In August 2020, Hill was found dead at his home from a suspected suicide. CCN erroneously reported the cause of death was a gunshot wound. Critics speculated that Hill's suspected suicide was partly triggered by CCN's reporting. In 2019, Aaron Ochs, a columnist from Morro Bay and frequent critic of Cal Coast News, published a book about the website called Defamers: How Fake News Terrorized a Community and Those Who Dared to Fight It. In the book, Ochs alleged he was personally retaliated against by Velie and Cal Coast News contributors.

In 1886, he inaugurated a system of constitutional rule, by placing several departments in the hands of four members of a council of state under his own presidency. This innovation—which had the support of the governor of Bombay, Lord Reay—provoked a virulent attack upon the chief, who brought his defamers to trial at the High Court of Bombay. The punishment of the ringleaders broke up a blackmailing system to which rajas were regularly exposed. The public spirit toward Takhtsinhji in freeing his brother chiefs from blackmail was widely acknowledged throughout India, as well as by the British authorities.

However, the French efforts were in vain. On the night of 28 February 1921, a protest rally attended by 12,000 was held in Madison Square Garden in New York City where France was condemned for the "black horror on the Rhine". A Republican Representative, Frederick A. Britten, issued resolution condemning France for the "black horror on the Rhine", and which called the Senegalese "semi-civilized, useless and oft-times brutal defamers of women". The American feminist Harriet Connor Brown in a letter to the State Department written in early 1921 accused Senegalese soldiers of rape, attempted rape, "immoral crimes against boys" and of forcing German officials in the Rhineland to open brothels for their benefit.

In 2020, CCN covered protests throughout San Luis Obispo inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and initiated after the death of George Floyd, a black American man killed during an arrest after allegedly passing a counterfeit $20 bill in Minneapolis. Their reporting evoked criticism from protesters for the allegations and reporter publishing them. In Defamers, Ochs wrote that Friedman, who reported on the protests, had suspected ties to white supremacy organizations including Oath Keepers and Freedom Force International, a group founded by American conspiracy theorist and John Birch Society member G. Edward Griffin. Friedman has also identified himself as a special correspondent for InfoWars, a conspiracy theory website known for publishing conspiracy theories about the Black Lives Matter movement.

In October 2007, CAMERA organized a conference entitled "Israel's Jewish Defamers," in which a panel of discussants accused selected Jewish critics of Israel, as well as one of Israel's leading newspapers, Haaretz, of distortions and falsehoods about Israel. CAMERA director Andrea Levin described the Jewish critics—who included Princeton University's Richard Falk, writer Norman Finkelstein, New York Review of Books contributor Henry Siegman, former New York Times columnist Anthony Lewis, Trent University professor Michael Neumann, and Tikkun magazine publisher Michael Lerner—of being guilty of "demonstrably false and baseless defaming of Israel, wildly distorted out of context accusations against Israel." Among the panelists were writer Cynthia Ozick and Harvard psychiatrist Kenneth Levin, who likened the Jewish critics to chronically abused children. In response, Anthony Lewis told the New York Sun that the conference was "about a nonexistent phenomenon," noting that Jewish criticism of Israeli policies was not necessarily defamatory.
