possibility of firm ground, which was felt to be unsuitable for such a big, heavily built horse. Dubai Millennium was reported to have thrived after Goodwood and was sent to Epsom for the Derby, where he was made favourite, although his starting price of 5/1 reflected the open nature of a race in which many lightly raced, untested colts were entered. He pulled hard early on, and after making a brief effort early in the straight, finished ninth of the sixteen runners, beaten just over nine lengths by Oath. It was his only defeat and the only time he was tried over the mile and a half distance.
Elm Park was initially aimed at the 2000 Guineas but was withdrawn from the race as Balding felt that he would have been unsuited by the prevailing firm ground. On his first appearance as a three-year-old, Elm Park contested the Group Two Dante Stakes at York Racecourse, a major trial for the 2015 Epsom Derby which attracted a strong field. The colt started 7/2 second favourite behind Jack Hobbs, with the other contenders including John F Kennedy, Nafaqa, Golden Horn (winner of the Feilden Stakes) and Ol' Man River (Beresford Stakes). Elm Park took the lead three furlongs from the finish but was overtaken in the final furlong and finished third behind Golden Horn and Jack Hobbs.
She was then dropped in class for a race at Kempton Park Racecourse, but appeared to struggle on the prevailing soft ground and finished fourth of the six runners behind Nasseem. In June, Tolmi faced Nasseem on firm ground in the Coronation Stakes, which was then a Group Two race, at Royal Ascot and started at odds of 4/1. She was always well-placed, and after being switched to the outside in the straight to obtain a clear run she accelerated into the lead and won by half a length from the Irish filly Happy Bride, with Nasseem in third place. In the Child Stakes at Newmarket in July, Tolmi was beaten three lengths when attempting to concede six pounds to Robert Sangster's filly Star Pastures.
After racing at the rear of the field in the early stages, Connaught Bridge moved forward in the straight and engaged in a protracted struggle with Reproclor before drawing away in the final furlong. She won by three lengths from Senorita Poquito who overtook the weakening Reprocolor in the closing stages. Following her win at York, Connaught Bridge was sold privately to the breeder Peter Harris. On her only subsequent appearance, Connaught Bridge was brought back in distance for the Twickenham Stakes over ten furlongs on firm ground at Kempton Park Racecourse in September in which she was required to concede weight to opponents including Britannia's Rule, the Epsom Oaks runner-up Bonnie Isle and the Musidora Stakes winner Rimosa's Pet.
Oh So Sharp began her three-year-old season on 18 April in the seven furlong Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse in which she met Helen Street at level weights and was ridden for the first time by Cauthen. She won at odds of 8/13, beating Bella Colora by a length, with Helen Street two and a half lengths back in third. Two weeks later, Oh So Sharp was one of seventeen fillies to contest the 1000 Guineas over Newmarket's Rowley Mile course. Racing on unusually firm ground, Oh So Sharp was not among the early leaders and appeared to be struggling in the final quarter mile when the race seemed to lie between Bella Colora and Al Bahathri.
89 Chamberlain explained his work in promoting the Wagner cult as an effort to cure modern society of its spiritual ills that he claimed were caused by capitalism, industrialisation, materialism, and urbanisation. Chamberlain wrote about modern society in the 1890s: > Like a wheel that spins faster and faster, the increasing rush of life > drives us continually further apart from each other, continually further > from the 'firm ground of nature'; soon it must fling us out into empty > nothingness.Field (1981), p.150 In another letter, Chamberlain stated: > If we do not soon pay attention to Schiller's thought regarding the > transformation from the state of Need into the Aesthetic State, then our > condition will degenerate into a boundless chaos of empty talk and arms > foundries.
Jünger, 68Jünger, 69 The suicide of his comrade Lorenz, who refused to adapt to the vertiginous pace of technological, social change, figures prominently in his reflection; for Richard, Lorenz's death exemplifies the fate of those who cannot "find firm ground under [their] feet in the present".Jünger, 64 Richard's ruminations then turn inward, as he narrates his own lack of worldly success and his negative evaluations by superiors as an "outsider with defeatist inclinations."Jünger, 79 When the elderly Zapparoni finally makes his entrance, Richard senses his latent power, remarking that there is more to him than his intelligence.Jünger, 83–6 In a narrative aside prompted by a question from Zapparoni, Richard contrasts his former comrades Fillmor, Lorenz, and Twinnings.
Cloonagh made little impact on her three-year-old debut when she finished sixth behind Caspian in the Nell Gwyn Stakes over seven furlongs on good to firm ground at Newmarket Racecourse in April. The ground was much softer when the filly was moved up in distance for the Pretty Polly Stakes over ten furlongs at the same track on 5 May. She recorded her first significant success as she won by half a length from Isteia (later to win the Lancashire Oaks) with Guest Night in third. The field for the Irish 1000 Guineas over one mile at the Curragh on 19 May was not particularly strong: Timeform described the race as the weakest of any classic race run in Britain, France or Ireland that year.
Ultimately, the Germans learned of the French intentions so that strategic surprise was lost, allowing them to reinforce the threatened front sectors; nor was there a tactical surprise, as it had become known that French tanks existed and were about to be introduced. Three AS first assembled at the frontline near Beuvraignes in late March 1917, hoping to exploit a possible success in an offensive by the Third Army, that however had to be cancelled because of the strategic German retreat to the Hindenburg Line.Dutil, p. 38 Eventually, the tank units were to support the attack by the Fifth Army at the Aisne and were concentrated in a nine kilometres wide sector south of Juvincourt-et-Damary, chosen for its firm ground.
Before his racecourse debut Limato was gelded and transferred to the table of the veteran Henry Candy at Kingston Warren in Oxfordshire. Limato made his first appearance on 11 June on the synthetic track at Kempton Park Racecourse when he contested a six furlong maiden race and won "comfortably" by two and a half lengths from the Charlie Appleby-trained favourite Hawkesbury. Two weeks later the gelding started 4/6 favourite for a race over the same course and distance and won "easily" from five opponents after taking the lead a furlong out. On 18 July Limato was moved up in class and tried on turf for the first time when he ran in the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes on good-to-firm ground at Newbury Racecourse.
