Her first appearance in a Grand Slam tournament was at the 2002 Australian Open and her first Grand Slam title came at the 2004 US Open over countrywoman Elena Dementieva, making her the third Russian woman to win a Grand Slam title, after Anastasia Myskina and Maria Sharapova.
Petkovic started the year in Brisbane where she defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands before losing to Serena Williams. At the Australian Open, she lost in first round to Magdaléna Rybáriková. In the first round of the Fed Cup World Group, Petkovic defeated Dominika Cibulková, the reigning Australian Open finalist, and contributed to a 3–1 win for Germany. After disappointing results in Asia (Doha and Dubai) and also both Indian Wells (first-round loss to Camila Giorgi) and Miami (second-round loss to Alizé Cornet), Petkovic rallied past qualifier Lesia Tsurenko, Lourdes Domínguez Lino (with a double bagel, 6–0, 6–0), fourth seed and countrywoman Sabine Lisicki (with a near-double bagel 6–1, 6–0) and both in three sets seeded Lucie Šafářová and Eugenie Bouchard in Charleston, to set up the final match-up against Jana Čepelová of Slovakia, whom she beat in straight sets for her third WTA title.
In 1316 Lewis was certified as one of the Lords of the Nottinghamshire towns of North Leverton, Habilsthorp and Cotes. Lewis was serving as Treasurer of Salisbury when he was nominated to be Bishop of Durham on 9 February 1317, thanks to the efforts of his countrywoman, Queen Isabella He was confirmed at Westminster on 11 September 1317 and was consecrated in Durham on 26 March 1318. Despite being accused of being illiterate, Lewis was appointed in the hope of providing strong military leadership in his diocese which sat on the dangerous Scottish border, much in the same way as his brother, Henry, had done for the past twenty years. It was a questionable choice on the part of King Edward as Lewis was reported to be lame in both feet and his lack of mobility would seriously limit his ability to lead armed forces against the guerilla tactics of Robert the Bruce.
The following month she raced at the European Road Championships, where she was narrowly defeated in the time trial by countrywoman Ellen van Dijk, securing a one-two for the Netherlands. At the Worlds in Innsbruck in September, she started her campaign by taking a silver alongside her Boels-Dolmans team-mates in the women's team time trial. She took a second silver in the individual time trial, where she was denied the rainbow jersey by her compatriot Van Vleuten and formed part of a Dutch clean sweep of the podium places ahead of the third placed Van Dijk. She finally won her first Worlds gold in the road race, bridging over from a chase group to a group of five at the head of the race on the penultimate climb, before launching a solo attack with 39 km to go and crossing the finishing line alone with a lead of over three and a half minutes over runner-up Amanda Spratt.

With the season's excellent results propelling her rapidly upwards in the rankings, she gained direct entry into her first Grand Slam main draw at Wimbledon (though without match-wins to show for it), but narrowly missed the cut at the US Open, losing a close battle in the first round of qualifying to Russian Anastasia Rodionova. But the emerging Chinese star persisted in trying her hand at other WTA Tour events, and worked her way to considerable success at Cincinnati in August, defeating some high-class opponents in Stéphanie Foretz, Jill Craybas and Alina Jidkova to reach her first WTA Tour quarterfinal, before losing to top-20 player Vera Zvonareva. A second quarterfinal performance followed at Guangzhou in September, after she virtually blew French star Marion Bartoli off the court for the loss of just one game in round two, only to be ousted in turn herself by countrywoman Li Ting. The year ended on a further high note for Peng, as she won her second $50k title and eighth overall career ITF singles title in November (Shenzhen 2), with impressive victories over her countrywomen Sun Tiantian and Zheng Jie.
