The mission of this ship is to maintain the marine environment and navigability of the rivers, delimitate the maritime boundary and preserve the coastal area by collecting the necessary information and statistical data. She will also play a significant role in research activities and extraction of marine resources. She can also act as a support ship for mine warfare vessels.

The American black duck interbreeds regularly and extensively with the mallard, to which it is closely related. Some authorities even consider the black duck to be a subspecies of the mallard instead of a separate species. Mank et al. argue that this is in error as the extent of hybridization alone is not a valid means to delimitate Anas species.

In 1736 the French Geodesic Mission led by La Condamine and Jorge Juan y Antonio de Ulloa came to Ecuador in representation of Spain. It is not certainly known if La Condamine stayed at Guachalá, but it is confirmed that part of the Mission recognized the Cayambe Valley and stayed there, establishing Cerro Pambamarca as a reference point. La Condamine relates that the stakes put to realize the investigations were stolen each by natives even putting at risk their own lives, because they believed that they were used to delimitate the Spanish domains and stripping them of the few properties still own by them induced by murmuring of landowners, stewards and foremen in vicinity. Because of this, and added to the steepness of the ground in the Guachalá the Mission decided to continue their measurements on the plain of Yaruquí.
