There were no fatalities, owing to the complete evacuation. While the island was deserted, the German filmmaker Werner Herzog traveled to the abandoned town of Basse-Terre to find a peasant who had refused to leave his home on the slopes of the volcano.

159 Queen City was all but forgotten, and not a significant part of written Adams County history, until Lake Binder was created as a water supply for nearby Corning. Euro is an abandoned town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, located between Laverton and Mount Margaret. The town is named after a species of kangaroo, the eastern wallaroo. The town was gazetted in 1902 and took the name of a nearby gold mine. The mine had been established by North Star Gold mines prior to 1900 with lots being surveyed in the townsite in 1900.

The company, Yerilla Station Limited, was registered in 1923 with capital of £20,000. In the mid-1890s gold was discovered in the area, and by 1898 a layout for businesses and residences was planned, initially called Woolgar. By 1904 the mining warden sought for the town to be declared. A town named Woolgar already existed in Queensland, so Yunndaga was chosen instead.

The German mayor of the town ordered to blow up the town hall tower and the tower of the Holy Cross church. On one of the town's squares, Germans hung six Polish workers, who were hiding in the abandoned town. It was severely damaged in the course of the Lower Silesian Offensive of the Red Army against the Wehrmacht in February 1945. In May 1945 Strzelin was handed over to the Polish administration.

Livermore, Pennsylvania is an abandoned town that was located on the Conemaugh River between Blairsville and Saltsburg in Derry Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The town was abandoned and partially razed in the early 1950s following authorization by the Flood Control Act of 1936 and Flood Control Act of 1938 for construction of the Conemaugh Dam and Lake to prevent flooding of Pittsburgh. Paynesville is an abandoned town in the Mid West region of Western Australia between the towns of Mount Magnet and Sandstone. Gold was discovered in 1898 in the immediate area by the prospectors Thomas Payne and Waldeck. The townsite was surveyed in 1898 and was initially known as Paynton and East Mount Magnet and also known as Fords after another prospector who had worked the area. A local board of Health was established in the town in 1898.

In the final months of World War II, Soviet troops marching towards Berlin from the east entered the town on 27 January 1945. In that course, about 500 people committed suicide. Following the war the abandoned town was eventually restored to Poland.

Mertondale is an abandoned town located between Leonora and Laverton in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. A prospector named Fred Merton discovered gold in the area in 1898 and the claim turned out to be an exceedingly rich find. Mount Margaret was an abandoned town located northeast of Perth and southwest of Laverton in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. The first European to visit the area was government surveyor John Forrest who passed through in 1869 while on an expedition in search of the lost explorer Ludwig Leichhardt. On 25 June he named a nearby hill Mount Margaret after Margaret Elvire Hamersley whom he later married in 1876. The local indigenous name for the hill is Kalgara.

Another prospector and field manager, Captain Henry Fey, established the Feysville mine in 1896 and by 1897 the local progress association began to campaign for the town to be declared.

Eulaminna is an abandoned town located between Leonora and Laverton along the Old Leonora Road in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. Lots were originally surveyed in 1900 to serve the nearby Murrin Murrin Copper Mine that was known as the Anaconda Copper Mine at the time. By 1903 there were 64 residential lots and a population of about 350. A police station was also established in 1903 and the town boasted two hotels, two stores a chemist and a newsagent.

Kunanalling is an abandoned town in Western Australia located between Coolgardie and Balgarri along the Coolgardie North Road in the Goldfields- Esperance region of Western Australia. In 1895 gold was discovered in the area by prospectors and it was initially known as 25 mile, its distance from Coolgardie. The goldfields warden recommended that a townsite be declared in the same area. The town was also called Connanalling but the spelling was changed by the Lands Department when the town was gazetted in 1896.

Austin is an abandoned town in the Murchison region of Western Australia. The town is located south of Cue on an island in Lake Austin and for this reason was also known as Lake Austin and The Island Lake Austin. The lake and the town are both named after surveyor Robert Austin, who was the first European to explore and chart the area. Austin initially named the lake the Great Inland Marsh but the name was later changed to Lake Austin.

Sawyerville, previously known as Sawyers Depot, is an unincorporated community in west-central Hale County, Alabama and is a part of the Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. It derives its name from the town’s first post master. The community is rural and came to flourish due to its proximity to the railroad that once traveled through it. The community covers the historic area of the county once called Hollow Square and includes the abandoned town site of Erie, the former county seat of Greene County.

