After being converted to Islam, the descendants of the previously Buddhist Uyghurs in Turfan failed to retain memory of their ancestral legacy and falsely believed that the "infidel Kalmuks" (Dzungars) were the ones who built Buddhist monuments in their area. Buddhist influences still remain among the Turfan Muslims. Since Islam reached them much after Altishahr, personal names of un-Islamic Old Uyghur origin are still used in Qumul and Turfan while people in Altishahr use mostly Islamic names of Persian and Arabic origin. The mujahideen of the Islamic Chagatai Khanate conquered the Uyghur and Hami was purged of the Buddhist religion which was replaced with Islam.
The Club won the Byrne Cup final, overcoming Mullinavat in the final (final played in Ballyhale) but failed to retain their League title, losing a close encounter 1–18 to 1–17 against James Stephens. They had been attempting to retain the trophy for a sixth year in a row. The Club has qualified for a championship semi-final meeting with O'Loughlin's after defeating Dunamaggin in the quarter final on a scoreline of 1–19 to 0–09. The game was very tight and nervous for the first half and the scoreline of 0–09 (BS) – 0-07 (D) did not do justice to Dunamaggin's challenge.
The following season, The Fellow's best performances in his first six races of the season were four thirds. He failed to retain the King George, finishing third behind Barton Bank and Bradbury Star, and then came third in the Racing Post Chase behind Antonin. However, in that race he had stayed on well at the end of the race and was giving substantial amounts of weight away to all of his rivals bar Docklands Express, where it was only 5 pounds. Barton Bank, one of the favourites for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, was injured shortly before the race, which improved The Fellow's chances of winning.
Blackburn Rovers failed to retain their league title and finished seventh in the league, with Alan Shearer finding the net more than 30 times for the third season in a row. Nottingham Forest finished ninth in the league and were the only English side to progress to the last eight of any of the European competitions, doing so in reaching the quarter-final UEFA Cup. 1995-96 was one of the worst seasons ever for English clubs in European competitions. Bolton Wanderers were relegated in bottom place, having won just twice before New Year's Day, with not even an improvement under caretaker manager Colin Todd helping them.
While Gardiner was returned unopposed on 11 July 1917, Scaddan lost the by-election held on 21 July 1917 to Labour candidate John Lutey, who had held the seat for 27 days in 1916. This was only the second occasion in Western Australia's parliamentary history—the first having been the defeat of half of the Morgans Ministry in December 1901—that a Minister had failed to retain his seat at a ministerial by-election resulting from his appointment. : The Liberal member for Perth, Sir James Connolly, resigned in June 1917. The Nationalist (Liberal) candidate, Robert Pilkington, won the seat at the resulting by-election on 21 July 1917.
When Gerakan joined the Barisan Nasional in 1973, David resigned to join the Parti Keadilan Masyarakat Malaysia. In the 1974 general election, both his Dato' Kramat and Pantai seats were abolished in a re-delineation exercise. David turned to contest in the Jelutong parliament seat (also in Penang) against Rasiah Rajasingam, a former Gerakan colleague, but lost. In 1978, as a candidate of the Democratic Action Party this time, David defeated Malaysian Indian Congress strongman, Deputy Minister S. Subramaniam for the Damansara parliament seat, but failed to retain his seat again in 1982 to Tan Koon Swan who later became Malaysian Chinese Association president.
The 1980–81 Yugoslav Cup ((; ; , ); also known as "Marshal Tito Cup" (Kup Maršala Tita); was the 33rd season of the top association football knockout competition in Yugoslavia since its establishment in 1946. The defending 1979–80 cup winners Dinamo Zagreb failed to retain the trophy as they were knocked out in the second round (i.e. round of 16) by Radnički Niš. Herzegovina side Velež from Mostar and Bosnian side Željezničar from Sarajevo reached the tournament final, in what would become the only cup final contested by two clubs from SR Bosnia and Herzegovina in the history of the competition which ran from 1946 to 1992.
McDaid joined the government in 1997 when he became Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation. During his tenure he earned the nickname the "Minister for Fun", however, he presided over much more weighty issues such as investigations into controversial events such as drugs allegations in sport and sex abuse by swimming coaches. Following the 2002 general election McDaid failed to retain his Cabinet post, but he did become a Minister of State. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the North-West constituency at the 2004 European Parliament election and was later sacked from his position as Minister of State and returned to the backbenches once again.
The club failed to retain the Keyline Cup they won last year by finishing third in the six-team tournament when they visited Oban in mid July. A series of domestic friendly matches sandwiched a trip to the Republic of Ireland before the club's centenary friendly draw at home to Newcastle United. A friendly win at home to FA Premier League side Blackburn Rovers was the club's last pre-season encounter, although in late July, the club confirmed a November friendly with rivals Dundee to mark the opening of the club's new floodlights. United ran out 3-1 winners with goals from Andis Shala, Danny Cadamarteri and Jon Daly.
The by-election was significant, as National held on to the majority of the House of Representatives by only one seat (50 to 49). This meant the party would have lost its majority in the House if it failed to retain the seat, and it would have required the formation of a coalition or a confidence-and-supply agreement with another parliamentary party - probably New Zealand First or the Alliance - to maintain governance. All "major" New Zealand political parties of the day contested the by- election. David Carter, the National Party candidate, won the seat, and therefore the distribution of seats in Parliament did not change .
At the 1987 federal election, Bishop was elected to the Senate in the fifth position on the Coalition's ticket in New South Wales. She was effectively a one-to-one replacement for Sir John Carrick, who was retiring from politics. She was the second woman to serve as a senator for New South Wales, and the first to be popularly elected; Sue West had been appointed to a casual vacancy a few months earlier, but had failed to retain her seat. Bishop was elevated to the shadow ministry by Andrew Peacock in 1989, as Shadow Minister for Public Administration, Federal Affairs and Local Government (1989–1990).
