Estimates differ as to the breadth of the glacier where it is crossed, as owing to its movement and roughness no two caravans cross it in exactly the same way, but it is not less than a mile wide. In 1836 this glacier dammed the Chenab River, causing the formation of a large lake, which eventually broke loose and carried devastation down the valley.

Benjamin Morrell recorded in the 1830s that sails were "made in small pieces of about three feet square, sewed together. Just before 7:00am, in Sonning cutting, the train ran into soil that had slipped from the side of the cutting onto the track, covering it two or three feet deep. Descended from the tricorne, the black-coloured bicorne originally had a rather broad brim, with the front and the rear halves turned up and pinned together forming a semi-circular fan shape; there was usually a cockade in the national colours at the front. The Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms was an era of disunity in the time stretch between the end of the Tang dynasty and the establishment of the Song dynasty: during this period, the political, social, and population center of China moved increasingly toward the south, and during this process Kuizhou came to be more and more central in these regards. In August 1918 it was found on an examination of the steamer Comboyne that it would be necessary to replace or repair her keelson, and in order to do this it was incumbent to remove the whole top structure, including the bridge, funnel, and deck cabins. In the ordinary course this would have been done by piecemeal removal of the superstructure, and would have taken some weeks to remove and replace. At this time a Mr Waugh had just built the steam winches Hawk a 100-tonne floating sheerleg and it was decided to use this on its first big job. The super structure of the Comboyne was unbolted from the deck, large balks of timber were placed athwart for the purpose of raising, and others fore and aft as supports, and the whole of this part of the vessel, weighing 35 tons, was lifted bodily off the boat, and placed on a lighter.

Thomas Brown, (1738March 8, 1797) was an American colonial era husbandman, businessman, and land speculator. Along with his brother Basil, he acquired the bulk of the (Brownsville) lands towards the end of the American Revolution from Thomas Cresap Colonel Cresap had worked with Delaware Chief Nemacolin and a small crew (under contract with the Ohio Company in 1848-1853) trying to widen and improve what became Braddock's military road down to the ford at 'Redstone Old Fort' precisely to the lands Cresap sold to the Browns. When Braddock's Road reached (today's) Uniontown, it diverged following a different set of Amerindian trails to head northwest while Nemacolin Trail (became Burd's Road to Brownsville) headed to the ford at Brownsville. The Ohio Company had settled a large grant on Cresap, who'd also founded Oldtown, Maryland athwart the Nemacolin Trail about 1741. Whether he was independent fleeing the situation along the Conejohela Valley, or had been dispatched by Lord Baltimore is mootfrom 1841 onward he had a hand in developing the route over the mountains and the Ohio River Basin.

When U.S. X Corps commander General Edward Almond received a request from Eighth Army commander General Matthew Ridgway on 30 January for a X Corps - Republic of Korea Army (ROK) III Corps operation similar to Operation Thunderbolt, he was in the process of extending X Corps’ diversionary effort ordered earlier by Ridgway. Having achieved the Yoju-Wonju-Yongwol line against little opposition, Almond was planning a strong combat reconnaissance above this line. Searching that deep at Corps' center and right could apply pressure on the Korean People's Army (KPA) V and II Corps concentrated above Hoengsong and Pyongchang. At the same time, the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division, due to move north along the Corps' left boundary as far as Chip’yong-ni, east of Yangp’yong, could protect the right flank of IX Corps as Operation Thunderbolt continued. In the recent course of protecting IX Corps' right, a joint motorized patrol from the 2nd and 24th Infantry Divisions on 29 January had moved north out of the Yoju area on the east side of the Han River to a pair of railroad tunnels and a connecting bridge standing east and west athwart a narrow valley south of Chip’yong-ni.