Hawthorne Army Depot surrounds the small town of Hawthorne, Nevada, where most of its employees reside. Prior to the facility becoming contractor- operated, it was staffed primarily by civil service workers and military personnel, who were housed on government owned property neighboring Hawthorne, including the now-abandoned town of Babbitt and military housing known as Schweer Drive. The housing in Babbitt was made up of large buildings created to be duplexes. The system of trusses allowed all interior walls to be removed without compromising their structure.

Wallace, near the railhead (at that time) of the Kansas Pacific Railroad, which was the since-abandoned town of Sheridan in Logan County, Kansas. Klamelisaurus (meaning "Kelameili Mountains lizard") is a genus of herbivorous sauropod dinosaur from the Middle Jurassic Shishugou Formation of China. The type species is Klamelisaurus gobiensis, which was named by Zhao Xijin in 1993, based on a partial skeleton discovered in 1982 near the abandoned town of Jiangjunmiao. Zhao described Klamelisaurus as the only member of a new subfamily, Klamelisauridae, among the now-defunct primitive sauropod order Bothrosauropodoidea. Since Zhao's description, Klamelisaurus received limited attention from researchers until Andrew Moore and colleagues redescribed it in 2020.

The town boomed during the early 1900s as a result of gold being discovered in the area. One of the larger mines in the area, The Golden Spinifex, built a five head stamp mill in 1902-1903. A petition for the government to construct a state battery was presented to the minister for mines by the local MLA signed by 58 leaseholders, prospectors and miners from Duketon.

Kathleen is an abandoned town located between Leinster and Wiluna along the Goldfields Highway in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. Gold was discovered in the area in 1897 and it was originally referred to as Kathleen Valley by the locals since gold had been found in the valley area near the town. The townsite was eventually gazetted as in 1900, once the valley part of the name was dropped. A shop and butchers was opened in 1901 and by 1902 the town supported two hotels.

Kundana is an abandoned town in Western Australia located between Coolgardie and Bardoc in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. After 58 miners petitioned the government to have the townsite declared in 1896 the town was declared the following year. The area was initially known as Barkers Find after the prospector who first found gold in the area, and later was known as 21 mile. When the townsite was surveyed in 1896 the surveyor, he used the name White Flag that was also in common usage.

Yundamindera, also once known as The Granites, is an abandoned town located between Leonora and Laverton in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. Gold was discovered in the area in the late 1897 after gold at the nearby field of Pennyweight Point began to run out. Two prospectors, Wood and his nephew Deimal, found gold near the Granites and following an influx of prospectors and miners declaration of a townsite was deemed necessary by 1901. The townsite was gazetted later the same year.

Goongarrie is an abandoned town in Western Australia, located in the Goldfield region of Western Australia north of Kalgoorlie. The town site was originally known as 90 Mile, the distance of the settlement from Coolgardie. A group of gold miners named Pickersgill, Cahill, Frost and Bennett, discovered gold in the area in 1893, which was the first discovery since gold was struck in Coolgardie. The town was known as 90 Mile and The Roaring Gimlet initially; the latter name comes from the sound the south westerly wind makes as it roars through the gimlet trees.

Mount Morgans, often called Morgans, is an abandoned town in Western Australia located east of Perth situated along the Old Laverton Road in between Leonora and Laverton in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. Gold was discovered near the present town-site in 1896 by a team of prospectors, Lilley and his party. The lease was later taken over by Alfred Edward Morgans who developed the Westralia Morgans Mine. Severe drought and poor access to the settlement resulted in the closure of the hotel and the hospital. In 1951 the police post closed and the town was abandoned. Increased tourism and discovery of gas and oil reserves in the late 1960s led to the formation of Cooper Creek Hotel Motel Pty Ltd, which opened a hotel, a store and accommodation in the abandoned town. Cheapside's school was consolidated with the Cuero Independent School District in 1949 due to low enrollment, and by 1960, the only remaining business in Cheapside was a small grocery store with a post office. The Victoria Advocate wrote in 2012 that in Cheapside there are "a few buildings teetering on collapse that become less and less visible through the trees and weeds, which have started to reclaim the abandoned town".

The town site was named after a comet that could be seen at about the time gold was discovered in the area. By 1895 the town had a population of approximately 500, and by 1897 the townspeople were demanding a post-office. The postmaster general instructed postmasters at Menzies and Googarrie prepare daily mail bags for Comet Vale which were then distributed at one of the stores in town.