The NDP won reelection in 1995 and 1999, and (in coalition with the Liberals) again in 2003. Lorne Calvert (1952– ), an ordained minister, served as NDP premier 2001–2007. Brad Wall (1965– ) became premier as his centre-right Saskatchewan Party took over from the NDP after a landslide victory in the November 2007 election. The landslide grew after 4 years of solid economic management, nearly wiping out the NDP (losing 11 of 20 seats) in the 2011 election in which NDP party leader Dwain Lingenfelter even failed to retain his own seat (what was once considered a "safe seat" for the NDP, Regina-Elphinstone).
Portuguese involvement in the internal politics of Kotte increased with the arrival in 1550 of viceroy Afonso de Noronha and a contingent of some 500 Portuguese soldiers. The Portuguese sacked Sitawaka later that year, but failed to retain the city. Accounts indicate that Mayadunne had adopted a policy of simply evacuating his capital and retreating into the surrounding terrain when the Portuguese approached—on occasion leaving the palace lights burning and spreading white cloth on the floor as a welcome for the invaders. Once the invaders had left the capital, the king's forces would then harass them along the route down to the Kelani river.
The match was played at St James' Park in Newcastle with Wales taking an early lead through Tommy Mills. The tension of the match was so intense Mills nearly failed to return for the second half having been sick during half-time. Eric Brook equalised for England in the second half but, with less than ten minutes remaining, Dai Astley scored a header to give Wales victory and win the Home Championship in consecutive years for the only time in the nation's history. Wales failed to retain their title in the 1934–35 competition, finishing last, but narrowly missed out on another title in the 1935–36 British Home Championship.
Klas Eriksson (born 30 July 1971) is a Swedish professional golfer. Eriksson was born in Växjö and turned professional in 1991 having won the European Amateur and the French Amateur Stoke Play Championship the previous year. He finished 45th on the Order of Merit in his rookie season, but injuries and putting problems meant he failed to retain his card at the end of the 1998 season and he was back on the Challenge Tour in 1999. Eriksson graduated from the Challenge Tour for a second time in 2001 by finishing 7th on the Rankings having won for the fourth time on the tour at the Talma Finnish Challenge.
Although their relationship initially improved, Sacchi gave Baggio limited playing time, and he soon fell out of form, along with the rest of the squad, which caused their relationship to deteriorate again. A.C. Milan failed to retain their league title, finishing the season in a disappointing 11th place, and they were knocked out once again in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia. Baggio made his UEFA Champions League debut in the 1996–97 season, scoring his first goal in the competition, although Milan were eliminated in the group stage. Milan also lost the 1996 Supercoppa Italiana to Fiorentina, as Baggio was left on the bench.

On 31 May 2013 the Electoral Commission cancelled United Future's registration at the party's request after it failed to retain 500 members. The party became an unregistered party – unable to contest the party-list vote. However, on 10 June 2013, its party president made a media release stating that it had succeeded in attracting the needed 500 members for re-registration. It was subsequently reported that United Future was encountering difficulties over its re-registration, related to the need to acquire printed proof of sufficient membership, although Party President Robin Gunston had supplied the Electoral Commission with copies of traceable economic transactions associated with the influx of new members.

Seven episodes were broadcast immediately after the highly-rated series Cheers, but failed to retain the strong audience of that series and was cancelled after only seven episodes had aired. Todd Waring later reprised another Hanks role in a 1988 television sequel to Splash for The Wonderful World of Disney titled Splash, Too.
Uruguay's Nacional would trounce Honduras' Olimpia 5-1 on aggregate the following year. Colombia's Atlético Nacional made short work of Club Universidad Nacional; however, South America hegemony would once again be broken by América after defeating Paraguay's Olimpia. Compatriots Puebla failed to retain the trophy in Mexico after being routed by Chile's Colo-Colo. The importance of the competition decreased significantly after two Brazilian clubs, Copa Libertadores winners São Paulo (1993) and Grêmio (1995) declined to participate out of disinterest; both times, the Copa Libertadores runners- up, Chilean side Universidad Católica and Atlético Nacional took their place; each of them were pushed to the limit by Costa Rica's Saprissa.
He failed to retain his seat in the 1997 General Elections. After the elections he formed a group, the Organisation for National Enlightenment, ONE which he would abandon in the attempt to form a National Alliance with his former arch enemies, John Compton and George Odlum. When this coalition floundered and the Alliance splintered he took to the hustings in 2001 and to make an impression in his old stomping grounds, Castries East on the platform of the National Front. He last appeared at the hustings when he campaigned for Richard Frederick in the by-election of 2005 and the General Elections of 2006.

Following Heddle's suicide in December 1989, a by-election followed on 22 March 1990. The by-election attracted a blaze of publicity, and a large number of candidates (14), as it took place at the height of the public dissatisfaction with the Conservative government over the Community Charge or Poll Tax (indeed, the notorious Poll Tax Riots took place only days after the by-election). Sylvia Heal of the Labour Party was victorious in the by- election; however she failed to retain the seat at the 1992 general election, losing to the Conservatives' Michael Fabricant. In 1997, a review by the Boundary Commission reorganised the constituencies in Staffordshire, and Mid Staffordshire was abolished.
The 2010–11 season was Chelsea Football Club's 97th competitive season, 19th consecutive season in the Premier League, and 105th year in existence as a football club. They went into the Premier League as the defending champions, but failed to retain it. The club was managed by their Double-winning manager Carlo Ancelotti, but his association with the club would be broken off, being sacked at the end of the season. Chelsea started off the season with an amazing five-consecutive-wins run in the Premier League, which was eventually halted by Manchester City when City skipper Carlos Tevez scored to lead his side into a 1–0 triumph over the defending champions.
