The just-released Star Wars: Battlefront II has been making headlines for much of the past two weeks because of the way it locks online progression — which is to say, the guns and gadgets you unlock — behind random loot boxes that can be purchased using real money.
Today, that dislike is slightly more quantifiable thanks to a comment on Reddit from the account "EACommunityTeam", which sought to defend the company's decision to shield popular characters from being immediately available to users who purchase Battlefront II, which has its worldwide release later this week.
From classic titles like Knights of The Old Republic, kid-friendly games like Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, to the original 2005 release of Star Wars Battlefront II, there are plenty of games for fans of all ages to get the fix on the Force.
It's the nature of early previews like this to only give off a hint of a game's potential, so that shouldn't come as a particular shock — but it seems somewhat unique given the marketing message of Battlefront II. Not that it will matter all that much anyway.
Electronic Arts' E3 press conference today was light on announcements, but delivered a large chunk of multiplayer gameplay from its upcoming Star Wars title, Battlefront II. It will introduce a single-player storyline where its predecessor did not, but expect the game's multiplayer to expand as well.
Electronic Arts kicked off the year's biggest week in gaming news with a handful of announcements on new games, as well as footage from the highly anticipated Star Wars: Battlefront II. Though it ended with a strange, lengthy multiplayer match and an ad for a mobile game.

As in previous games, Battlefront II players earn guns and mods by playing, but now players earn credits towards the purchase of boxes after every match and have a chance to get scrap from loot boxes which they can use to buy specific cards and guns.
Clearly, Battlefront II is relying on players to have information that's in the upcoming movie, or perhaps its novelization, but as a standalone story it is incoherent to point of absurdity and so far the most embarrassing cog in the Star Wars machine as reborn under Disney.
The way Iden quickly moves past the psychological horror at the destruction of the Death Star proves to be more about how Battlefront II needs to move from one story beat to the next as fast as possible, without giving the characters motivations for their actions.
On the pure trade battlefront, I left China feeling that there's a decent chance a limited deal — rolling back some American tariffs in exchange for a resumption of certain Chinese purchases, particularly of agricultural products, from the United States — can be reached in the near term.
The "industry plans to further expand live services revenue appear to have run into some roadblocks with gamers sounding off against some recent titles, notably EA's "Star Wars Battlefront II" and Activision's "Destiny 2" (though the issues with the latter go beyond just MTX)," he wrote.
The upcoming game Star Wars Battlefront II and the recently released Middle-Earth: Shadow of War both feature loot box systems that offer players improvements on their weapons and abilities, meaning that loot boxes have a chance to give you something that gives you an advantage in the game.

Thus far the news is promising, but we still haven't spent any time with the game, seen gameplay footage, or gotten a sense of what the gameplay mechanics and vehicle handling will be like — all problems that revealed themselves pretty quickly once people started playing Battlefront in 2015.
The company started working on Oculus Rift support for its Frostbite Engine (whose latest version powers Battlefront, along with games like Mirrors Edge Catalyst and Battlefield 1) all the way back in 2013, and X-Wing VR Mission is the first VR experience that's confirmed as using Frostbite.

As a special forces team, Battlefront II's Inferno Squad is meant to help bring those fantasies to life, by offering a jack-of-all-trades group that lets players fulfill multiple roles, instead of the traditionally pigeonholed Stormtroopers that exist in the movies to only do one thing.
As for that narrative, it's to the credit of both Motive and writers Mitch Dyer and Walt Williams that I find myself thinking of Battlefront II not as a game with some narrative connective tissue, but as a Star Wars movie that I was actually able to play.
The console is printed with First Order and Rebel Alliance logos as well as the logo for the Inferno Squad (the special forces unit you command in Battlefront II.) The Dualshock4 controller included in the bundle also has a First Order and Rebel Alliance logo on each grip.

Things came to a head in 2017 when two of the year's most anticipated video game titles, Electronic Arts' "Star Wars Battlefront II" and Warner Brothers' "Middle-earth: Shadow of War," faced backlash from gamers due to the inclusion of micro transactions in exchange for so-called loot boxes.
Developer DICE lowered the amount of credits needed to purchase characters such as Darth Vader and EA froze in-game microtransactions entirely, but the damage was already done and Star Wars Battlefront II's loot box scheme gained so much attention, both lawmakers and the mainstream media took notice.
That's not the story this game decides to tell, but even when Battlefront II makes a not-so-shocking pivot to Iden realizing she's on the wrong side of the conflict, after the Empire exacts cruelty on her home planet, her journey of understanding could have been equally worthwhile.
Loot boxes have been prevalent for at least a decade, mostly in free games, but the Battlefront controversy was "the first real big punch in the gut," said Christopher Hansford, the political engagement director for Consumers for Digital Fairness, which wants randomized in-game transactions regulated as gambling.
There also appears to be a greater emphasis on space battle, something that was fun in the last installment, but never received much attention other than some DLC content and the VR expansion pack for the PlayStation VR. Star Wars: Battlefront II is expected to be released later this year.