In the early spring of 2017 Limato was set to race in Dubai and he meade his seasonal debut in the Al Quoz Sprint over 1200 metres at Meydan Racecourse on 25 March. Ridden by Bentley he started second favourite behind the locally trained Ertiaal but was never in contention and came home tenth of the twelve runners. Despite his poor effort in Dubai, Limato was made the 2/1 favourite in a nineteen-runner field for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on 24 June. Racing on his favoured firm ground, the gelding came from off the pace to deliver a strong late challenge but was hampered in the closing stages and finished third behind The Tin Man and Tasleet.
Bachelor Duke began his second season in the 2000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile course at Newmarket on 1 May. Starting at odds of 20/1 in a fourteen-runner field he raced closer to the lead than previously but was unable to quicken in the last quarter mile and cam home seventh, beaten six lengths by Haafhd, who won from Snow Ridge, Azamour and Grey Swallow. Following the death of the Duke of Devonshire on 3 May the ownership of Bachelor Duke passed to the executors of his late owner's estate. Three weeks after his defeat at Newmarket the colt was sent to Ireland for the Irish 2000 Guineas over one mile on good to firm ground at the Curragh.
To put the above informal discussion of braid groups on firm ground, one needs to use the homotopy concept of algebraic topology, defining braid groups as fundamental groups of a configuration space. Alternatively, one can define the braid group purely algebraically via the braid relations, keeping the pictures in mind only to guide the intuition. To explain how to reduce a braid group in the sense of Artin to a fundamental group, we consider a connected manifold X of dimension at least 2. The symmetric product of n copies of X means the quotient of X^n, the n-fold Cartesian product of X by the permutation action of the symmetric group on n strands operating on the indices of coordinates.
Motivator began his racing career in August 2004 when he contested an eleven-runner maiden race at Newmarket He made an immediate impact with what the Racing Post described as a "scintillating" performance. Ridden by Kieren Fallon, he took the lead a furlong from the finish and pulled away to win by six lengths. After the race, his trainer demonstrated his confidence by naming the Group Two Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot as the colt's most likely next race. Motivator was ruled out of the Ascot race because of the unsuitably firm ground, which meant that he had been off the racecourse for more than two months before being stepped up markedly in class to contest the Group One Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster.
Jamie Spencer took over as Kyllachy's jockey in 2002 and rode him in all five of his races. The colt began his third season in a handicap at Newbury Racecourse in April and won by one and three quarter lengths after accelerating into the lead inside the final furlong. On 4 May, Kyllachy was moved up to Group Three class for the first time and started the 2/1 favourite for the Palace House Stakes over five furlongs on good to firm ground at Newmarket. His main rivals in the betting were Continent, Smokin Beau (winner of the Portland Handicap) and Speed Lord (Field Marshal Stakes), whilst the other runners included Jessica's Dream (Ballyogan Stakes), The Trader (World Trophy) and Bahamian Pirate.
Llandaff Castle, 1823. Most of the history of Llandaff centres on its role as a religious site. Before the creation of Llandaff Cathedral, it became established as a Christian place of worship in the 6th century AD, probably because of its location as the first firm ground north of the point where the river Taff met the Bristol Channel, and because of its pre-Christian location as a river crossing on a north–south trade route. Evidence of Romano-British ritual burials have been found under the present cathedral. The date of the moving of the cathedral to Llandaff is disputed, but elements of the fabric date from the 12th century, such as the impressive Romanesque Urban Arch, named after the 12th century Bishop, Urban.
On 7 October 2002 at Pontefract Racecourse, Zee Zee Top made her track debut in a maiden race over one mile on firm ground and started the 4/6 favourite in a six-runner field. Ridden by Kieren Fallon she took the lead approaching the final furlong and quickly drew away from her opponents to win by seven lengths. Fallon was again in the saddle ten days later when the filly was stepped up in class for the Listed Severals Stakes on softer ground at Newmarket Racecourse and was matched against older fillies and mares. Starting at 12/1 she was restrained in the early stages before making steady progress to take second place, two lengths behind the four-year-old Salim Toto.
After being off the racecourse for fifteen months, Martha's Son returned in the two-mile Emblem Chase at Kempton Park on 22 February 1997. Ridden by Norman Williamson, he had little opportunity to show his wellbeing as he fell at the second fence of a race won by Viking Flagship. In order to prepare the horse for his next run he was taken to Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse for a schooling session but his participation in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham was in doubt until the last moment owing to the firm ground. On 12 March 1997, Martha's Son made his first and only appearance at the Cheltenham Festival when he was one of six horses to contest the thirty-ninth running of the Champion Chase.
" Christ Stack of Dancing Astronaut described the song's progression as a "rhythmic rendition with metallic high hats in place, life and death seem to coincide with each other." Nest HQ's Cassie Sheets wrote that "Spider on the Moon" demonstrated Rezz's "natural intuition on the equal importance of the absence of sound", describing the song as a "dichotomy between the robust, sub-bass characteristics and the rich, glistening melodic intonations." Writing for Dancing Astronaut, Christ Stack noted the songs prominent theme of outer space, writing "Rezz's varied, clicking synths and grounded bass sounds like a giant spider on firm ground." Writing for EDM Identity, Jayce Ullah-Blocks described "Teleportal" as reminiscent of 1788-L's style, writing "The electrifying bass rips are back, broken up by stippling silence blurbs.
O'Brien felt that the colt would have been unsuited by the good-to-firm ground at Doncaster and would be more at home on softer surface at the Curragh. Ridden by Joseph O'Brien he was the only three-year-old in the field but started the 5/4 favourite ahead of ten older stayers. His rivals included Forgotten Rules, Brown Panther, Agent Murphy (Geoffrey Freer Stakes), Second Step (Grosser Preis von Berlin), Sea Moon, Kingfisher, Wicklow Brave (County Hurdle), Gospel Choir (Yorkshire Cup) and Vent de Force (Henry II Stakes). After being restrained towards the rear of the field, the favourite moved into contention with half a mile left to run and went to the front soon after turning into the straight.