In the league, Arsenal failed to retain the championship despite having led by eight points in March 2003. However, they did win the FA Cup for a second successive year, beating Southampton in the 2003 FA Cup Final. On 20 July 2003, Bergkamp signed a one-year extension at the club. The 2003–04 season ended on a high point for Bergkamp as Arsenal reclaimed the league title, becoming the first English team in more than a century to go through the entire domestic league season unbeaten. Against Leicester City in the final league match of the campaign with the score tied at 1–1, Bergkamp set up the winner with a pass to captain Patrick Vieira.
Liverpool failed to retain the trophy on this occasion as they were beaten in the quarter-finals by CSKA Sofia in the 1981–82 competition. A sixth successive English victory was still achieved however, as Aston Villa, playing in the European Cup for the first time, beat Bayern Munich 1–0 in the final in Rotterdam. The run of victories by English clubs came to an end in 1982–83 when both Liverpool and Aston Villa went out at the quarter-final stage after losing to Widzew Łódź and Juventus respectively. In the 1983–84 competition, Liverpool once again reached the final, where they faced Roma in the latter's home stadium, the Stadio Olimpico.

On 16 March 2009, Reade was selected in the British squad for the World Track Cycling Championships in Pruszków, Poland, where she once again competed alongside Victoria Pendleton in the Women's Sprint and Team Sprint events. In 2009 however Reade and Pendleton failed to retain their team crown, winning only a silver after losing out to Kaarle McCulloch and Anna Meares of Australia. Reade was philosophical after this setback telling BBC Sport "I did the best possible ride I could do on the day so I'm really happy." In April 2015 it was announced that Reade was re-joining the Great Britain track squad after a period based in the United States competing in BMX.
Upon his return visits, Reece kept in touch with Thatcher and newspaper editors. During the 1987 election he was appointed Thatcher's adviser for television, but he kept a low profile, because he had also been retained as PR consultant by Guinness in their controversial take-over battle with Distillers. Reece was a frequent visitor to the Thatchers' at Christmas Day dinners, and continued to act as a troubleshooter for her with the media and colleagues: he was part of her team of advisers when she failed to retain the party leadership in November 1990. Unlike many of her entourage, he reportedly maintained good relations with Thatcher's successor as Prime Minister, John Major.
Savićević's final seasons at Milan were less successful. The 1996–97 season saw the arrival of several new players, as well as manager Óscar Tabárez; Milan started the season with a 2–1 loss in the 1996 Supercoppa Italiana to Fiorentina, with Savićević scoring Milan's only goal of the match. A series of disappointing results in the league saw Milan's former coach Arrigo Sacchi return to the club as a replacement. Milan failed to retain their league title, finishing the season in a disappointing 11th place, while they were once again knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia, and also suffered a group stage elimination in the UEFA Champions League.

CPI(M) failed to retain its presence in the legislature in the 1967 assembly election, its six candidates obtained 3,019 votes (0.39% of the total votes in the state, 4.08% in the six constituencies contested). CPI(M) would remain very marginal force in state politics after the split, its role in Himachal politics would only take off years later with the establishment of Students Federation of India unit at the Himachal Pradesh University.

He again failed to retain his card, finishing 167th on the money list, and missed earning a card in qualifying school by one stroke.
Labour presented the 1997 election, held just weeks after spectacular victories for the French Parti Socialiste and Tony Blair's New Labour, as the first ever choice between a government of the left and one of the right, but the party, as had often been the case following its participation in coalitions, lost support and failed to retain half of its Dáil seats. A poor performance by Labour candidate Adi Roche in the subsequent election for President of Ireland led to Spring's resignation as party leader. In 1997 Ruairi Quinn became the new Labour leader. Negotiations started almost immediately and in 1999 the Labour Party merged with Democratic Left, keeping the name of the larger partner.
The NWSC remained fairly neutral. In the 2016 Legislative Council election, NWSC veteran legislator Leung Yiu-chung switched his constituency from New Territories West to the territory-wide District Council (Second) constituency. Leung was elected with more than 300,000 votes but his protege Wong Yuen-tat failed to retain his seat in the New Territories West with only about 20,000 votes. In June 2018, some 22 younger members in the NWSC including five members of the NWSC's eight-member executive board left the centre amid ideological differences with Leung Yiu-chung and Leung's decision to scrap the workers' committee due to financial woes, as Leung intended to fund his re-election in the next election in 2020.

In bowling, however, Sinfield worked so well in the frequent absence of Goddard that he was chosen for the First Test at Trent Bridge. Though he was not successful apart from capturing Bradman's wicket and failed to retain his place, Sinfield did have a number of notable bowling feats, including 14 for 110 on a rain-affected wicket against Worcestershire. In 1939, Sinfield was asked to do much less bowling with Goddard fully fit and devastating on the helpful Bristol turf, but Sinfield did recapture some of his old skill with the bat. Though, since his record was only 835 runs and 66 wickets it could hardly be said he was in his best form.
After several unsuccessful attempts at the European Tour qualifying school, Edberg finally gained his tour card in 2004, having played most of that year on the second tier Challenge Tour. Edberg failed to retain his playing privileges on the European Tour in his rookie season, and after a year of limited opportunities in 2006, regained his tour card for 2007 at final qualifying school. In 2007 he finished tied for 12th place at the 136th Open Championship played at Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland, and had three top-10 finishes, including a tie for 3rd at the Smurfit European Open. He finished the season ranked in 51st position on the 2007 European Tour Order of Merit.
The third-party vote tripled, and the total vote remained nearly stationary: a partial indication, perhaps, of the derivation of the Free Soil strength in this section. For the first time since the existence of the Whig Party, the Whigs failed to gain an absolute majority of the vote in Massachusetts and Vermont. In addition, the Democrats failed to retain their usual majority in Maine; thus only New Hampshire (Democratic) and Rhode Island (Whig) of the states in this section gave their respective victorious parties clear-cut majorities. Of the 1,464 counties/independent cities making returns, Cass placed first in 753 (51.43%), Taylor in 676 (46.17%), and Van Buren in 31 (2.12%).

