The church was built with a drive shed that also served as the church hall. In 1925, the church became the Johnstown United Church after a church union. In 1962, the church was moved closer to the river when Highway 2 was widened. At this time, the church also received new brickwork and a basement to serve as the new church hall.

The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to 1589. That medieval church was a stave church. In 1797, a new church (the present church) was built (probably) just to the south of the old church (legend says the old church was to the east of the new church). In August of 1797, the last services were held in the old church and then the record books state that on 9 October 1797 the new church was consecrated by Provost Krog from the nearby Veøy Church.

If a church member is found to have committed an offense by a membership council, he or she may have their name removed from church records, or their church membership may be otherwise restricted. Historically, church membership councils were at times referred to unofficially as church courts.

Free Reformed Church was formed in 1882 by merging the Free Evangelical Church of Czech and Free Reformed Church. In 2011 there was a 10,000 members of the church in the Czech Republic. Pinnerud was born in the parish of Furnes in Hedmark, Norway. Among his works were the pulpit and altarpiece of Østsinni Church (Østsinni kirke) in Nordre Land, from 1725 and interior in Nes Church in Ringsaker. Other works included church interiors at Dovre Church, Hof Church, Stor-Elvdal Church, Ytre Rendal Church, Fluberg Church and Nordsinni Church. One of his cabinets is located at the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History and a chest is on display at Maihaugen.
The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1327, but the church was not new at that time. That church was likely a stave church and it stood until around 1620-1625 when a new church was built adjacent to it. When the new timber-framed church was completed, the old church was torn down. In 1838, the church was once again torn down and replaced by a small timber-framed long church.

Other churches include Garrison Chapel Baptist Church. The Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, originally a slave chapel known as St. Andrews on the Coxe Plantation, was moved to Tryon in 1955. The ELCA is in full communion with the Episcopal Church, the Moravian Church in America, the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Reformed Church in America, the United Church of Christ, and the United Methodist Church. The ELCIC is in full communion with the Anglican Church of Canada. The International Lutheran Council includes the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS), the Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC), the American Association of Lutheran Churches (AALC), and the Lutheran Ministerium and Synod – USA (LMS).

A monument commemorating Alexander Duff (1806–1878), the first Church of Scotland missionary to India, is situated in the church grounds. A church hall was constructed in 1910. In 1929, when the majority of United Free Church of Scotland congregations rejoined the Church of Scotland, the Pitlochry United Free Church (which had been consecrated in 1863 as a Free Church and was from 1900 a United Free Church) became known as the East Church and the building currently in use became the West Church. The West Church, because of its prominent position overlooking the village, became affectionately known as "Mount Zion".

Caterham Community Church, Dormansland Baptist Church, Godstone Baptist Church, King's Church at Oxted, Oakhall Church and Whyteleafe United Free Church maintain links with the Evangelical Alliance. Caterham Community Church is also part of the 33-church South-East Area of the Congregational Federation, an association of 294 independent Congregational churches in Great Britain. The federation came into existence in 1972 when the Congregational Church in England and Wales merged with several other denominations to form the United Reformed Church. Certain congregations wanted to remain independent of this, and instead joined the Congregational Federation.
Watoto's main church is dubbed Watoto Church Downtown and has expanded over the years across the city with Watoto Church Kisaasi, Bweyogerere, Lubowa, Kyengera, Kansanga, Bugolobi and Entebbe. St. George Church, Thalayolaparambu is an important Catholic church in Kerala. This church is situated beside the Kottayam – Ernakulam road at Pallikavala junction, Thalayolaparambu. The congregation uses the former Lasswade United Presbyterian Church of Scotland (later United Free Church of Scotland) building, which became known as Lasswade Strathesk Church in 1929, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church. In 1956 the Old Parish Church (subsequently demolished) and Strathesk Church united, following the discovery of a serious structural fault with the Old Parish Church building in the late 1940s.
In 1925, the church became known as St. John's United Church after entering into a church union. This church is still in use. Some members of the Wesleyan-Methodist church became the Holiness Movement Church around 1900, and a new frame church was built in 1910 for the congregation. In 1956, a granite block building was built at the corner of Gill Street and Shanly Road to replace the frame church.

Altofts Methodist Church, opened in 1990, was built when the three Methodist congregations from Lower Altofts, Lock Lane and Upper Altofts amalgamated. The church is located on Church Road. Originally a rural white church, from 1849 until the Civil War it was a biracial church; since then, the church has moved and has become an African-American church. The old church site now has only a graveyard, the Antioch Cemetery.
Within the Church of England, the village is part of the United Benefice of Tolleshunt Knights with Tiptree and Great Braxted. The parish church is Saint Luke's, located on Church Road, next to St Lukes CofE Primary School. The church celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2006. Church of the Covenant is a Presbyterian Church located in Washington, Pennsylvania. The church nevertheless proved too small, so a second church was opened in a disused bell foundry on Prinsengracht canal in 1716. In 1929, when the United Free Church of Scotland united with the Church of Scotland, the church was renamed Camphill Queen's Park Church. In 1983, the Presbytery of Glasgow formed a Basis of Association, an agreement between Strathbungo Queen's Park and Camphill Queen’s Park, that upon the retirement or resignation of either church minister, the Strathbungo Queen’s Park building would close and the congregation would unite with the Camphill parish and use the Camphill building as the parish church.

The Manor Church Centre was a combined church and church hall on Seabank Road, Egremont, Merseyside, England. It was built in 1907–08 as Egremont Presbyterian Church, later became Egremont United Reformed Church, and in 1994 joined with a local Methodist church to become the Manor Church Centre. The church was designed by Briggs, Wolstenholme and Thornley, is constructed in sandstone, and is in a mixture of Arts and Crafts and Gothic Revival styles. The church is notable for the stained glass in its windows.
The name was once more changed when the United Free Church of Scotland merged into the Church of Scotland, becoming Kelvinside Parish Church in 1929. Between 1929 and 1978, the church served as a Parish church of the Church of Scotland. By the late 1970s, the congregation had dwindled and in 1978, it was decided to merge Kelvinside Parish Church with Hillhead Parish Church, and retaining the use of the latter building for worship. Consequently, the former Kelvinside Parish Church became redundant and derelict.
Pulteneytown Central Church Pulteneytown Central Church was founded in 1806 in the Pulteneytown area of Wick in Caithness in the far north of Scotland. As years went by, it was renamed Pulteneytown Free Church. It then became a United Free Church in 1900 and became a Church of Scotland from 1929 known as Wick Central Church until its closure in 1990 upon union with Pulteneytown and Thrumster Parish Church. Wick Central Church united with the Wick West Church (now demolished) in Francis Street in 1950.
