Catechumen is a Roman-themed first-person shooter video game developed by N'Lightning Software Development. Set in ancient Rome, during the days of the early Christian church, the game follows a young Christian student as he delves deep into a labyrinth of Roman catacombs in order to rescue his mentor and brethren from Satan and his demons. Catechumen was released for Microsoft Windows in September 2000, to mixed reception. Catechumen is known for being one of the most expensive Christian video games made.

Catechumen is set in the year A.D. 171 during the reign of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, a persecutor of Christians. During this period, new Christian converts were guided by a mentor for at least a year in which the new converts were referred to as Catechumen. The game's opening cutscene reveals that the player's mentor and fellow brethren have been captured by demon-possessed Roman soldiers and locked in the deepest Roman catacombs. Being a Catechumen, it is the player's job to delve into the Roman catacombs to free them.

The oil that is used to anoint the catechumens before baptism is simple olive oil which is blessed by the priest immediately before he pours it into the baptismal font. Then, using his fingers, he takes some of the blessed oil floating on the surface of the baptismal water and anoints the catechumen on the forehead, breast, shoulders, ears, hands, and feet. He then immediately baptizes the catechumen with threefold immersion in the name of the Trinity. Anointing of the sick is called the "Sacred Mystery of Unction".

Solomon's Scepter is a late-game weapon that lobs large balls of explosive energy that deal splash damage, similar to the Rocket Launcher in Quake. Swords can be found laying on the ground throughout levels which can be picked up to increase the player's "ammunition" for that particular type of sword. Rather than having a life meter, Catechumen has a "faith" meter that depletes when taking damage from enemies. Players can replenish their faith meter by picking up scrolls strewn throughout levels with bible verses written on them.

The earliest proponents of justification by faith without works were identified by Augustine of Hippo in his work Enchiridion in 422 AD. According to Augustine, these persons were in good standing with the church but they practiced baptism immediately if someone believed in Christ, without first entering prolonged education in the Christian faith and morals as a catechumen. A member of a poor Muslim family, Ouchikh converted to Catholicism during the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, after being touched by the faith of the participants in World Youth Day in 1997. Reginald Yzendoorn, author of History of the Catholic Mission in the Hawaiian Islands, later wrote that Kaʻauwai was a judge and Calvinist deacon who related the burning of the Roman Catholic chapel of Wailuku in 1843 to his mother-in-law Marie Leahi, an early Catholic female catechumen. In the early Christian church, this same concept was used to describe role of the bishop, who was responsible for seeing to it that the catechumens were properly prepared for baptism. Mystagogical homilies, or homilies that dealt with the Church's sacraments, were given to those in the last stages of preparation for full Church membership. According to a marginal notation to the Conversion that has by now been incorporated into its main text, Pribina's allodial lands were situated in Nitrava ultra Danuvium where Archbishop Adalram of Salzburg (821-836) consecrated a church, Since Nitrava has been identified, although not unanimously, with modern Nitra in Slovakia, Pribina is considered to have ruled the large early medieval fortress excavated at that town. The consecration of the church in Nitrava took place around 827, thus it was the first church in all Eastern Europe whose existence is documented in writing.