Following a failed expedition to the town led by Louis the Pious around 812, allegiance to the Franks collapsed after Enecco Arista rose to prominence.
Lin retained his number one world ranking during 2005, winning his second German and Hong Kong Open titles, as well as the Japan Open, China Masters, and World Cup tournaments. He also helped China recapture the Sudirman Cup (combined men's and women's team championship) when it shut-out both defending champion South Korea in the semifinals and Indonesia in the final. Lin failed to retain his All England title, losing a three set final to teammate Chen Hong, and he was beaten in the final of the Malaysia Open by another rising star, Lee Chong Wei. In his bid to capture his first BWF World title at Anaheim California, he beat Kennevic Asuncion, Shoji Sato, Lee Hyun-il, and Peter Gade in succession to reach the final.
To the surprise of many in the province, he was not appointed to the first cabinet of Dalton McGuinty in October 2003. This was widely interpreted as a snub, but subsequent events cast the decision in a much different light: Agostino died on March 24, 2004, of liver cancer. He had been battling the disease for some time and had undergone surgery during the 2003 campaign, although this information was not made public until his death. In a by- election to fill his legislative seat held on May 13, 2004, his brother Ralph, a Catholic separate school board trustee, failed to retain the Hamilton East seat for the Liberal Party, falling far behind city councillor and NDP candidate Andrea Horwath.
At a time when Germany was swinging decisively towards SPD politics, Lotz as a CDU man found himself increasingly out of tune with the political mood of the time, while his position placed him at the head of a particularly political company. His relationship with the VW trades union leaders was not constructive and he failed to retain the support of the Supervisory Board. The struggle to maintain management control of the business left him with insufficient time to drive through resolution of the increasingly urgent issues involving product policy: he resigned as chairman on 13 September 1971, to be succeeded by Rudolf Leiding. In the Autumn/Fall of 1977 Lotz published a memoir entitled "Lebenserfahrungen - Worüber man in Politik und Wirtschaft auch sprechen sollte".

He considered running as a candidate for the New Territories East geographical constituency in the 2004 LegCo election. However, the pro-Beijing camp pressed stronger HKPA candidates to drop out of the race so as not to split the vote and spoil DAB candidates' chances of election in the same constituencies; instead, Tso Wung-Wai ran as the HKPA candidate in Chu's place, and lost badly, ensuring the victory of DAB candidates Lau Kong-wah and Li Kwok-ying. Chu stood as a candidate to be returned to the 11th National People's Congress in January 2008, but did not gain enough support; along with Philip Wong, he was one of two former Hong Kong deputies who failed to retain their seats.
Beckham visited Afghanistan in May 2010 for a morale- boosting visit to British troops fighting the Taliban insurgency. The appearance of Beckham as well as British Foreign Secretary William Hague and Defence Secretary Liam Fox was believed to have prompted a Taliban attack on Kandahar airfield. Chinese authorities appointed Beckham as global ambassador for Chinese football in March 2013. After numerous officials had been banned for match-fixing, and the Chinese Super League had failed to retain the services of well-known international names, Beckham's role was to help improve the image of the game and raise its profile both in China and abroad. From 14 July 2013, Beckham started appearing in adverts for BSkyB advertising their Sky Sports coverage via the Sky Go app.

Chan was born in Hong Kong in 1938. He graduated from the Queen Elizabeth School and continued his study in civil engineering at the University of New South Wales in Australia. He is the member of the Institution of Civil Engineers in England, Institution of Engineers in Australia and Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. This prompted then coach, Marcello Lippi, to switch Zambrotta to the left-back when he returned to action. Zambrotta adapted to his new position very quickly and performed particularly well, demonstrating his pace, stamina, work-rate, technical ability, his tactical intelligence and versatility, as well as his ability to contribute both offensively and defensively. Zambrotta remained a regular first team player as Juventus won their second consecutive Scudetto and reached the Champions League final, in which they were defeated by Milan in a penalty shoot-out after a goalless draw. The following season, Juventus avenged the defeat by beating Milan to the 2003 Supercoppa Italiana on penalties, and also reached the 2004 Coppa Italia Final, although they failed to retain their league title or progress in Europe.
At the October 2007 federal elections, Zisyadis failed to win reelection, however, on 1 November 2007 successful party candidate Marianne Huguenin announced her resignation from the National Council to focus on her position as mayor of Renens, leaving Zizyadis to take the Party's seat in the National Council representing Vaud. Zisyadis since the founding of the new party Alternative Left in 2010 is a member of that party, but also stays member of the Swiss Party of Labour. Zisyadis again failed to retain his mandate in the 2011 elections, his seat passing to the Social Democrats. The Alternative Left coalition gathered 1.2% of the popular vote nationwide; with the loss of Zisyadis' seat, the far-left loses all representation at the federal level.
Lyons was added to the Limerick senior hurling panel for the early stages of the 2017 season, however, he failed to retain his place for the championship. Lyons rejoined the Limerick senior panel in 2018, making his debut as a substitute for Aaron Gillane in a 1-24 to 0-10 defeat of Offaly in the National Hurling League. On 19 August 2018, he was a member of the extended panel when Limerick won their first All-Ireland title in 45 years after a 3-16 to 2-18 defeat of Galway in the final. Lyons was a member of Limerick's extended panel once again during the 2019 National League, however, he made no appearance during Limerick's eight-game run to the title.