Buldania is an abandoned town north-east of Norseman in the Goldfields- Esperance region of Western Australia. The small townsite, located about north of the Eyre Highway, serviced a field which was discovered in June 1896 by Arthur Bell. Despite the high yield of ore which was obtained, progress was slow due to the difficult terrain of the Fraser Range (being primarily composed of hard quartz below the surface) combined with a lack of capital to develop the area. By the end of 1897 it had a population of 51, notably including only one female.

Every year, during the third weekend of July, this abandoned town witnesses a historical reconstitution known as "Bannack Days". For two days, Bannack State Park officials organize an event that attempts to revive the times when Bannack was a boom town, re-enacting the day-to-day lives of the miners who lived there during the gold rush. Kurrajong is an abandoned town located between Leonora and Leinster along the Old Agnew Road in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. Gold was discovered in the area in 1894 and one of the earliest mines was the Diorite King, which was also used as the town name. The area near the Diorite goldfield was deemed unsuitable for housing due to the uneven terrain, so the townsite was chosen on the flats approximately away. H.S. King surveyed lots in the town in 1897 and the town was gazetted in 1899.

Abbotts is an abandoned town in Western Australia located in the Murchison Goldfields region of Western Australia located north-west of Meekatharra on the MeekatharraMount Clere Road. The townsite was initially established in 1898 and gazetted in 1900; the town is named after a prospector named Vincent Vrauizan who had changed his name to Vincent Abbott in 1893. One of the earliest mines to open was the Black Iguana. In 1895 the Black Iguana and the Abbotts mine were both operating ten head stamp mills in the town for processing ore.

It is found between Mount Magnet and Leonora Named after a geographical feature situated about 21 km south of the town which was named by the explorer John Forrest while on expedition in the area in 1869. It is thought to be named after a lady friend of Forrest. Gold was later discovered in the area in the 1895 resulting in a gold rush and by 1896 the town boasted a population of 200.

Golden Ridge is an abandoned town in Western Australia located east of Perth just off the Mount Monger Road in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. The town was originally designated as a business area through the mining act and was known as Waterfall. The government gazetted the town-site in 1910 following a request by the local progress committee to make more land available for residential development. It was initially named Waterfall, but the Commonwealth Government disagreed with the choice of name as another town with the same name already existed in New South Wales.

The site is on a high hill just north of the junction of Clear Creek and the Black Fork of the Mohican River. Named after its first postmaster, John S. Cochran, the small mining camp also served as a stop on the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railway. The post office was established on January 3, 1905, and was discontinued on January 15, 1915. At its peak, the population was approximately 100, and housed a general store and a boardinghouse, among other establishments. Apart from a few building foundations in the town center, and the railroad tracks at the edge of the now-abandoned town site, Cochran's last (and most notable) remains are five largely intact beehive coke ovens across the Gila River at Butte, Arizona.

The Eagle Mine is an abandoned mine near the abandoned town of Gilman and about one mile south east of Minturn in the U.S. state of Colorado. The mining began in the 1880s, initially for gold and silver but predominately zinc during later stages of its operation. The mine closed in 1984 and became an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund site. After the closure of the mine and the abandonment of Gilman, a area, which included 8 million tons of mine waste, were designated a Superfund site by the EPA and placed on the National Priorities List in 1986.

From the late 1940s through 1971, Palmer Coking Coal Company mined both surface and underground coal in and around the town site of Franklin. This mining ended in late March 1971 when a coal car bridge across the Green River was blasted in a ceremony attended by many local dignitaries. In 1860, the towns of Concepcion and Magalang comprised a single town named San Bartolome (presently an abandoned town and a barangay of Concepcion), which was a military Commandancia of Pampanga under the Spanish regime. A catastrophic flood devastated the whole settlement of San Bartolome in 1863 and its residents were left with no other choice but to abandon the place. Divided as to where they were to resettle, some went north and others went south. The first group, headed by Don Pablo Luciano, the Governadorcillo, organized a new settlement on the slopes of Mt. Arayat further south and named the settlement after him.

Cast of the holotype skeleton Between 1981 and 1985, a field crew from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) conducted excavations in the Junggar Basin of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of China, as part of a research project titled "Evolution of the Junggar Basin and the Formation of Petroleum". The work was conducted in cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Xinjiang Office of Petroleum. In 1982, these excavations uncovered the skeleton of a sauropod dinosaur north of the now-abandoned town of Jiangjunmiao, located in the eastern Junggar Basin. The skeleton was excavated and collected in 1984 by the IVPP field team.

