A small car with a 2-cylinder De Dion engine was also built. This had the added advantage over many of its contemporaries of having the capability to drive backwards.

The main clutch and the main brakes can be engaged by pedals, the throttle by a handle. By means of a reverse device the three gears can also be applied to drive backwards. Steering was generally very tiring and there was a tendency to jump out of gear when the clutch was engaged too forcefully. The tank's official top speed is only 8.1 km/h.

Rear steer system With this system, a grapple loader is mounted on the rear of a short frame chassis with an operator's cab mounted between loader and chassis cab. The loader is operated from this cab, and all driving controls are also routed to the operator's cab enabling the "rear steer" unit to drive backwards along the route and load into separate haul trucks.

Mater appears in all Cars video games and with Larry the Cable Guy reprising his role in all video games to date (with the exception of Cars 3: Driven to Win). In the video game Cars, Mater is a playable character in the Arcade Mode, "Tractor Tipping", and "Rustbucket Race-O-Rama" levels. He does commentary for the race in "Radiator Springs Grand Prix" and "Radiator Springs GP". He teaches McQueen how to drive backwards in "Mater's Backwards Lesson".

The music video for "Save Me", directed by Phil Harder, was filmed in Minneapolis, Minnesota and features clips of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota State Fairgrounds and of the bridges along the Mississippi River, including the I-35W Mississippi River bridge which collapsed in August 2007. In the music video, Cinjun Tate is different from everyone else. Everyone around him walks in reverse and cars drive backwards. The band performs inside a giant room with background projections of unrelated images (a lizard for example).

Mater runs "Tow Mater Towing & Salvage" and is the first to befriend and support Lightning throughout his adventure in Radiator Springs. During the film, Mater shows Lightning how to do "Tractor-Tippin'" and how to drive backwards without crashing, a technique which Lightning uses to counter Chick Hicks' dirty racing in the Piston Cup tiebreaker. In the end, McQueen asks Tex to give Mater an opportunity to fly in a Dinoco helicopter like he always wanted, saying to Sally that Mater is his best friend.

Because the system does not have separate gears, but one (continuously shifting) gear and a separate 'reverse mode' (as opposed to a reverse gear), the transmission works in reverse as well, giving it the interesting side effect that one can drive backwards as fast as forwards. As a result, in the former Dutch annual backward driving world championship, the DAFs had to be put in a separate competition because no other car could keep up. Thus, these very cheap and simple cars were the 'formula one' in this competition.

In the pilot episode, "The Mysterons," Captain Blue requisitions an SPV from a gas station, where it is hidden inside a fake truck. The station attendant comments that it must be a challenge to drive backwards. Captain Blue's evident expertise in driving SPVs is revealed in this episode; by contrast, Captain Scarlet himself is only moderately skilled at handling SPVs, as he tends to crash them in several episodes. In "Winged Assassin," an SPV is used to take on the DT-19 Stratojet on the runway as its Mysteron controllers try to deliberately crash into the Director General's own airplane.