Of the original clubs in the first Football League season, only Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Derby County and Everton were present for this season. Arsenal failed to retain their title, despite having the same points tally as last season 78 points, but had at one point looked as though they were on the brink of winning the title, after beating fellow rivals Tottenham Hotspur, while Manchester United had drawn against Liverpool, 2–2. However, Manchester United pushed on and took advantage of Arsenal's 1–0 defeat at Leeds United in the penultimate match of the season and despite going 1–0 down against Tottenham on the final day, came back to win 2–1 and clinch the title. Should they have failed to win, Arsenal would have been crowned champions once more.
Many Hong Kong English bands and singers performed on EYT during the 1970s, such as Agnes Chan, The Young Men, the Lotus, etc. By 1989 Enjoy Yourself Tonight had suffered a terminal decline in audience number; despite (or perhaps because of) a radical change in format (which saw weeknight programmes reduced to half-hour durations, plus the traditional full-length variety shows on Saturdays) including the use of a new theme song in the tune of the original which debuted in 1991, it failed to retain viewers, who by then had developed new tastes and had access to new forms of entertainment. As a result, the show ended its 27-year run in October 1994. To this day, however, TVB does not admit that Enjoy Yourself Tonight has ended its run.
Aeriwentha ("Mae") Faggs Starr (April 10, 1932 in Mays Landing, New Jersey – January 27, 2000 in Cincinnati) was an American athlete who mainly competed in the sprint events. She graduated from Bayside High School, and then went to Tennessee State University to run under Hall of Fame coach Ed Temple. She competed for the United States in the 1952 Summer Olympics held in Helsinki, Finland where she won the gold medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay with her teammates Barbara Jones, Janet Moreau and Catherine Hardy. Four years later she went to the Melbourne 1956 Games as the sole returnee from the 1952 Games relay team, and teamed up with Margaret Matthews, Wilma Rudolph and Isabelle Daniels but failed to retain the title, only managing to come away with the bronze medal.

The Eagles' last 5 games are the easiest in the NFL, based on records. However, in the first of the last five games, week 13 the Eagles lost 37–31 in Miami to the Dolphins, who were 2-9 heading into the game. The Eagles had a 28–14 lead in the third quarter but failed to retain the lead as the Dolphins punted only once in the second half. In the next two weeks, the Eagles beat the Giants at home on an overtime touchdown pass from Wentz to Ertz after coming back from a 17–3 halftime deficit, and then beat the Redskins in Washington 37-27 after Nigel Bradham sealed the game with a fumble return for a touchdown following a go-ahead touchdown pass by Greg Ward Jr. from Carson Wentz.
Mahatelage Henry Peiris (2 May 1910 - 1959) was a Ceylonese Marxist politician and a pioneer member of the country's socialist movement. Peiris was a Lanka Sama Samaja Party activist, a compatriot of Leslie Goonewardene and the editor/publisher of the underground Marxist newspaper, Samasamajaya. At the 1st parliamentary election, held on 16 September 1947, Peiris successfully ran as the Bolshevik Samasamaja Party candidate in the Pandura electorate, defeated his more credentialed opponent, Sir Susantha de Fonseka, (the United National Party candidate and the former deputy speaker of the State Council of Ceylon) by 2,546 votes. Pieris contested the 2nd parliamentary election held between 24 May 1952 and 30 May 1952 but failed to retain his seat, losing to the United National Party candidate, D. C. W. Kannangara, by 3,856 votes.
In his first season at Deepdale, St Ledger made 42 appearances whilst scoring one goal as Preston, who had been top of the league mid-season, failed to retain a playoff berth come May. St Ledger began the 2007–08 season as first choice centre half alongside Youl Mawéné, scoring his second goal for Preston in a 1–0 win over Coventry City on 9 February 2008. The following week, St Ledger received the first red card of his Preston career in a 2–1 defeat at Colchester United, St Ledger taking out United's Karl Duguid as he went through on goal. St Ledger made 37 appearances for Preston during 2007/08 as the Lilywhites were guided clear of the relegation thanks to a late upturn in results under new manager Alan Irvine.
In snooker, the "Crucible Curse" refers to the fact that no first-time winner of the World Snooker Championship has successfully defended his title since the event was first held at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield in 1977. Of the 18 first-time champions in this era, only two have even made the final the following year, and six were eliminated in their first match. The "curse" can even be seen in the pre-Crucible era—the three first-time champions between the start of the championship's "modern era" in 1969 and its move to the Crucible all lost in their respective semifinal matches the next year. All three players went on to win a championship at the Crucible, and all failed to retain their title after their first victory at that venue.
In the 14th century, a Chagatayid khan Tughluq Temür converted to Islam, Genghisid Mongol nobilities also followed him to convert to Islam. His son Khizr Khoja conquered Qocho and Turfan (the core of Uyghuristan) in the 1390s, and the Uyghurs there became largely Muslim by the beginning of the 16th century. After being converted to Islam, the descendants of the previously Buddhist Uyghurs in Turfan failed to retain memory of their ancestral legacy and falsely believed that the "infidel Kalmuks" (Dzungars) were the ones who built Buddhist structures in their area. From the late 14th through 17th centuries the Xinjiang region became further subdivided into Moghulistan in the north, Altishahr (Kashgar and the Tarim Basin), and the Turfan area, each often ruled separately by competing Chagatayid descendants, the Dughlats, and later the Khojas.
This confirmed the ending of Labour's monopoly, being the party to represent ethnic minorities but now there is a rebalancing amongst the leading parties in the UK. However, other parties are still behind in order to a part of the rebalancing, never having an ethnic minority representation in parliament. However, the Liberal Democrats are not at fault for lacking representation for minority MPs as it has been revealed between 1992 and 2010, they increased their candidates for MPs from a minority background: 5, (1992), 17 (1997), 29 (2001), 40 (2005) and 44 (2010); it reveals they should consider candidates for more winnable seats to allow increased representation. In 2004, Parmjit Singh Gil won the by-election for the Liberal Democrats but failed to retain his seat in the 2005 elections.
