The definition of "tolerance" varies among partnerships, and may include any doubleton, only honor doubleton, or require three-card support. A typical hand for most partnerships would be . This makes the use of Puppet Stayman particularly important. The only hand with ten points or more which is passed in EHAA is a 4-4-4-1 distribution. Munson (or "Tolerance Redoubles")The Bridge World, May 1997. is an alternative, created by Kitty Munson Cooper, in which the redouble shows shortness (one or two cards) including the ace or king. After a Munson redouble, overcaller's spot-card lead in his suit is a showing which side suit overcaller prefers partner to lead back (shift). The Rosencranz redouble is also used to indicate a doubleton honor in overcaller's suit.

Suppose South wins the first trick with the ace and West gets in before trumps are drawn (with the ace of trumps, for example). Now West can lead his remaining card in the suit to East's king, and East can return the suit for West to ruff. Proper procedure is for South to hold up on the first trick, and win the ace on the second round of the suit.

Advocates of Precision say that it is generally more efficient (and precise, as the name would suggest) than systems such as Standard American. Because all opening bids except 1 are limited, the responder almost immediately knows the hand potential and the chances for a part score, game or slam. Critics of Precision question the wisdom of combining a strong club with 5-card majors. This causes certain hand shapes to bid awkwardly, and a high percentage of hands are opened with one diamond, including in some cases hands with only a doubleton diamond.

If one plays the 3, one's partner may take this view of the suit, and may switch to another suit hoping to get one in to lead though declarer's probable jack. It is also possible that one have the singleton or doubleton 8, in which case declarer would have 4 or 5 cards in the suit with the bidding revealing that. If the declarer had bid the suit, one's partner would also be less likely to lead from a broken honor sequence or lead the suit. Some players agree to unblock their highest honor when a King is led against a notrump contract, and with no honor to give a count signal.

In general, it is not required that the defense leads to the trick; often, the "killing suit" can be led by the declarer (because of an error or because he doesn't have anything else to lead). Sometimes, a defender can get a trump promotion by refusing to overruff: Spades are trump, and hearts are led by South or West; knowing that East is void, declarer must ruff high (with the queen or jack). If East hastily overruffs with the king, that will be the last trick for the defense. (The A and Q will take care of his now-doubleton T) However, if he discards a minor suit card, he will suddenly come into possession of two trump tricks—the king (which he was always entitled to) but also the ten - he can play low on the ace, take the queen with the king, and still have the ten.

A younger group demanded that violations of the proprieties be made part of a player's record. (Such violations can include, for example, fumbling with a doubleton on defense: a singleton would be played promptly, with no trace of indecision.) Kaplan's own view, adopted by the GNYBA and subsequently by the American Contract Bridge League’s National Laws Commission, was that if a player takes an action that could have been influenced by unauthorized information, that action constitutes an offense, but not an offense that should necessarily be regarded as cheating. Instead, the incident should be handled as a procedural matter – much as accidentally exposing a card is treated as a technical violation, not as an attempt to cheat. In this way, bridge is able to apply sanctions such as score adjustment when a player allows himself to be inadvertently and subconsciously influenced by, say, his partner's hesitation.