At the end of the day, loot boxes are a moneymaking mechanism that rely upon a simple premise: The big-spending "whales" provide the bulk of the post-release income, while the rest of the player community — for Battlefront II, the folks that don't buy crystals — keeps the whales interested.
But today denizens of Democratic war rooms are more likely to have a computer science background than experience on a big Senate campaign, and the main battlefront after a big debate isn't Johnny Apple's front-page interpretation of the event but whether fringe disinformation penetrates the mainstream social media conversation.

And while iOS may not have titles like Battlefront 2 or Destiny 2, both of which have drawn fire from gamers for loot crate tactics over the past few months, Apple's policy would seem to include popular games like Hearthstone, with its randomized card packs that players can buy as in-game purchases.
The company's profitable business model is now at risk after angry gamers revolted over its aggressive in-game moneymaking strategy in "Star Wars Battlefront II." EA's stock is down 8.5 percent month to date through Tuesday compared with the S&P 2.83's 2 percent gain, wiping out $3.1 billion of shareholder value.
With the holiday season on its way, the games industry is pushing out a diverse lineup of titles, from new installments of long-running franchises like Activision's Call of Duty and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed to EA's long-awaited Star Wars Battlefront II. The original Star Wars: Battlefront II, which came out in 2005 (and was the sequel to a game that in turn set up a 2015 franchise reboot), was pure fan service, welded to a set of cleverly tuned game systems that borrowed liberally from some of the best multiplayer shooters out there circa 2005.
It's an old storytelling adage that everybody thinks they're the hero of their own story — even classic villains — and while Battlefront II appears to be exploring that idea in the most literal sense, it's a sentiment that has seemed to creep into much of the new Star Wars material that Lucasfilm has been generating.
Electronic Arts and Disney, which signed an exclusive deal to make Star Wars games in 2013, are already working on a Battlefront sequel and have intrusted two new AAA games with high profile talent: the developers of Titanfalland the developers of Dead Space, now led by Amy Hennig, who previously directed PlayStation's Uncharted series.

The letter, which was signed by the Center for Media Justice, the Open Technology Institute, Free Press, and dozens of other groups, increases the pressure on the Federal Communications Commission to address zero-rating, which has become the latest battlefront in the decade-long war between policymakers, industry giants, and consumer advocates over how best to ensure internet openness.
I haven't done enough reporting on Battlefront II to say who demanded loot boxes be so deeply embedded in the game, but decades of covering the industry suggests it's at pay grades far above the people making the game, a reliable tug-of-war between a game's design aspirations and the folks who sign the checks.
To make matters worse, Battlefront II's producer Paul Keslin told YouTuber Angry Joe that the team doesn't know the math behind how long it'd actually take to unlock everything for free (although Reddit user thesomeot referenced a couple links in his above post that attempt to work out the math to about 4528 hours or $2100 to unlock everything).
After four months of being in limbo on the issue, publisher EA has finally announced that it will remove paid loot boxes from Star Wars Battlefront II. In an official blog post, the publisher announced it would completely revise the progression system for the multiplayer shooter that caused so much controversy during its release in November.
Loot boxes are a common way to monetize in dozens of games, including Fortnite, League of Legends and EA's Star Wars Battlefront II. While Apex already offered loot boxes for cosmetics before, players took issue that the game didn't offer any other way to obtain most of these Iron Crown cosmetics, such as spending time completing missions.
The fact that Wilson — the president of a nation more than 3,000 miles removed from the closest battlefront, a nation directly involved in the war for less than a year at that point — presumed to dictate conditions for peace at all was remarkable, and it presaged the outsize role the United States would soon take on.
But things get murkier when real-money upgrades impact the way the game actually plays, especially for multiplayer experiences, as was the initial structure of Battlefront II. Many players saw the game's loot boxes — where you could spend real money for a randomized item that could directly impact multiplayer competition — as a way of encouraging spending cash on in-game success.

The Real Deal: Those who have seen The Last Jedi repeatedly know that there's a lot in there, but it took an official Lucasfilm video to reveal just how many Easter eggs were hidden in plain view during the movie, including references to the Star Wars: Battlefront videogames, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and the comics and novel spin-offs.
And one particular moment with Lando had me howling: But there are other issues undermining Battlefront II's ability to tell a convincing story, too, such as the random times the game will tell you to not "leave the mission area," even though the only thing I wanted to do was to walk down the stairs and see if a collectible was hiding.
Though criticisms over loot boxes has gained fiery momentum in recent months, buoyed by sloppy integration in games like Forza Motorsport 7 and Shadow of War, everything crystallized over the egregious nature of Star Wars Battlefront II, a game where the loot boxes seem to go well beyond merely providing an additional revenue stream, and negatively impacted the game itself.
Fledgling Jedi are no match for him, because obviously: And playing as Vader in Star Wars: Battlefront really gives you the feeling of how much of a beast he is on the field: But there's a marked difference between seeing his exploits in comic form, in an animated series, or a game, and watching actual human beings face a monster's murderous wrath on the big screen.
Belgium has been one of the earliest countries to investigate loot boxes, following the release and subsequent outcry of how EA had implemented the random reward system in Star Wars Battlefront II. While the commission did investigate that game alongside the others mentioned above, it found that with EA's recent changes to how the loot system works, it doesn't fall under the "games of chance" classification anymore.