California, Ultimately, the scattered references to "due process of law" in English law did not limit the power of the government; in the words of American law professor John V. Orth, "the great phrases failed to retain their vitality." Orth points out that this is generally attributed to the rise of the doctrine of parliamentary supremacy in the United Kingdom, which was accompanied by hostility towards judicial review as an undemocratic foreign invention.Orth, 28–30. Scholars have occasionally interpreted Lord Coke's ruling in Dr. Bonham's Case as implying the possibility of judicial review, but by the 1870s, Lord Campbell was dismissing judicial review as "a foolish doctrine alleged to have been laid down extra-judicially in Dr. Bonham's Case..., a conundrum [that] ought to have been laughed at".
Hansen took the All Blacks to Samoa for the first ever official test match, where the All Blacks won the match 25–16. In a shortened Rugby Championship, the All Blacks failed to retain the title they held for three years. Having beaten Argentina 39–18 and South Africa 27–20, a final match against Australia would see either New Zealand or Australia claim the Championship. For the first time since 2011, Australia beat the All Blacks 27–19. During the 2015 Rugby World Cup, despite some error ridden games in the Pool stage, Hansen led the All Blacks to the top off Pool C with victories over Argentina, 26–16, Namibia 58–14, Georgia 43–10 and Tonga 47–9, before beating France in the quarter-final 62–13 and South Africa 20–18 in the semi- final.
He made his first-class debut for the Leeward Islands in 1985–86 and took four wickets in the game, but failed to retain his place the following year. A Viv Richards scholarship provided funding for him to play club cricket in England for Chester Boughton Hall Cricket Club in the highly rated Liverpool Competition during 1986 where he took 84 wickets at an average of 9.80. The following year, he returned to England to play for Heywood Cricket Club in the Central Lancashire League, for whom he took 115 wickets in the season; these experiences helped to improve his bowling technique. Upon his return to Antigua, Ambrose practised intensely, regained his place in the Leeward Islands team and, in the absence of leading bowlers Winston Benjamin and Eldine Baptiste with the West Indies team, became the main attacking bowler in the side.
Despite the poster she retained her senatorial portfolio in Mayor Diepgen's following the 1999 election even though the election had delivered a small reduction in the SPD vote share, leading to a reduction in the number of senatorial seats allocated to it in the city's senate coalition. She also retained it when Mayor Diepgen was succeeded as mayor by her SPD colleague Klaus Wowerweit following the Berlin Bank scandal. However, the new administration proved unstable due to the underlying balance of seats in the Berlin parliament, and when fresh state elections were called for October 2001 she resigned her senate seat. Once the results were declared, it turned out that she had, in addition, failed to retain her seat in the city parliament, which went instead to a young university professor, Benjamin-Immanuel Hoff, of the PDS (party).
He was appointed Chief Cabinet Secretary by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in September 2005, before going on to replace Koizumi as LDP president in September 2006. He was subsequently confirmed as prime minister by a special session of the National Diet, becoming, aged 52, Japan's youngest post-war prime minister, and the first to have been born after World War II. Abe resigned as prime minister after one year in office, citing medical complications from ulcerative colitis, shortly after his party lost that year's House of Councillors election. He was replaced by Yasuo Fukuda, who became the first in a series of five prime ministers who each failed to retain office for more than sixteen months. After recovering from his illness, Abe staged an unexpected political comeback, defeating former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba in a ballot to become LDP President for the second time in September 2012.
After the end of World War II and the liberation of Albania in 1944 Albania fell in the hands of the socialist dictator Enver Hoxha, and soon after sport in the country became organised, with national teams and domestic competitions being set up by the communist regime, and this happened with basketball in 1946. In early March 1946 at the Nacional movie theatre in Tirana, the ruling Communist Politburo had instructed the club to change its name to 17 Nëntori in honour of the Liberation of Tirana which took place on 17 November 1944 and later that year 17 Nëntori became a founding member of the Albanian Basketball League and they won the inaugural National Championship that took place in 1946. They failed to retain the title the following season as local rivals Partizani won the National Championship, but 17 Nëntori were to win 3 consecutive titles between 1948 and 1950.
In his first match for his new county, Keith scored 82 and 12 not out against Oxford University, but though it was a new highest score for him it was also his only first-class match of the 1962 season. He played only three matches in 1963, but the long- standing opening batsman Jimmy Gray was available for only the second half of the 1964 season, and Keith stood in for him for the first two months, opening with Roy Marshall, though he failed to retain his place for long once Gray was available again. In the most prolific season of his career, he scored 653 runs with a highest of 75 and an average of 21.76. There were more matches but a different batting position in 1965: Barry Reed and Mike Barnard became Marshall's more regular opening partners, while Keith resumed batting in the middle order.
In the final, Galway met Leinster champions Offaly. Despite having beaten the Faithful County in the previous year's semi-final, Galway failed to retain their title, being three point losers on a score of 2-12 to 0-15. Galway returned to the final in the 1985 championship, beating Cork to qualify. In the final, the team again met Offaly, and were beaten by their eastern neighbors by 2-11 to 1-12. Galway were again runners up in the 1986 final, when they were beaten by Cork. The 1987 championship saw Galway qualify for their third final in a row. Still managed by Farrell, Galway overcame Tipperary by 3-20 to 2-17 to make it to the decider. Captained by Conor Hayes and inspired by the young Joe Cooney, who scored five points on the day, Galway defeated Kilkenny by 1-12 to 0-09 in the final.