At Royal Ascot in June Markab was dropped back in distance to five furlongs for the first time in his career when he contested the King's Stand Stakes. Starting at odds of 14/1 he started well and tracked the leaders before moving up to challenge in the final furlong and finished second of the twelve runners behind the five- year-old Equiano. In the Hackwood Stakes at Newbury in July he started favourite but after leading for most of the way he faded in the closing stages and finished sixth behind Regal Parade. On 4 September Markab was one of thirteen horses to contest the Group One Betfred Sprint Cup over six furlongs on good-to-firm ground at Haydock Park and started at odds of 12/1.
On her three-year-old debut Priory Belle ran on ground softer than she had previously encountered when she contested the Athasi Stakes at the Curragh on 27 April and came home fifth of the seven finishers behind Proud Titania. Four weeks later in the Irish 1000 Guineas she was sent off at odds of 25/1 in a twelve-runner field and although she never looked likely to win but stayed on well in the straight to finish fifth behind Matiya. In une she was sent to England for the Coronation Stakes in which she was able to run on firm ground for the first time as a three-year-old. Starting a 16/1 outsider she finished last of the seven runners behind the French-trained Shake The Yoke.
When asked to compare the filly to her stablemate Millisle she added "They've never worked together, but this filly has showed she stays a mile, so she looks more like a classic filly". On her final run of 2019 Albigna was sent to California for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on firm ground at Santa Anita Park on 1 November. She was restrained at the rear of the field before making steady progress in the last quarter mile but was never able to challenge the leaders and came home fourth behind Sharing, Daahyeh and Sweet Melania. In the official rating of European two-year-olds for 2019 Albigna was rated the second-best filly of the year, one pound behind Millisle and level with Quadrilateral and Raffle Prize.
Racing on firm ground at Royal Ascot, Pipalong made little impact in the Cork and Orrery Stakes, finishing unplaced behind Superior Premium. In the Group One July Cup on good-to-soft ground at Newmarket she produced a much better performance as she was narrowly beaten in a three-way photo finish by the Japanese colt Agnes World and the three-year- old Lincoln Dancer with Primo Valentino and Lend A Hand in fourth and fifth. Pipalong produced another good effort in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York in August when she finished third behind Nuclear Debate and Bertolini. The six- furlong Stanley Leisure Sprint Cup at Haydock on 6 September saw Pipalong start the 3/1 second favourite behind Lincoln Dancer for a race run on heavy ground.
On his first appearance as a three-year-old contested the Craven Stakes (a major trial for the 2000 Guineas) on firm going at Newmarket Racecourse in April and finished fifth behind My Drifter. He sustained a shoulder injury in the race and was never again asked to run on firm ground. His participation in the 2000 Guineas on 5 May was in doubt until overnight rain softened the track but he produced a very good effort to finish third of the eighteen runners behind Mon Fils and Noble Decree with Thatch in fourth place. In the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh two weeks later Sharp Edge was ridden by Joe Mercer, and started 5/2 joint-favourite alongside Dapper, the Vincent O'Brien-trained winner of both the Tetrarch Stakes and the Gladness Stakes.
For the remainder of 1989, Petite Ile was campaigned exclusively in Group One races, starting with the Irish Oaks at the Curragh in July. Starting at 14/1 in a five-runner field she made steady progress in the straight to finish third behind Alydaress and The Oaks winner Aliysa, beaten less than a length. In August she was sent to England for the Yorkshire Oaks but looked somewhat outpaced on the good to firm ground and finished third for the fourth time in five races as she came home a length and a half and a head behind Roseate Tern and Alydaress. The ground was much softer when Petite Ile took on nine opponents in the Irish St Leger over fourteen furlong at the Curragh on 23 September.
Two weeks later he was assigned a weight of 128 pounds in six furlong handicap race at Newmarket Racecourse and ran second to his old rival Dazzling Dan beaten half a length after finishing strongly. At Doncaster racecourse on 14 September Oxted started at odds of 14/1 in a twenty-two runner field for the Portland Handicap over five and a half furlongs on good to firm ground. He was assigned a weight of 133 pounds but carried three pounds less as he was ridden by the apprentice jockey Cieren Fallon. He raced just behind the leaders down the centre of the course, went to the front inside the final furlong and won by half a length from the six-year-old gelding A Momentofmadness (winner of the race in 2018).
Wolbe opposed hitting children; this, in light of the weakening generations in understanding the biblical verse (Proverbs 13:24) advising "spare the rod spoil the child." Known for being a lifelong reader of many disciplines such as secular psychology and educational theory, Wolbe created his own educational philosophy for the greater community. In his important work on education Zeriah u'Binyan beChinnuch ("Planting and Building in Education") he presents an adaptation and paraphrase of John Dewey's Democracy and Education (1916), in which Dewey presented the tension of rote learning and a democratic individualism. For Wolbe, the educator needs to "build" the students on the firm ground of Torah, the community, and Haredi yeshiva values, yet at the same time allow the students to "grow," each in their own personal and individual way.
On 26 May, with Hamanaka again in the saddle, Roger Barows was made a 92/1 outsider for the 86th running of the Tokyo Yushun over 2400 metres on firm ground at Tokyo Racecourse. His stablemate Saturnalia started odds-on favourite while the other sixteen runners his old rivals included Admire Justa, Emeral Flight and Red Genial as well as Velox (runner-up in the Satsuki Sho), Danon Kingly (Tokinominoru Kinen), Lion Lion (Aoba Sho), Courageux Guerrier (Kyoto Nisai Stakes) Meisho Tengen (Yayoi Sho) and Nishino Daisy (Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai Stakes). In front of a 110,000 crowd Lion Lion started quickly and set a very fast pace, opening up a clear lead from Roger Barows who was in turn clear of the rest for most of the way.