After learning that his current chaperones were trying to knock him out with tea laced with laudanum, Snicket escapes with Markson in a green roadster. They arrive at the mostly abandoned town of Stain'd-by-the-Sea, a once-great exporter of octopus ink that has fallen on hard times.

"We wanted to find a way to transform and improve the area we were living in, for ourselves but also for our kids." The project has brought a whole new breath of life to Favara, previously known mostly for its general decrepitude and for having one of Italy's highest unemployment rates. Several elderly local women, who had clung to their homes in the semi-abandoned town centre, now live amongst the exhibition spaces, happy to have company and to once again reside in a neighbourhood that is safe and alive. Meanwhile, a growing number of local youth have come to volunteer at the project.

British Columbia Highway 37A, which is known as the Stewart Highway and also as the Glacier Highway, is a 65 km (40 mi) long spur of Highway 37 west from Meziadin Junction to the border towns of Stewart and Hyder, Alaska, where it connects with Alaska's Salmon River Road. The Highway 37A designation was assigned in 1984. The Salmon River Road continues from the border as an unsigned highway in Alaska, and heads north-westerly through Hyder and the Tongass National Forest. It crosses the border again at the abandoned town site of Premier, British Columbia, where it continues on as Granduc Road to the Salmon Glacier summit viewpoint ending at the Granduc Mine.

In early 1954, Merton moved the business to a small store on S. 2nd Street that had been relocated from the abandoned town of Cinnabar, Montana a few miles north of Gardiner. By the early 1960s, Merton moved the business into a more permanent structure, its present location at 202 S. 2nd Street, next to the old store, sharing the building with the U.S. Forest Service offices in Gardiner. When the Merry Hill Centre first opened, a number of large retail chains decided to move their stores from surrounding towns into the new shopping centre. These included: Marks & Spencer, C&A; (C&A; closed in early-2001 and the store is now occupied by H&M;) and formerly Littlewoods, until they closed their branch. The Littlewoods chain went into administration in 2006, and the stores completely disappeared from UK high streets and shopping centres by 2007. These left a number of large empty premises behind, which in turn meant many shoppers abandoned town centres for the Merry Hill Centre, which led to a large downturn in trade for those shops remaining, affecting their viability.

Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador, Volume One, (p 346) In 1696 when Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville had raided most of the settlements in Conception Bay and Trinity Bay, the residents of Carbonear and surrounding towns took refuge on the Island. During the Battle of Carbonear the abandoned town was burned but, thanks partially to fortifications they had erected with their own funds, the earth works walls of which are still evident, the residents were successful in defending the island from capture. The second major attack came in 1705 led by Daniel d'Auger de Subercase. After failing an attack on St. John's, he moved on to destroy every town in Conception and Trinity Bays, with the exception of Carbonear Island.

Pinnacles Station is a pastoral lease that once operated as a cattle station and now operates as a sheep station in Western Australia. It is situated approximately south west of Leinster and north west of Leonora in the Goldfields-Esperance region. The station surrounds the now abandoned town of Lawlers; it shares boundaries with Leinster Downs Station to the north, as well as Dandarraga, Sturt Meadows and Ida Valley Stations to the south. Pinnacles was established in 1896 by Messrs Routledge, Morris and Willis. Droughts followed but in 1909 it experienced the best season since 1896, with wildflowers blooming across the grazing lands and 300 cattle being overlanded down from the Kimberley region.

Beria is an abandoned town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, located north of Laverton on the Laverton-Leonora Road. The Beria townsite was surveyed and gazetted in 1905. Later in 1936 a new townsite was gazetted immediately to the south to allow an increased buffer area with the Lancefield mine plant.Western Australian Government Gazette, file 3797/05, 21 December 1936, p.2073 The Indigenous Australian word for the area is Tinbeeringtharra but the name Beria, another Indigenous Australian word meaning large open field was suggested by the surveyor John Rowe as a more suitable alternative. Gold was discovered in the area just north of the later townsite by prospectors Lemon, Hungerford, Elmes and Clement in 1897.

