Onslow threatens his sister-in-law's social prestige with his scruffy clothes and common, coarse ways. Onslow is proudly "workshy, bone idle and out of condition", and rarely gets up before lunch or dinner time.

Born into a dysfunctional Burnley family, Paul Abbott is the seventh of eight children. When he was nine his mother left home to pursue a relationship with another man (with a child around Abbott's own age); his father, who Abbott describes as having been "bone idle", departed two years later. His mother had supported the family from three jobs. Abbott and his siblings were in the care of their pregnant seventeen-year-old sister.

In June 2019 the Buccaneers lifted their first piece of silverware when they won the first annual Bone Idle Tournament held at Bradford Ice Arena. The tournament consisted of 6 teams (Bradford Ice Wolves, Leeds Gryphons, Coventry Centurions, Trafford Thunder, Sheffield Mavericks and Blackburn Buccaneers). All 6 teams played each other in a round-robin format with the top 2 teams playing for the trophy and the 3rd/4th teams playing in a 3rd place playoff. The Buccaneers won all but one of their round-robin games leaving them at the top of the leaderboard.

The Grimleys follows the ups and downs of the dysfunctional Grimley family in their struggles with everyday life. Gordon Grimley (James Bradshaw) is an intellectual but feeble schoolboy who has a crush on his teacher, Miss Geraldine Titley (Amanda Holden; Samantha Janus in the pilot). His younger brother Darren (Ryan Cartwright), who also narrates the storyline and sets the scene, is fond of Gordon and sympathetic to his unrequited love for Miss Titley, but is frustrated by his brother's fey personality and his nickname, "The School Spanner". Their father Baz (Nigel Planer) was a bone- idle British Leyland car worker, who injured his back on his first day at the Longbridge plant and went on strike on the second.