Papal Bull was well beaten on his first two starts as a four-year-old finishing fourth to Sixties Icon in the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket on 6 May and then running fifth behind Take A Bow in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown Park later that month. Ryan Moore took the ride when the colt started at odds of 11/1 for the Group 2 Princess of Wales's Stakes over one and a half miles on good to firm ground at Newmarket on 12 July. Sixties Icon started favourite while the other ten runners included Lucarno and Laverock (Prix d'Ispahan). After being restrained by Moore in the early stages he began to make progress approaching the final quarter mile and took the lead a furlong out.
Thurmond would serve for more than thirty-six years as a GOP senator plus his twelve earlier years as a Democrat. In the campaign, Workman said: > It is the Republican Party which offers the best hope, and perhaps the last > hope, of stemming the liberal tide which has been sweeping the United States > toward the murky depths of socialism. ... We must stop floating along the > stream of least resistance and get our feet back down on the firm ground of > sound, conservative, responsible government. Workman finished with 133,390 votes (42.8 percent); Johnston, 178,712 (57.2 percent).Congressional Quarterly's Guide to U.S. Elections, U.S. Senate, 1962 In the same 1962 election, James D. Martin of Alabama made an even stronger showing than did Workman in Martin's bid to unseat another entrenched Democratic senator, Lister Hill.
A large hill fort (Ad Taum) abuts the village at the northwest, and the village church is built within it. This may be a remnant of the Danish invasion of the ninth century. Tasburgh church is a traditional Norfolk Saxon church of flint with a round tower. The first human beings to leave their mark on Tasburgh were fur clad Mesolithic hunter bands some time between 8500 BC and 4500 BC. Between what is now Low Road and the River Tas, behind both the old Horseshoes public house and the nearby garage workshop, a scatter of fine flint flakes has revealed where hunters trimmed their spear and arrow heads at a site where firm ground came close to the river by a ford which is still marked on maps.
In the 2000, after Jharkhand separated from Bihar, realization struck that schools which were established to provide a firm ground to meritorious students like the Indira Gandhi Residential School, Hazaribagh for girls, and Bihar's pride the Netarhat Residential School had both gone to Jharkhand. Since that time, an urgent need was felt to establish schools which would eliminate the vacuum created by their loss. On 12 August 2009 some alumni of Netarhat, on the initiative and invitation of the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, came forward to help the state government by adopting roles suitable for them on the basis of their experience at Netarhat. Taking into consideration the need of the present circumstances it was accepted by general consensus that the medium of instruction would be English.
On his 2018 debut Blast Onepiece was stepped up in distance for a minor event over 2400 metres at Tokyo on 4 February and came home three and a half lengths clear of his thirteen opponents. The colt was ridden in all of his subsequent races that year by Kenichi Ikezoe. On 24 March Blast Onepiece was stepped up in class for the Grade 3 Mainichi Hai at Hanshin Racecourse and started the 1.5/1 favourite in a field of ten. Racing on firm ground over 1800 metres he won by two lengths and a neck from Gibeon and Indy Champ. The Grade 1 Tokyo Yushun over 2400 metres at Tokyo on 27 May saw the colt start the 3.6/1 second choice in the betting behind Danon Premium in an eighteen-runner-field.
Hours After began his second season in the Prix Hocquart (a major trial race for the Prix du Jockey Club), run over 2400 metres on firm ground at Longchamp Racecourse on 8 May. Ridden for the first time by the Irish jockey Pat Eddery he finished seventh, more than fourteen lengths behind the winner Nasr El Erab. On 4 June at Chantilly Racecourse, Hours After was one of sixteen colts to contest the 151st running of the Prix du Jockey Club over 2400 metres. Lyric of Light made her third and final appearance of the season in the Group One Fillies' Mile on good to firm ground at Newmarket on 23 September. With Dettori again in the saddle she was made the 2/1 favourite with Fallen For You and the Roger Varian-trained Firdaws joint-second choices on 3/1 and Samitar being the best-fancied of the other five runners. Samitar went to the front from the tart with Lyric of Light, as at Doncaster, being held up at the back of the field before beginning to make ground just after half way. The favourite moved alongside Samitar a furlong out and the pair drew away from the opposition, with Lyric of Light gaining the advantage in the final strides to win by a head.
In a blanket finish, American Post took the lead 50 metres out and prevailed by half a length from Diamond Green with Byron, Ershaad and Antonius Pius just behind. Criquette Head-Maarek admitted that her colt had been a lucky winner saying "I was disappointed because he would have been second and he was beat" and expressing the view that American Post had been unsuited by the firm ground. For his next race, American Post was stepped up in distance for the 225th running of the Epsom Derby over one and a half miles at Epsom Downs Racecourse on 5 June. Ridden by Hughes was made the 13/2 third choice in a fourteen-runner field behind the Dante Stakes winner North Light and the 2000 Guineas runner-up Snow Ridge.
String theory predicts a large number of possible universes, called the "backgrounds" or "vacua". The set of these vacua is often called the "multiverse" or "anthropic landscape" or "string landscape". Leonard Susskind has argued that the existence of a large number of vacua puts anthropic reasoning on firm ground: only universes whose properties are such as to allow observers to exist are observed, while a possibly much larger set of universes lacking such properties go unnoticed. Steven Weinberg believes the Anthropic Principle may be appropriated by cosmologists committed to nontheism, and refers to that Principle as a "turning point" in modern science because applying it to the string landscape "may explain how the constants of nature that we observe can take values suitable for life without being fine-tuned by a benevolent creator".
Nahrain did not race as a juvenile, owing to an injury sustained in July 2010, and made her racecourse debut in a maiden race over one mile on good to firm ground at Windsor Racecourse on 16 May. Ridden by Neil Callan she started at odds of 11/2 and won by a length from Paoletta after taking the lead approaching the final furlong. William Buick took the ride when the filly started 8/15 favourite for a handicap race over the same distance at Haydock Park on 9 June and won "very easily" by five lengths under a weight of 131 pounds. At Sandown Park on 2 July Nahrain was stepped up in class and, with Callan in the saddle, started 4/6 favourite in a six-runner field for the Listed Coral Distaff.
