Start with a small combination

Try “The patient lighthouse borrowed a coat.” Choose one question to answer: who lends clothes to a lighthouse, why is it cold, or where could it go? Write three sentences around that question. Change words whenever they help your scene.

Start with instructions

An AI writing tool can respond to instructions about a setting, tone or character, and it can produce surreal combinations too. If you use one, compare several suggestions and revise the wording yourself. A plausible-sounding result is not proof of accuracy or originality.

Compare the approaches in a group

  1. Give everyone the same five-minute writing time.
  2. One group starts from a template-generated sentence. Another starts from a prompt they specify.
  3. Ask each writer to mark one detail they kept and one they changed.
  4. Discuss which starting point helped each person and why, without treating a preference as a universal ranking.

Your choices make the exercise