Mabel Cañada was born in the Santutxu neighborhood of Bilbao in 1952. Daughter of Ángel, a Burgos glassmaker and Isabel, a Balmasedana who dropped out of nursing to care for her father, is the second of five sisters and two brothers. Mother of 4 people, active in groups such as the Conscientious Objection Movement (MOC), the feminist movement, and groups against large infrastructures such as nuclear power plants or the Itoiz reservoir in Navarra. She was one of the founders of the community of Lakabe (Navarra) in 1980, an abandoned town that was squatted and recovered, in which coexistence is based on self-management, self- sufficiency, self-consumption, mutual support, and assembly operation.

Free Frank McWorter (1777–September 7, 1854) was an American slave who bought his own freedom and in 1836 founded the town of New Philadelphia in Illinois; he was the first African American to found a town in the United States. The New Philadelphia Town Site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2009. In the late 20th century, a local history group recruited archaeologists to explore the long-abandoned town site. Teams from the University of Maryland, College Park, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and De Paul University have worked for years on research and excavations, collected data about residents from census and land records, and turned up thousands of artifacts.

Southern end of a lock at the abandoned town of Lapidum, Maryland Remnants of the canal can be seen at Susquehanna State Park in Harford County, Maryland, northwest of Havre de Grace as part of the Southern Terminal, Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Susquehanna Museum in Havre de Grace has restored the lock house and other infrastructure at the southern terminus of the canal. On the Pennsylvania side, Lock #12 has been preserved by PPL along Pennsylvania Route 372 at the south end of the Norman Wood Bridge across the Susquehanna River. A footpath along the river leading from Lock 12 <39.813674, -76.328744> passes under highway Route 372 to the ruins of Locks 13.

When his uncle was killed in battle, Amr vowed to avenge his death; even after Zenobia denied him this chance by committing suicide, he stabbed her corpse. After his uncle's death, Amr broke away from Tanukhid overlordship and established the independent Lakhmid dynasty. According to the 10th-century historian al-Tabari, Amr resettled the abandoned town of al-Hira, and ruled there for 118 years—although in another place al-Tabari gives Amr's entire lifespan as 120 years—before being succeeded by his son Imru al-Qays ibn Amr as client king on behalf of the Sassanid Persians. Most medieval Arab historians agree with this, and only al-Ya'qubi gives the length of his reign as a plausible 55 years.

Mario Romañach indicated to Wiener his desire to work on the project and, along with Town Planning Associates, was added to the list. Soon after the initial announcement, the idea of a competition was abandoned, Town Planning Associates was given the commission outright as well as to Mario Romañach and Gabriela Menéndez. Several people have noted that the future location of the palace on the undeveloped east side of the bay in conjunction with the construction of the new Havana Tunnel that would encourage the development of Havana toward the east, maintaining Habana Vieja as a vital center and discourage westward expansion. With the commission for the presidential palace secured, Sert and Romañach become the primary designers of the project, Félix Candelawas to be the structural engineer and Hideo Sasaki the landscape architect.

The film opens with Charge/John (Trost), Cutthroat/Ben (Till), The Wall/Charlie (Valmassy), and Shadow/Jill (Merkley), waking up in a seemingly abandoned town, all bearing strange injection marks on their wrists. They soon discover television sets through which their nemesis, Rickshaw, whom the group thought Charge had defeated some time ago, explains to them that he has staged a game all across town with innocents' lives at stake, and that he has also taken away their powers. To prove this, he executes a civilian near Cutthroat's location, then instructs the heroes to head to a meeting ground. Once there, the four have a brief personal reunion, in which the group realizes that Charge still retains some of his abilities, before Rickshaw interrupts them, giving them new orders.

Gudarra is an abandoned town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. It is situated between Kalgoorlie and Menzies off the Goldfields Highway. The present-day Paddington Gold Mine is located near the old townsite. Gold was initially discovered in the area in 1892, with the place first called the Sore Foot Rush, as a result of the limping prospectors who arrived on news of the discovery. The name of the town was later changed to Paddington and gazetted using that name on 4 February 1897.Western Australian Government Gazette, file 8340/96, 4 February 1897, p.234. Multiple options are available for visual ambience, including daytime, nighttime (in which the user can choose from a list of options for lighting), night vision, and others unique to the chosen map (including storm mode for Ghost Town and a vintage camera for Dark Mansion).

