In some of the selections, you can see elements that also surface in Fassbinder's work — whether it's in the topsy-turvy gender politics of Nicholas Ray's 1954 film "Johnny Guitar" (showing on Friday), or in the ambiguity and artifice of Josef von Sternberg's "Dishonored" (showing Sunday).
Unlike the original game's "The Knife of Dunwall" and "The Brigmore Witches" DLC packs, this one could be the beginning of a long string of episodic one-off experiences that further build out the series' world, something that seems increasingly likely given the Dishonored 2's poor sales performance.
Place and memory are bound in deep and fascinating ways — championship memorizers often build a "memory palace" in which to mentally house and display the things they are trying to remember — and the memory of Dishonored 2's locations has stuck with me in a way that's strangely powerful.
When she sees firsthand the plight of the working class in Karnaca, she affects concern and makes vague promises, but the finale of Dishonored 2 isn't devising a policy plan to tackle inequality, it's a boss battle against a witch—literally, 'a nasty woman'; Donald Trump would approve.

It has all the delicious layers of a wonderful immersive sim—of the System Shock and Thief lineage that's given us the Deus Exes, BioShocks and Dishonored games—with multiple paths through levels, valid ways of solving any given scenario, and plenty of story detail in every incidental email and audio log.

Simply more of the same won't work for Dishonored 2, and while Arkane's follow-up to its Thief-ish hit of 2012 offers the option of choosing between a male or female protagonist, it's how that selection works within what'll presumably be a similarly structured campaign for both characters that'll really make its world either feel alive or flat.
But on today's episode, Editor-In-Chief Austin Walker, myself, and Managing Editor Danielle Riendeau discussed our experiences as Emily Kaldwin in Dishonored 2, why two Nintendo fan games have disappeared from the nominations for this year's The Game Awards, and use The Question Bucket to talk about how the three of us ended up being full-time games writers.
Combined with Death of the Outsider's new powers—one allows you to assume the face of any character in the game, another grants teleporting short distances and through objects, while a third separate spirit from body in order to explore more freely—it's forced me to completely rethink how I approach the AI-driven puzzles at the heart of Dishonored.
Heavy hangs the crown on choreographers, too, burdened by the romantic cliché of "the Anguish of the Tormented Artist," as Gottlieb dubs it in his angry review of Boris Eifman's biographical ballet "Musagète," a Ken Russell-size vulgarization of the pre-eminent ballet genius of the 20th century, George Balanchine, which dishonored the stage of the New York City Ballet in 2004.
Some readers criticized what they viewed as racial stereotypes and careless borrowing from other cultural traditions: the novel features a diverse cast — including "a tawny-skinned minority of a Russian-esque princess; a disowned and dishonored Asian-esque assassin; an islander/Caribbean-esque child warrior; a Middle-Eastern-esque soldier," according to Ms. Zhao's description of the novel on her website.
If you're looking for us to dig into Dishonored 2, that'll have to wait until Monday (sorry!), but on this week's podcast, editor-in-chief Austin Walker, myself, and Managing Editor Danielle Riendeau discuss how we became active participants in the Frog Fractions 2 ARG (we think, anyway), using Pokémon Sun and Moon to relax, and, of course, something brand-new from The Question Bucket.
I must have enjoyed my time with Dishonored as I made it to the end credits, but I can't say I remember much about the story or how I saw it out—its 19th-century London-styled setting of Dunwall, and singular art style, were what kept me hooked over the characters' fates and whether or not my arsenal was set to kill or stun.
The RPG studio turned publisher has a great deal to be proud of—in recent years, it has bankrolled the beloved Dishonored franchise, overseen the resurrection of DOOM, and perhaps most impressively has built Fallout, a niche series largely thought deceased at the turn of the millennium, into a blockbuster property that makes a ridiculous amount of money across its mobile and triple-A iterations.

Revanchist, KKK-analogue Sons of the Harpy claimed the life of Targaryen loyalist Barristan Selmy, the dishonored (and perpetually friend-zoned) Jorah Mormont became a "Stone Man" leper while trying to prove his devotion to his Khaleesi, and trophy husband Hizdahr zo Loraq got stabbed to death—all so that Daenerys could say, "Haters gonna hate," and fly away on her dragon and wind up the captive of Dothraki tribal warriors. Again.

In a tumultuous year for the Metropolitan Museum of Art — which got a bright new director, Max Hollein; cut loose the Breuer, its underachieving satellite; and dishonored itself with new mandatory admission — this shadowy show of France's champion Romantic made it all O.K. (His first comprehensive retrospective in North America!) I might have preferred the Delacroix feast at the Musée du Louvre, its first stop; the Met has had to make do without most of his large works.
