Frances McDormand's win at the Golden Globes makes this a perfect time to revisit her Oscar-winning performance as a sometimes-fierce and sometimes-chipper pregnant cop in this Coen brothers film, where a car salesman played by William H. Macy hires a pair of criminals (Steve Buscemi and Peter Sormare) to kidnap his wife so he can collect ransom from his father-in-law.

Shot using then nascent video technology and set to an eerily chipper Casio-fueled soundtrack provided by Karen Skladany, who also acted in the film, the 2875-minute "Possibly in Michigan" follows a masked cannibal named Arthur — played by, at different points, Condit and the actors Bill Blume and Stephen Vogel — as he stalks Jill Sands (playing a character named Sharon) and Skladany (as Sharon's friend Janice) through a nondescript Middle American shopping mall.
Of those, you can discount those under the cloud of PED suspicion (Bonds and Roger Clemens, and that unofficial embargo will soon lift and be forgotten, like a gentle fog); players still active (Adrian Beltre, Albert Pujols); those retired but not yet eligible for Hall of Fame voting (Jim Thome, Chipper Jones); a few pitchers with strong cases (Mike Mussina, Curt Schilling), and the tremendously controversial (Alex Rodriguez, who is also five years from eligibility, and Pete Rose, who will never get in).
In fact, it is the sensory details other than taste that struck my husband and me most during our summer visit: the sharp aromas of burning oak and vegetables cooking beneath ash, the incongruous but pleasant chorus of cicadas and prewar jazz serenading us to our courtyard table, the warm (but not overly chipper) service from two different servers, and a clear view of the space's statement piece: a hulking wire dome used for hanging carcasses and slow-cooking whole fish and meat.
Bounding around the stage of the Lyceum Theater, where the play opened on Monday, he jousts with not one or two but three different phones, nearly sweating through his gingham shirt as he gives voice to more than 40 characters, among them the harried but even-tempered central character, Sam; an imperious French maître d'; a patronizing bully of a chef; a chipper assistant to Gwyneth Paltrow; a socialite with a manner even more imposing than her name; and a lively menagerie of other New York types.
Small moments of Lynchian levity — like a cop's broken flashlight, or a nosy neighbor with a tiny dog — don't balance out eerie scenes like the one of Sarah Palmer sitting in the dark, silently staring as two leopards tear out a wildebeest's guts on TV. Tasha: I agree that this doesn't feel like early Twin Peaks, with a chipper Cooper leading local law enforcement through a bottle-smashing experiment to determine which clues in an investigation are important or chattering away to Diane on his tape recorder or offering explosively enthusiastic praise for pie, coffee, syrup, trees, and mountain air.