Lauda Sion made a successful racecourse debut at Hanshin Racecourse on 22 June when he won an event for previously unraced juveniles over 1200 metres of firm ground. After an absence of over two months he returned to the track and was stepped up in class to contest the Grade 3 Kokura Nisai Stakes over 1200 metres at Kokura Racecourse and started at odds of 7.5/1 in a fourteen-runner field. Ridden by Yutaka Take he finished third behind Meiner Grit and Triple Ace, beaten a neck and half a length. On 12 October over 1400 metres on heavy ground at Kyoto Racecourse the colt was ridden by Christophe Lemaire when he started favourite for the Momiji Stakes and won by one and a half lengths from Lotus Land.
Rainbow Line's trainer Hidekazu Asami Two weeks after his last start of 2015, Rainbow Line began his second campaign in the Shinzan Kinen at Kyoto and finished sixth of the eighteen runners behind Logi Cry. On 27 February at Hanshin the colt contested the Grade 3 Arlington Cup over 1600 metres on firm ground and started the 5.8/1 fourth choice in the betting behind Urban Kid, Ball Lightning (Keio Hai Nisai Stakes) and Hiruno Magellan. Ridden by Mirco Demuro he raced towards the rear of the field before moving up on the wide outside on the final turn and staying on strongly in the straight. In a "blanket finish" which saw the first five finishers separated by less than a half a length he prevailed by a nose from Dantsu Prius.
On 30 May Search For A Song made her racecourse debut in a maiden race over ten furlongs on good to firm ground at Fairyhouse Racecourse in which she was ridden by Chris Hayes and started the 4/6 favourite in a six-runner field. After racing prominently from the start she went to the front in the last quarter mile and pulled away to win "comfortably" by four lengths from Lady Olenna. At Naas Racecourse on 26 June Search For A Song was stepped up in class and went off the 2/1 favourite for the Listed Naas Oaks Trial. She led for most of the race but was overtaken inside the last quarter mile and finished second, two and three quarter lengths behind the Jessica Harrington-trained Trethias.
On his first appearance of 2014, Slade Power was matched against Maarek (who had won the Prix de l'Abbaye in October 2013), in the Greenlands Stakes on 24 May. On his racecourse debut Arcano started the 7/2 second favourite for a maiden race over six furlongs on good to firm ground at Newbury Racecourse on 11 June. Ridden by Martin Dwyer, he took the lead a furlong out and held off the challenge of the John Gosden-trained Showcasing (later to win the Gimcrack Stakes) to win by a head. On 9 July the colt was stepped up in class for the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse in which he was again partnered by Dwyer and was made the 7/4 favourite against ten opponents. After tracking the front-running Orpen Grey, he took the lead inside the final furlong and won by three quarters of a length with a gap of three lengths back to Red Jazz in third.
In his first two starts of 2015 Big Orange proved no match for the seven-year-old gelding Clever Cookie, finishing fourth in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester and seventh in the Grand Cup at York. On 9 July Big Orange started the 25/1 outsider in an eight-runner field for the Princess of Wales's Stakes over one and a half miles on good-to-firm ground at Newmarket. The Wolferton Stakes winner Mahsoob started favourite while the other runners included Gospel Choir (Yorkshire Cup) Second Step (Jockey Club Stakes), Hillstar (Canadian International Stakes) and Sheikhzayedroad (Northern Dancer Turf Stakes). Ridden by Jamie Spencer, Big Orange led from the start and rallied after being overtaken a furlong out to win by half a length and a head from Second Step and Gospel Choir.
Ardross, who had won the Ascot Gold Cup and been unbeaten over staying distances in 1981 and 1982 was retired to stud at the end of 1982, leaving the major staying races of 1983 looking much more open than they had done for some time. Little Wolf began his season by being dropped down in distance for the John Porter Stakes over one and a half miles at Newbury and finished second to the four-year-old Diamond Shoal to whom he was conceding six pounds. In the Yorkshire Cup he again failed to show his best form on very soft ground and finished sixth behind the filly Line Slinger. On 16 June, Little Wolf started the 4/1 second favourite for the Gold Cup over two and a half miles on firm ground at Royal Ascot.
On his racecourse debut, Lanfranco contested a maiden race at Newmarket Racecourse in June and finished second of the twelve runners, beaten half a length by the Guy Harwood-trained St Hilarion. In another maiden at Yarmouth Racecourse in July he recorded his first success, winning very easily from six opponents at odds of 1/4. In the Exeter Stakes at Newmarket in August he faced only two opponents and led for most of the way to defeat Kohaylan by two and a half lengths. The runner-up subsequently franked the form by winning the Acomb Stakes at York later that month Lanfranco sustained a minor injury in the Exeter Stakes (Cecil described him as having been "jarred up" on the firm ground) and he missed the Royal Lodge Stakes which had been his intended target.
Where Or When made his racecourse debut in a minor event over seven furlongs at Ascot Racecourse on 14 July in which he started the 9/1 outsider in a five-runner field. Ridden by Richard Quinn he overcame a slow start, some difficulty obtaining a clear run in the last quarter mile and a stumble entering the final furlong to take the lead 75 yards out and won by three quarters of a length from Prince Domino. The colt was immediately stepped up in class for the Group 3 Vintage Stakes over the same distance at Goodwood Racecourse on 1 August and came home eighth of the ten runner behind Naheef. Two week later he started 2/1 second favourite for a minor race on good to firm ground at Salisbury Racecourse and won "readily" by three and a half lengths.
She was still only fifth a furlong out but continued her run to take the lead in the final strides and won by a head from African Dancer with Roses for the star in third. Although the filly had run well on good and firm ground Prendergast had insisted that the Sarah Siddons would be better suited by a soft surface, which she encountered for the first time in the Prix Vermeille at Longchamp Racecourse on 19 September. With Lester Piggott taking over the ride from Roche, she started a 24/1 outsider in a field which included Pawneese, Riverqueen, Lagunette and Theia. She produced a strong late run to take the lead from Lagunette inside the last 200 metres and looked the likely winner, but Lagunette rallied to defeat the Irish filly by a nose.