They however failed to retain both trophies as Manchester United pipped Arsenal on the final day of the league season, winning the Premier League as well as defeating the holders in a FA Cup semi-final replay. United won the league for two successive seasons: in 1999–2000 ending the season 18 points in front and 2000–01 by 10. After four seasons without a trophy, Arsenal again completed a league and cup double in 2001–02 remarkably scoring in every single Premier League match. The title the following season was won by Manchester United, with striker Ruud van Nistelrooy scoring 25 goals in 38 league matches. In the summer of 2003, Chelsea were taken over by businessman Roman Abramovich and despite the club spending over £100m on new players, the 2003–04 champions were Arsenal, who became the first Premier League club to win the league without defeat.
In 2003 the DSP became the first (and so far only) Socialist Alliance affiliate to become an internal tendency within the Alliance, changing its name to the Democratic Socialist Perspective, in line with its view that SA should become a "Multi- Tendency Socialist Party", a view that the May 2003 National Conference of the Socialist Alliance subsequently adopted. Each of these changes of name and tactics has been accompanied, like in many far-left groups, with a turnover of members. While the SWP and DSP recruited many activists from the radical student movement of the 1970s and from various social movements since, it failed to retain most of them for long as the sixties and seventies radicalisation wave has receded. Nonetheless, the DSP has retained a core membership drawn from each upsurge of political struggle, some of whom are founding members of the party back in 1972.
Browne plays his club hurling with Mount Sion and has enjoyed much success in a lengthy career. After claiming championship medals in the minor and under-21 grades, he later became a key member of the Mount Sion senior hurling team. Browne won his first championship medal in this grade in 1994 following a 2–13 to 1–11 defeat of Passage. After surrendering their title the following year, it was 1998 before Mount Sion reached the championship decider once again. Ballyduff Upper were the opponents on that occasion, however, a 3–19 to 0–10 thrashing gave Browne his second championship medal. Mount Sion failed to retain the title once again, however, Browne lined out in a third successive decider in 2000. A 1–20 to 0–9 trouncing of Ballygunner gave Browne a third championship medal. Both Mount Sion and Ballygunner lined out in the county final once again in 2002. A 1–19 to 2–14 victory gave Browne his fourth championship medal.
Bergkamp was consoled with the PFA Players' Player of the Year award, becoming only the third non-British player to be recognised by his fellow professionals as the outstanding performer in English football. After an effective 1998 World Cup campaign with the national team, Bergkamp had another productive season in 1998–99. Although Arsenal failed to retain the Premier League after losing the title on the final day of the season to Manchester United, Bergkamp was the club's second-top scorer in all competitions, with 16 goals, and finished the season as the top assist provider in the Premier League, alongside Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, with 13 assists. Arsenal were also defeated in a FA Cup semi-final replay against Manchester United in April 1999. With the score 1–1 heading into injury time, Arsenal were awarded a penalty after midfielder Ray Parlour was brought down by Phil Neville inside the 18-yard box.
The 1989–90 season saw the beginning of Hendry's period of dominance. That season, he won the 1989 UK Championship, Dubai Classic, Asian Open, Scottish Masters, The Masters and his first World Championship, beating Jimmy White 18–12 in the final, elevating him to the summit of the world rankings at the age of 21. The following season, he set a record of five world ranking titles in one season and recorded a hat-trick of Masters, beating Mike Hallett 9–8 after coming back from 0–7 and 2–8 behind in the final. However, Hendry failed to retain his world title, losing to Steve James in the quarter- finals. In the 1991–92 season, Hendry regained the World title, winning 10 frames in a row in the final to come from 8–14 down to defeat White 18–14, adding to the victories in both the Grand Prix and the Welsh Open.
This structure of administering the navy lasted for 285 years, however, the supply system was often inefficient and corrupt its deficiencies were due as much to its limitations of the times they operated in. The various functions within the Admiralty were not coordinated effectively and lacked inter-dependency with each other, with the result that in 1832, Sir James Graham abolished the Navy Board and merged its functions within those of the Board of Admiralty. At the time this had distinct advantages; however, it failed to retain the principle of distinctions between the Admiralty and supply, and a lot of bureaucracy followed with the merger. In 1860 saw big growth in the development of technical crafts, the expansion of more admiralty branches that really began with age of steam that would have an enormous influence on the navy and naval thought. Between 1860 and 1908, there was no real study of strategy and of staff work conducted within the naval service; it was practically ignored.
The Orthodox believe themselves to be the one, holy, catholic and apostolic, that is, the true Church established by Jesus Christ and placed into the care of the apostles. As almost all other Christian groups are in indirect schism with the Orthodox Church, mostly as a result of the Great Schism with the Catholic Church at the turn of the second Christian millennium (before the schisms of the Protestant Reformation), these other groups are viewed as being Christian, but who, to varying degrees, lack full theological orthodoxy and orthopraxy. As such, all groups outside of the Orthodox Church are not seen as being members of the church proper, but rather separated brethren who have failed to retain the fullness of the Christian faith and theology. These deviations from orthodoxy have traditionally been called heresy, but due to the term's perceived pejorative connotations, some prefer the more technical designation of the term heterodoxy.
A committed and vocal supporter of Scottish independence, MacDonald entered parliamentary politics by winning the 1973 Glasgow Govan by-election as an SNP candidate at 30 years old. There were "scenes of near-hysteria by supporters" as she was declared the winner in what had, until then, been a Labour stronghold. Her election, during the last months of the Conservative Heath government, "overturned the theory that the SNP can thrive only [...] when a Labour Government is in office". She has alleged that her election to the House of Commons was followed by KGB and CIA agents taking her for lunch while posing as journalists, and believed the SNP was infiltrated during the 1970s by MI5 agents worried booming North Sea oil revenues could lead to independence. She failed to retain her seat in the following general election of February 1974, but became Deputy Leader of the SNP that year. At a December 1974 National Council meeting, Margo criticised the SNP for failing to win seats from Labour in industrial Scotland and urged the party to move to the left to compete.