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, named after the now-abandoned town of Iditarod, commemorates the last great gold rush in America to the Iditarod gold fields and the critical role that dogs played in the settlement and development of Alaska. It is a common myth that the race commemorates the dogsled relay known as the 1925 "Serum Run" from Nenana to Nome. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race was first established by Joe Redington Sr. in the early 1973 to encourage the designation of the Iditarod Trail as a National Historic Trail, bring the dying tradition of dog sledding back to the villages of Alaska, and promote the sport of competitive dogsled racing. Today the race follows much of the primary route of the Iditarod National Historic Trail, with a segment alternating north or south, depending on the year.

Ending at the mouth of Cousins Inlet, which is the harbour for the abandoned town of Ocean Falls, the fjord's name changes to Fisher Channel down the west side of King Island. Below Fisher Channel's length the fjord merges with Burke Channel, which is a arm of the Dean/Fisher Channel on the east side of King Island, the name dzsddddďcvof the fjord changes to Fitz Hugh Sound, which is considerably wider than the upper part of the fjord at about in width and is itself about in length. Fitz Hugh Sound passes on the inside of Calvert Island and opens onto Queen Charlotte Sound just northwest of the opening of Queen Charlotte Strait. Opening onto Fitz Hugh Sound in its lower reaches near Queen Charlotte Sound is Rivers Inlet, home of the Wuikinuxv (Owekeeno) First Nations.

They then come to an interchange with US 11W/SR 1 (Lee Highway/Memphis to Bristol Highway), where SR 70 separates to become concurrent with US 11W/SR 1 to the northeast while SR 66 continues north as curvy and narrow secondary highway towards Sneedville. They then pass along the northern edge of downtown, as a 4-lane divided highway, before coming to an interchange with SR 347 (Main Street/Old US 11W), where SR 347 ends and SR 70 separates to take over that route and it goes north as a narrow and curvy 2-lane highway through both mountains and farmland before coming to an intersection with SR 94 (Pressmen's Home Road), which runs through the abandoned town of Pressmen's Home, before entering a long mountain pass over several mountains and ridges before crossing into Hancock County just north of the community of Edison.

Bulong is an abandoned town in Western Australia located east of Perth in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. In 1893 a group of prospectors, Hogan, Henry, Holmes, Kennedy and Turnbull, discovered gold on a lease they were granted called IOU.The name of the locality IOU can be found in books, and on early maps of the goldfields despite the established official name - see also Devitt, F. (1952) I.O.U. and Bulong. Journal and proceedings (Western Australian Historical Society : 1949) Vol. 4, pt. 4 (1952), p. 68-69 A surveyor named G. Hamilton was given instructions to design the town layout in 1894, which was to be named IOU. Hamilton suggested the name be changed to the Indigenous Australian name of a nearby spring called Bulong. The townsite was gazetted in 1895. On the back of gold mining the population of the town grew to 620 by 1900, and it boasted large number of businesses including several hotels, bakeries, accountants, butchers and stores.

What happened was contemplated by a whisperer, who confessed to Beta to recognize him but before he could continue speaking, this ended the man. Waiting for the girl to revive as a walker, Beta did not have time to take her with his group when Alden finished her off from a distance, and noting that she was at a disadvantage, he escaped in terror from her reach. In the episode "Look at the Flowers", after finding Alpha's zombified head embedded in a pike, Beta flatly refused to occupy the woman's rank within The Whisperers and punished one of his companions who proclaimed him their leader. While walking through an abandoned town in search of new walkers for his horde, Beta entered a bar where several pieces of music were found and while inspecting him he found several memories of his time as a singer; destroying all traces that made him face his past.

This area was the center of the "town of Smoke Hole" proper, site of an official post office for a time. From here a steep Forest Service road switchbacks 5.4 miles up to the former site of the North Fork Mountain Lookout Tower. Grant County Route 28/11 also proceeds from this intersection and traverses the northern half of the Canyon well above the river level for about where it exits the Canyon at WV Route 55/28. (NB: Both Grant County Route 28/11 and Pendleton County Route 2 are indicated on maps as "Smoke Hole Road". The former was previously called FR 74.) Live bluegrass music and dancing at Shreves Store From the Shreve's Store intersection, CR 2 continues north another two miles along the river (past Old Mines Cave Rocks, mile 4.1 and Old Mines Cave, mile 5.8) to the abandoned town of Ketterman (mile 6.3) — also site of an erstwhile post office — and then a final mile to Big Bend Campground (mile 7.3) where the motorable roadway ends.