Ascot Racecourse: the site of two of Fayr Jag's major wins On his first appearance as a five-year-old Fayr Jag ran poorly as he finished thirteenth of the fifteen runners behind Monsieur Bond in the Duke of York Stakes on good-to-soft ground 11 May. On 19 June the gelding ran for the second time at Royal Ascot when he was one of fourteen horses to contest the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes over six furlongs on firm ground. On her first appearance as a three-year-old More So was ridden by Christy Roche when she was one of 17 fillies to contest the Irish 1000 Guinea on good to firm ground at the Curragh on 12 May. Despite her lack of experience she was made the 2/1 joint favourite alongside Cistus, the only British-trained challenger who had won the Waterford Candelabra Stakes and finished second in the Critérium des Pouliches in the previous year. The best fancied of the other runners were Enid Calling (winner of the Tyros Stakes and Mulcahy Stakes), Quatemala (second in the Athasi Stakes) and Ridaness (Moyglare Stud Stakes). The race was run only a week after the English 1000 Guineas and Enid Calling (seventh to Enstone Spark at Newmarket) was the only filly to contest both races.
He began to make steady progress, overtook the leader Time Star approaching the final furlong and held off the sustained challenge of Only Royale to win by a head. After a break of three and a half months, Sunshack returned in the Group One Prix Royal-Oak over 3100 metres on firm ground at Longchamp on 22 October and started odds-on favourite ahead of Assessor, a British stayer whose wins included the Doncaster Cup, Prix du Cadran and the 1992 Prix Royal-Oak. Four weeks later the filly returned to Grade I class and all-female competition for the Victoria Mile over 1600 metres on firm ground at Tokyo and started 3/1 second choice in the betting. She faced several of her old rivals from her three-year-old days including Animate Bio, A Shin Returns, Oken Sakura and Wild Raspberry, but by far her most formidable opponent was the outstanding five-year-old racemare Buena Vista who started the 1/2 favourite. Drawn towards the wide outside of the seventeen runner field she was restrained towards the rear before making a strong late run in the straight.
After racing towards the rear in the early stages he kept on well to come home third behind Advertise and the filly Forever In Dreams, with Ten Sovereigns in fourth. The colt was entered for the Nunthorpe Stakes at York Racecourse in August but was withdrawn on account of the unsuitably firm ground. After a break of two and a half months Hello Youmzain returned on 7 September for the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock, a race which saw him matched against older horse for the first time. The earliest evidence of an astrological significance of a seven-day period is connected to Gudea, priest-king of Lagash in Sumer during the Gutian dynasty, who built a seven-room temple, which he dedicated with a seven-day festival. In the flood story of the Assyro-Babylonian epic of Gilgamesh, the storm lasts for seven days, the dove is sent out after seven days, and the Noah-like character of Utnapishtim leaves the ark seven days after it reaches firm ground. Counting from the new moon, the Babylonians celebrated the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th as "holy-days", also called "evil days" (meaning "unsuitable" for prohibited activities). On these days, officials were prohibited from various activities and common men were forbidden to "make a wish", and at least the 28th was known as a "rest-day".
On her first run of 1996 Sil Sila contested the Listed Masaka Stakes over one mile at Kempton Park Racecourse on 6 April and sustained her first defeat as she came home seventh of the thirteen runners behind Sea Spray. Two weeks later, in the Fred Darling Stakes (a major trial race for the 1000 Guineas) at Newbury she proved nomatch for Bosra Sham and was beaten eight lengths into third place. She was then stepped up in trip to ten and a half furlongs at York Racecourse on 14 May for the Musidora Stakes, a race which often serves as a trial for the Epsom Oaks. Racing on good to firm ground she started the 12/1 outsider in a five-runner field but stayed on well in the closing stages and finished second to Magnificient Style.
On her racecourse debut Chelsea Rose started the 11/2 fourth choice in the betting in a thirteen-runner maiden race over seven furlongs at Leopardstown Racecourse on 9 June. Racing on good to firm ground she headed the Aidan O'Brien-trained favourite Silk And Scarlet a furlong out and won "comfortably" by two lengths. On 8 August the filly was stepped up in class for the Group 2 Debutante Stakes over the same distance at the Curragh but after disputing the lead for most of the way she was overtaken in the closing stages and came home third behind Silk And Scarlet and Luas Line. Despite her defeat in the Debutante, Chelsea Rose was moved up to Group 1 class for the Moyglare Stud Stakes over the same course and distance on 5 September and started at odds of 9/1 in a twelve-runner field.
Sinndar's next race was the Derby, although until just before the race, the possibility of firm ground at Epsom had led Oxx to consider running the colt in the Prix du Jockey Club- the French Derby instead. Despite the late withdrawal of the 2,000 Guineas winner King's Best, the field for the 2000 Derby was a strong one, and Sinndar was fourth in the betting behind Sakhee, Beat Hollow and the Ballydoyle-trained Racing Post Trophy winner Aristotle, with Best of the Bests, representing Godolphin also well supported. Oxx was confident of a prominent showing, saying, "Our fellow will run well and I'll be disappointed if he doesn't run a cracking race and be involved in the finish". In the race, Sinndar ran close behind the leaders, and as the runners entered the straight he was fourth, behind Best of the Bests, Sakhee and the Henry Cecil-trained Wellbeing.
12 And when they saw him from a distance they did not know him; and they cried with a loud voice, and wept, and rent every one his garment, and sprinkled dust upon their heads, 13 and they sat down beside him seven days and seven nights, and no one of them spoke; for they saw that his affliction was dreadful and very great. Chapter IV (4) 1 Then Eliphaz the Thaemanite answered and said, 10 The strength of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the exulting cry of serpents are quenched. 11 The old lion has perished for want of food, and the lions’ whelps have forsaken one another. Chapter IX (9) 8 Who alone has stretched out the heavens, and walks on the sea as on firm ground 13 For if he has turned away his anger, the whales under heaven have stooped under him.
