More than 7,800 FSIS inspection program personnel are assigned to about 6,200 Federal slaughter, food processing, and import establishments in the United States. They verify the processing of tens of billions of pounds of meat and poultry, and billions of pounds of egg products. At slaughter establishments, inspectors perform antemortem inspections to prevent slaughter of diseased animals. Then, postmortem examinations are performed to identify diseased carcasses not evident antemortem.

Certain poisons, such as potassium cyanide or strychnine, may also delay putrefaction, while chronic alcoholism will speed it. External injuries: Antemortem or postmortem injuries can speed putrefaction as injured areas can be more susceptible to invasion by bacteria.

Pacheco’s disease can be diagnosed both antemortem and post-mortem. By diagnosing an infected bird antemortem, a DNA probe runs serologically and detects the virus within the bird’s internal system, mainly to find asymptomatic carriers. This theoretically tests for all known herpesvirus serotypes that infect the birds and involves taking samples from the bird’s oral cavity or cloaca, where the virus can be consistently detected in most parrots. However, readings can often present a misleading indication that there is no presence of Pacheco’s disease as a result of samples being collected at the time the bird is not shedding the herpesvirus.

Indonesian police have been coordinating with Interpol and the Foreign Office to find out more about this event. They also collected antemortem data required to identify the victims. Indonesian foreign minister, Retno Marsudi said that the government will do the best to fulfil their citizen rights.

The Santiago Catholic Church's antemortem records were matched with autopsy records to identify and return the bodily remains to living relatives. , 126 bodies were found, of which 96 were identified by the Medical Legal Institute in 1998. Authorities reported that all bodies in Patio 29 had been exhumed by 2006, though some families of the victims disagreed.

Caries were found to be significantly lower in women, with an increase in caries corresponding to an increase in age. The gruesomely mutilated body of a girl is found in a manhole by Spanish police. The parents of missing six-year-old Angela Gifford, local editor Claudia and her British husband Marc, are duly notified. The identification is only deemed possible thanks to a bracelet and a four-centimeter leg length discrepancy. All other identifying traits are missing and the body shows needle insertions and acid burns, apparently inflicted antemortem.

Available tests, as of July 2019, at the CFIA were not sensitive enough to detect the prion in specimens from animals younger than a year old. Strategies are being developed to allow for the quantification of prion burden in a tissue, body fluid, or environmental sample. As of 2015, no commercially feasible diagnostic tests could be used on live animals. As early as 2001 an antemortem test was deemed urgent.

Limitations to the bite mark studies include differences in properties of pigskin compared to human skin and the technique of using simulated pressures to create bite marks. Although similar histologically, pigskin and human skin behave in dynamically different ways due to differences in elasticity. Furthermore, postmortem bites on nonhuman skin, such as those used in the experiments of Martin-de-las Heras et al., display different patterns to those seen in antemortem bite injuries.

Attrition was found to be moderate. Abscessing quantification is ambiguous at best as it does not adequately account for areas of antemortem tooth loss. Factors contributing to poor dental health among the Moatflied include: no evidence of dental hygiene; low fluoride content in local soils; high starch (maize) consumption that adheres to teeth. No analysis of other factors including ritual removal of teeth, use of teeth as a tool for activities such as hide work was noted.

Surprisingly however, these pathologies were not observed on the remains of the Moatfield individuals. The most likely explanation for this is the consumption of fish from Lake Ontario and local streams that were identified in the faunal collection of the site. The dental analysis for the Moatfield population focused on patterns of caries (cavities), abscessing, wear, and antemortem tooth loss. Dental analysis was divided into two study collections due to the disarticulated nature of the remains: maxillary specimens and mandibular specimens.

Continuous inspection (carcass-by-carcass inspection) is the USDA’s meat and poultry inspection system, called "continuous" because no animal destined for human food may be slaughtered or dressed unless an inspector is continuously present. The inspector examines each animal before slaughter (antemortem inspection) and the carcass and parts after slaughter (postmortem inspection). In processing plants (as opposed to slaughter plants), inspectors need not be present at all times, but instead visit at least once a day. Such inspection also is considered to be continuous.

On 29 September 2020, a 22-year-old Dalit college girl was gang-raped and assaulted in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh and she died on way to the hospital. As per her family, she was abducted on her way back home and raped by at least two men. Postmortem report suggests she was badly tortured even after rape. The postmortem report said there were at least ten antemortem injuries on her body eight contusion wounds on her cheek, chest, elbows, left thigh and two abrasions on her left leg and knee.

Dental radiograph Dental examination is a method of body identification that involves the comparison of antemortem and postmortem dental records, such as radiographs and photographs. The jaw is analysed to detect any peculiarities in the teeth or any diseases. In the scenario where skin prints are unable to assist in the process of identification, dental examination can be used. The Forensic Dentistry and Anthropology Center of the Dental Faculty of Piracicaba analysed radiographs and dental records of a "surgically implanted orthopedic plate" to successfully identify a burned body.

Presently, a commercial antibody test that can detect P. tenuis antemortem does not exist. Diagnosis in deer can be conducted by analyzing fecal pellets for larval P. tenuis, or post mortem necropsy to detect presence of adult P. tenuis in the brain cavity or second- and third-stage worms along the spinal cord. However, brainworm larvae are difficult to distinguish from other parasitic worm species that can also be found in fecal pellets, so detection of adult worms through necropsy is recommended. Diagnosis in moose is conducted with necropsy to detect worms in the brain or spinal cord.