Born in Gijón, Asturias, Reyes began his professional career with local Real Avilés Industrial, in Segunda División B. For the 2000–01 season he moved to La Liga with neighbouring Real Oviedo, making his first appearance in the competition on 22 October 2000 in a 3–1 home win against RC Celta de Vigo; the following month he scored in a 4–1 victory over Real Valladolid also at the Estadio Carlos Tartiere, but the club eventually failed to retain its status as third from bottom. For 2002–03, Reyes joined Villarreal CF again in the top division, for three years. He appeared very rarely with the Valencian team, and finished the campaign with Segunda División's Getafe CF; in the following season, also with the Madrid side, he achieved a first-ever promotion to the top tier, but only saw action in two games (both from the bench). Reyes then signed for Albacete Balompié, but did not play one single second in the first part of 2004–05, due to injury.
After graduating the Higher School of Coaches in Moscow in 1979, Fomenko has coached numerous Ukrainian clubs, most notably Dynamo Kyiv. With Fomenko the club won its first Ukrainian gold medals, first Ukrainian Cup both in 1993 and most notably, beating Barcelona in the very first leg of the Champions League tournament. Barcelona ended up to be finalist of that 39th season of the UEFA Champions League. Before that success, in the end of 1989, he promoted Georgian club Guria Lanchkhuti to the Soviet Top league and in 2001 reached Ukrainian Cup final with CSKA Kyiv what is the best result in club's history. On 26 December 2012, Fomenko was given a one-year contract – with a possible second-year extension – as head coach of Ukraine national team after the Football Federation of Ukraine had failed to retain Harry Redknapp and Sven-Göran Eriksson for the role. Fomenko coached Ukraine to six 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification wins, coming against Poland (twice), Moldova, Montenegro, San Marino and France, as well as one draw against England.
Success continued right throughout the decade, as they won five league championships and a further FA Cup in seven years. Following the Second World War, Arsenal won two more championships and a FA Cup, but their fortunes gradually declined. It was not until 1970 that the club won another trophy – the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, a European club competition designed to promote trade fairs. A first league and cup double was completed a year later; by the end of the decade Arsenal added another FA Cup, beating Manchester United in the 1979 final. 1980 saw Arsenal lose two finals in quick succession, defeated by West Ham United in the FA Cup final and then to Valencia in the Cup Winners' Cup on penalties. The club won their first League Cup in 1987, but a year later failed to retain the trophy as outsiders Luton Town beat them in the final. In 1989, Arsenal won their first league championship in 18 years, courtesy of Michael Thomas' last-minute goal against closest challengers Liverpool in the final game of the season. The club did not build on their success, finishing fourth the following season, but regained the title in 1991.
Strickler's bogey on the 18th, plus Nationwide Tour graduates Michael Putnam and Justin Hicks placing in the top 25, allowed Scott Gordon and Billy Horschel (Strickler's friend and former Florida teammate) to earn their tour cards as well. Shortly after earning his PGA Tour card, he signed with TaylorMade-adidas for endorsement and sponsorship. In January 2011, Strickler made his first career PGA Tour start at the Farmers Insurance Open. In May 2011, Strickler contended for the lead at the HP Byron Nelson Championship. He posted a 4-under-par 66 in the opening round, carding an eagle and five birdies along the way, including an impressive 52-foot putt at the 15th hole. In December 2011, Strickler made his first appearance at the Australian Masters. Strickler failed to retain his tour card and returned to the Canadian Tour in 2012. During the 2012 Canadian Tour season, he made six of eight cuts and posted three top-10 finishes. His best finish came at the Dakota Dunes Casino Open in July where Strickler shot -19 to force a playoff in which he narrowly lost to Matt Hill in a sudden-death playoff.

The party was founded in 1977 by the then Chief Minister of Kelantan, Mohamed Nasir, under the persuasion and endorsement of United Malays National Organisation who were dissatisfied with the demands made by the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party. These demands included internal squabbles for the lump share in controlling the state of Kelantan, and pressure from UMNO soon led to PAS withdrawing from Barisan Nasional. In the following 1978 general election, the split cost the PAS a huge number of votes in Kelantan: among the 36 state seats in Kelantan, UMNO won twenty three, BERJASA won eleven, to set up the Kelantan state coalition government while PAS won only two as opposition. BERJASA subsequently joined BN, but support for BERJASA quickly dissolved and only managed to win four seats in the subsequent 1982 general election. BERJASA stayed out of the 1986 general election as it had pulled out from BN in protest of the admission of another new splinter party of PAS, Parti Hizbul Muslimin Malaysia into BN. In 1989, it joined Angkatan Perpaduan Ummah opposition parties coalition under the leadership of Parti Melayu Semangat 46 (S46). It managed to win one seats in the 1990 general election but failed to retain it in 1995 general election.
Cleere began his hurling career at club level with Bennettsbridge. After coming to prominence at juvenile and underage levels, he became a starting fifteen regular with the club's senior team during the 1959 Kilkenny County Championship. Cleere ended his first full season at senior level with a Kilkenny County Championship medal after a 4-06 to 1-04 win over Erin's Own in the final. He won a second successive championship title the following year after Bennettsbridge retained the title with a 4-05 to 3-04 win over Glenmore in the 1960 final. After failing to secure a third successive title in 1961, Cleere made his third final appearance the following year. He ended the game with a third winners' medal after the 5-07 to 2-08 victory over Lisdowney. Bennettsbridge again failed to retain the title, however, Cleere added a fourth winners' medal to his collection after a 4-09 to 1-04 defeat of Glenmore in the 1964 final. Mooncoin beat Bennettsbridge by a goal in the 1965 final, however, the club qualified foe a third successive decider in 1966. Cleere collected a fifth championship title after the 4-08 to 2-04 win over champions Mooncoin.
He won a bronze medal at the 2006 Asian Games as part of the India men's snooker team.