Second, he does not say that his existence is necessary; he says that if he thinks, then necessarily he exists (see the instantiation principle). Third, this proposition "I am, I exist" is held true not based on a deduction (as mentioned above) or on empirical induction but on the clarity and self-evidence of the proposition. Descartes does not use this first certainty, the cogito, as a foundation upon which to build further knowledge; rather, it is the firm ground upon which he can stand as he works to discover further truths.Self, Reason, and Freedom: A New Light on Descartes' Metaphysics Andrea Christofidou; chapter 2 As he puts it: > Archimedes used to demand just one firm and immovable point in order to > shift the entire earth; so I too can hope for great things if I manage to > find just one thing, however slight, that is certain and unshakable.
Lucky Vega made his racecourse debut in a maiden race over six furlongs on good to firm ground at Naas Racecourse on 8 June in which he was ridden by Shane Foley and started the 9/2 second favourite in an eighteen-runner field. After tracking the leaders he showed his inexperience as he hung to the left approaching the final furlong but kept on well to overtake the favoured Lipizzaner in the closing stages to win by half a length. For his next start, the colt was stepped up in class to contest the Group 2 Railway Stakes over the same distance on softer ground at the Curragh on 18 July and started the 3/1 second favourite. He lost his position entering the last quarter mile before staying on in the closing stages to finish second, beaten half a length by the 66/1 outsider Laws of Indices.
Sadly, at the beginning of January 1967, his father died. He had some significant distractions. Fortunately, Mr. Helvey, who was the Chairman of the Board of The Voice of Montclair State, had a dedicated and motivated team of fellow students who carried the ball. The leadership of Les Anderson, Vice-Chairman; Barbara Faber, Business Manager; Wendy Burke, Recording Secretary; Ellen Connelly, Corresponding Secretary; George Steinmetz, Chief Engineer and the rest of the staff proved that WVMS and the Voice of Montclair State were on firm ground and had the capability of continuing after Ed Helvey and the other seniors on the staff would graduate in a few months. Helvey's final contribution to WVMS was to negotiate an arrangement with WFMU, the FM campus radio station of Upsala College in East Orange, to broadcast a 27-hour WVMS Marathon program over WFMU's station one weekend during the spring 1967 semester.
After racing in fourth place she made steady progress in the straight, caught Atasari in the final strides and won by a neck. Two weeks after her win at Leopardstown Bethrah started a 16/1 outsider in a nineteen-runner field for the Irish 1000 Guineas on good to firm ground at the Curragh. The British- trained filly Music Show started the 3/1 favourite ahead of Gile Na Greine (third in the 1000 Guineas) and Lolly For Dolly (Athasi Stakes) while the other runners included Lillie Langtry, Anna Salai (Prix de la Grotte), Termagant (Moyglare Stud Stakes), Lady Springbank (C L Weld Park Stakes, Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes), Song of My Heart (Blenheim Stakes) and Atasari. On 21 July Confidential Lady was stepped up in class for the Listed Star Stakes over seven furlongs at Sandown Park and was made the 11/2 second favourite in an eleven-runner field.
According to Hillier, the teams who had to transport the gin back into the colony along Oxford Street (formerly South Head Road) were "winding between trees and outcrops of sandstone, between swamp and firm ground, found the easiest way for the footslogger was through land not yet parcelled out. But any track that opened up the bush was welcome, and once it was established it acted as a frontage for later grants of all sizes and the most incredible shapes. This track was named Glenmore Road and it is still the winding link between Oxford Street and the New South Head Road built in the 1830s along the harbour foreshores." At the opening of the oval there was a great demonstration of community feeling - the owners of produce stores gave bags of potatoes, butchers in the district gave a sheep each, bakers gave bread and grocers gave jams and tea.
Starting the 9/1 outsider of the four runners he took the lead a quarter of a mile from the finish but was overtaken and beaten three and a half lengths into second by the John Dunlop-trained Bahhare. On 3 October the colt was moved up to Group One class for the Group One Middle Park Stakes over six furlongs on good-to- firm ground at Newmarket Racecourse and started the 8/1 fifth choice in the betting behind Bahamian Bounty, Indian Rocket (Mill Reef Stakes), Hurricane State and Easycall (Richmond Stakes, Flying Childers Stakes). Fifteen days after his run in the Middle Park Stakes, In Command returned to Newmarket to contest Britain's most prestigious race for two-year-olds, the Dewhurst Stakes on rain-softened ground.
This operation continued through the night; platoon-sized ambush patrols were sent out along Highway 4 north of Đồng Tâm but could not intercept many VC. On 16 November the MRF began operations with the 3rd Brigade, 9th Infantry Division and elements of both the ARVN 7th and 9th Divisions along the border of Kien Phong and Dinh Tuong Provinces. The Allied force targeted the VC 502nd Local Force and 267th Main Force Battalions, which IV Corps and II Field Force intelligence predicted were in Base Area 470. Troops of the 3rd Brigade were landed by helicopter in the northern part of the area along with the 3/47th Infantry, which was initially under the control of the 3rd Brigade. Since Base Area 470 lacked firm ground needed for artillery fire support bases, and artillery positioned along Highway 4 could not reach the area, experimental artillery firing platforms were used. One platform accommodated an M102, 105 mm artillery piece, ammunition, and space for the crews to operate.
In a close finish, Shemaka prevailed by a neck from Baya, with Dancienne a length and a half away in third place. After a break of over two months Shemaka returned in the Group 3 Prix de la Nonette at Deauville Racecourse on 29 August in which she was accompanied by her pacemaker Mouloudya and started the 11/10 favourite ahead of four other fillies, namely Baya, Viviana (second in the Prix de Psyché), Adored Slew (second in the Prix de Minerve) and the British challenger Talented. Ridden by Mosse and racing on good to firm ground, she won by half a length and a nose from Baya and Talented. On her final racecourse appearance Shemaka contested the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe over 2400 metres at Longchamp on 3 October and, despite being made the 7.8/1 sixth choice in the betting, came home last of the 23 runners behind Urban Sea.
