On 2 August 1812 met up with Emulous and reported that an American privateer was said to be sheltering nearby. The two set out together and as they approached the coast Emulous suddenly grounded. During the efforts to get her off, Colibri took off all non-essential crew and the prisoners she had on board. Shortly thereafter Emulous fell over onto her beam-ends and became unsalvageable.

Her last commander was Lieutenant Caleb Jackson (acting). Emulous arrived at Deptford on 19 June 1816 to pay off and was laid up there. The Admiralty sold her for £900 in August 1817.

He was appointed to command the brig- rigged sloop of war HMS Emulous serving at Halifax, Nova Scotia. Shortly after war with America broke out in 1812, Emulous was wrecked on Cape Sable Island, and Mulcaster was recruited for service on the Great Lakes by Yeo (whose frigate, HMS Southampton had also been wrecked shortly before in the Caribbean). Mulcaster was initially offered command of the flotilla on Lake Erie but he declined on grounds of the scarcity of resources there. Instead, he acted as second in command to Yeo.

On 22 July 1814, Godfrey removed to . Captain John Gore then took command on 23 July 1814 and remained until 3 February 1815. In June 1815 Emulous came under the command of Commander John Undrell, still on the Jamaica station. His replacement was the newly promoted Commander Thomas Wrenn Carter, who removed to in April 1816.

On August 12, at dusk, Chub came under friendly fire from , which mistook Chubb for an American privateer. Chubb had earlier stopped at Liverpool, Nova Scotia and taken on board some volunteers who wanted to go a cruise with her. A chain-shot from Emulous killed two of these volunteers, Ebenezer Herrington (or Harrington), and John Scott. (Herrington was buried in the Old Burying Ground (Halifax, Nova Scotia)).

While he was well known in society, this last failure effectively saw him blacklisted in the Royal Navy and he never had another command. Having been made an honorary Doctor of Civil Laws (DCL) by the University of Oxford in 1825, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society on 15 November 1827. He died on 8 October 1832, on board the packet boat Emulous en route from Buenos Aires to Britain to be treated for eye problems.

In the final two furlongs she drew clear of the field and was never seriously challenged, winning by six lengths from Midday. Midday's trainer, Henry Cecil, admitted that "the winner was just too good for her." Misty for Me started 6/4 favourite for the Group One Matron Stakes at Leopardstown in September, but after briefly taking the lead she finished third to Emulous and Together. On her final appearance, Misty for Me was sent to Kentucky to contest the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Churchill Downs.

Giovanni was the son of a well-known mathematician, Andrea Argoli, and was born at Tagliacozzo in the Abruzzi. At the age of fifteen he published a poem on the silkworm, Bombace e Seta (Rome, 1624). Two years later, emulous of the reputation Marino had just gained with his Adone, the young Argoli is said to have shut himself in an apartment, where he was visited only by servants bringing his food, and in seven months, at the age of seventeen, produced his Endimione (Rome, 1626). It met with a success apparently at least equal to the author's hopes.

'Critic', in line 11, is of interest. The OED cites Shakespeare for its first use of the noun, critic, in the 1598 quarto of Loves Labours Lost. However, a double check using the Early English Books Online database will reveal 'critic' entering the language in the 1590s, from 1591, 'a certaine suspicious and suspected Criticke, emulous of his betters credite', and pushed into popularity by satirists like Everard Guilpin and John Marston. 'Critic' is a new word of the 1590s, used by Shakespeare in the pairing with 'flatterer', the latter term being one of very high frequency in the political literature of the period.