Racing up the stands-side (the left-hand side from the jockeys' viewpoint) Fayr Jag tracked the leaders before going to the front inside the final furlong and finished in a dead heat for first place with the John Hammond-trained Ratio, who raced up the opposite side of the course. In August the gelding finished eighth of the twenty-nine runners behind Patavellian in the Stewards' Cup at Goodwood before being stepped up in class to contest the Listed Hopeful Stakes on good-to-firm ground at Newmarket and started 11/8 second choice in the betting behind the improving three-year-old Somnus. Over the same course and distance two weeks later, the filly was assigned top weight of 136 pounds in the Skybet Dash Handicap and started 9/2 favourite despite carrying at least ten pounds more than any of her fourteen opponents. Hills sent the filly into the lead a furlong out and she kept on well to win by three quarters of a length from the eight-year-old gelding Connect. York Racecourse, where La Cucaracha won the Nunthorpe Stakes in 2005 After racing over six furlongs for most of her career, La Cucaracha was dropped back to five furlongs and stepped up to Group One class for the first time when she contested the Nunthorpe Stakes on firm ground at York on 18 August.

They were well regarded for their skills in horsemanship and swimming, for their men and horses could cross the Rhine without losing formation, according to Tacitus. Dio Cassius describes this surprise tactic employed by Aulus Plautius against the "barbarians" -- the British Celts -- at the battle of the River Medway, 43: :The barbarians thought that Romans would not be able to cross it without a bridge, and consequently bivouacked in rather careless fashion on the opposite bank; but he sent across a detachment of Batavians, who were accustomed to swim easily in full armour across the most turbulent streams. [...] Thence the Britons retired to the river Thames at a point near where it empties into the ocean and at flood-tide forms a lake. This they easily crossed because they knew where the firm ground and the easy passages in this region were to be found; but the Romans in attempting to follow them were not so successful.
In the 243rd running of the St Leger Stakes on good to firm ground over 1 mile 6 furlongs on 14 September at Doncaster Racecourse Technician started at odds of 20/1 and never looked likely to win, finishing sixth of the eight runners behind Logician. On 5 October Technician was sent to France for a second time and went off at odds of 6.9/1 for the Group 2 Prix de Chaudenay over 3000 metres on very soft ground at Longchamp. The Prix de Lutèce winner Moonlight Spirit started favourite while the other eight contenders included Dashing Willoughby (Queen's Vase) and Nayef Road. After being restrained in the early stages by Pierre-Charles Boudot, who was riding the colt for the first time, Technician produced a sustained run in the straight to overtake the front-running Moonlight Spirit in the final 100 metres and win by three quarters of a length.

Dio Cassius describes this surprise tactic employed by Aulus Plautius against the "barbarians"--the British Celts-- at the battle of the River Medway, 43: :The barbarians thought that Romans would not be able to cross it without a bridge, and consequently bivouacked in rather careless fashion on the opposite bank; but he sent across a detachment of Germanic tribesmen, who were accustomed to swim easily in full armour across the most turbulent streams.
Although Easter Sun had spent most of his career racing over distances of around a mile and a quarter, his regular jockey Bruce Raymond had always believed that the horse would be better over a longer distance. On his first appearance of 1982 the horse was moved up in class and distance for the Aston Park Stakes, a weight-for-age contest over one mile five furlongs at Newbury Racecourse in May in which he faced by the established Group race performers Prince Bee (winner of the Gordon Stakes, Great Voltigeur Stakes and Prix Niel) and Critique (Cumberland Lodge Stakes). Racing on firm ground and receiving weight from his two principal opponents, he accelerated into the lead inside the final furlong and won by half a length from Critique with a gap of seven lengths back to Prince Bee in third. On 3 June Eater Sun made his first appearance in a Group race when he started a 20/1 outsider in an eight- runner field for the Group One Coronation Cup at Epsom.

Litvinov was subsequently deported from Sweden, but spent the next months as a roving diplomat for the Soviet government, helping to broker a multilateral agreement allowing the exchange of prisoners of war from a range of combatants, including Russia, Great Britain, and France. This successful negotiation amounted to de facto recognition of the new revolutionary Russian government by the other signatories to the agreement and established Litvinov's importance in Soviet diplomacy. However, Litvinov undoubtedly tried to intervene in Britain's internal politics agreeing at the request of the Daily Herald, a newspaper supporting the Labour Party, to ask the Soviet government to give it financial assistance saying: > If we do not support the Daily Herald, which is now passing through a fresh > crisis, the paper will have to turn to a Right trade union. After Lansbury’s journey to Moscow > earlier in the year, the Herald has moved considerably to the Left and > decidedly advocates direct action in support of the Soviet regime. It needed > £50,000 in six months, after which once again it hoped to be on firm ground.
Racing on good-to-firm ground she tracked the leaders before being outpaced in the straight and finished fourth behind Lush Lashes, Cape Amber and Dar Re Mi. Moonstone was a member of a six-horse Ballydoyle contingent for the 230th running of the Oaks at Epsom Racecourse on 6 June and with Johnny Murtagh, who had ridden her in her first two starts, opting to partner Adored, she had Richard Hughes in the saddle. She was made a 25/1 outsider but after being restrained at the rear of the field in the early stages she stayed on strongly in the straight to finish second to Look Here with the favoured Lush Lashes back in fifth. Murtagh was back in the saddle when Moonstone started 2/1 favourite for the Irish Oaks at the Curragh Racecourse on 13 July. The better fancied of her thirteen opponents included Katiyra (winner of the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial and third in the Epsom Oaks), Gagnoa (Prix Penelope, second in the Prix de Diane), Mad About You (second in the Irish 1,000 Guineas) and Chinese White.
